His Private Fix

Yeah, that was my mum. Not the warmest of people at the best of times, and right now was as fucking far from best as I could imagine.

Another ping gave me the address, and I leaned forward to relay it to the cab driver. Give the army their due, they’d gotten me home as soon as the news came in. A series of local hops, and then a scheduled flight to Auckland, before another to Wellington, and now a cab ride the sixty-odd kilometres to the quiet village where Marnie lived. Had lived.

“I know that place,” said the driver. His name tag on the dashboard read Dave Faroh. “That’s where that author stayed, Cassandra something. You know. Those medical thrillers, the Doctor Monaghan ones. I heard they’re putting one of ‘em on the telly. Can’t wait.”

I tuned his voice out. Fuck, but I was tired. I hadn’t slept for close to thirty-six hours, but every time I closed my eyes I saw Marnie’s face, and I jerked awake again. I was operating on a combination of adrenaline and bad coffee, but I could sleep later. I had to get through the funeral first. And somehow, God help me, I had to be polite to her arsehole of a boyfriend.

That fuckwit rubbed me the wrong way. Always had. And because of him, I didn’t go see Marnie on my last trip home. Bile rose in my throat.

I’d never get the chance again.

  His Temporary Fix

One night is all it takes

I'm done with being there for broken men who only want me while they're in pain. Zack’s home from Afghanistan on compassionate leave, and he’s hurting. That should be my cue to head straight in the opposite direction, especially when he makes it clear our night together is only to take his mind off his sister’s funeral. But when this sexy soldier kisses me, I can’t think of anything else.

Falling in love would be a dumb idea, especially when he only sees me as a temporary fix.

The last thing I wanted was to come home to New Zealand.

The last thing I expected was to fall in love.

  Playlist

Music is interwoven so tightly into my writing that I can’t untangle the two. Either I’m listening to a playlist on my iPod, have music seeping from my laptop speakers, or there’s a song playing in my head – sometimes on auto-repeat.

If His Private Fix had a soundtrack, this would be the playlist:

Wait For Me – Kings of Leon

Road Trippin’ – Red Hot Chili Peppers

Immortality – Pearl Jam (this is Jonah’s favourite song, and became one of the tracks I listened to the most during the writing process)

  Adolescents – Incubus

  And We’ll Defy – I Am Giant

  Angel – Massive Attack

Burden In My Hand – Soundgarden

  Don’t Panic – Coldplay

  Drive – Incubus

Fell on Black Days – Soundgarden

From Can to Can’t – Sound City

Given To Fly – Pearl Jam

  Home Again – Shihad

Lightning Song – Queens of the Stone Age

Promise – Slash ft Chris Cornell

  Sunday Morning – Maroon 5

  Thank You – Chris Cornell

  Wash Away – Joe Purdy

  Alive – Pearl Jam

  About Sofia Grey

Romance author Sofia Grey spends her days managing projects in the corporate world and her nights hanging out with wolf shifters and alpha males. She devours pretty much anything in the fiction line, but she prefers her romances to be hot, and her heroes to have hidden depths. When writing, she enjoys peeling back the layers to expose her characters’ flaws and always makes them work hard for their happy endings.
