  “Liam…”

  “Yeah…”

  “Turn around.”

I slowly turned and saw her standing there in the same set of lingerie as the photo. Seeing her this close, her bare flesh on display just a few feet away… I probably looked like an idiot with my half-open mouth and my blank stare.

She took a step toward me, green eyes locked on me like a predator stalking its prey.

“What do you think?” she asked, her voice soft.

“I…” I sighed a deep breath, trying to find my words. “I don’t know what to say. You really are a model.”

  “Anybody can be a model.”

“That’s true. But that doesn’t mean they’re good at it.”

I shifted my eyes down her body. Her armor. Her uniform. They both did a good job of hiding the figure underneath. Her breasts were large enough they made her waist even slimmer in comparison. Her stomach was flat with the faintest lines of muscles on it. Her slender figure led down to an ass and hips that had just the right amount of curves. I wasn’t sure if it was the stockings that made her legs seem long and shapely.

She took another step toward me and moved her hands behind her back. I listened to the sound of her bra unclasping. I wouldn’t believe it until it happened. But she didn’t tease me. Her arms dropped at her sides and her top fell to the floor, revealing a pair of breasts that made me swallow to clear my throat.

“Everybody always wonders about me. They wanna know exactly what I am. But I don’t answer. I like to keep it a mystery. But for you… 34-22-33. C-cup.”

“That… looks about right.” I reached my hand up and cupped one of her breasts. She sighed softly and kept her eyes locked on me. “Feels about right, too.” I squeezed her gently, trying to grip her all even though she was more than a handful.

She moved close and wrapped her hands around my neck. I leaned in for a kiss, again noticing the freckles on her high cheekbones. The deep green eyes were even more distracting up close.

“Anybody ever tell you, you look like Olivia Wilde? I mean, if she was half-Japanese and a redhead.”

She giggled, her breath against my lips. Even her gleaming white smile was distracting. “Never got that before but I’m not against it. Is that what you’re into, Liam?”

I inhaled and the sweet scent of her perfume flooded my nostrils. She reached down between my legs and grabbed my length through my boxers. I was so swollen it didn’t take her long to find it.

  “Yeah… I’d say that’s what you’re into,” she whispered.

She stroked me as I put my lips to hers. Our messy kiss bounced off the walls of my room. She moaned as I pressed my body against her, squeezing her breasts as she continued pumping me. She tugged my boxers down enough to free me. I was already enjoying myself but the soft flesh of her palm against me was that much better. My knees buckled as I tried not to explode right then and there.

A sudden hand on my chest shoved me back and made me stumble on the edge of the bed. She walked up to me and fell to her knees before me.

I stared at my door and she giggled.

“Don’t worry,” she said. “Quentin won’t be back for a long time.”

  “How do you know that?”

“Who do you think told him to leave?” She gave me a wink as she stuck her tongue out.

Nina didn’t give me a chance to protest. Hell, I wouldn’t have even if I could. When a beautiful redhead was on her knees with her tongue out, all you could do was let her take control.

The sight of Nina wrapping her lips around me made it hard for me to keep my eyes open. Red hair gently swaying with her bobbing head. Tongue running along the underside of my full length and making me shudder. The soft sound of her slurping. Green eyes giving me a focused stare to make sure I was enjoying it.

“I never thought… I never thought this would happen…” I put a hand on her shoulder to brace myself.

She leaned up and kissed me, wrapping her hand around my spit-covered shaft. “You never thought what would happen? Nina Higashi going down on you?”

“The Nina Higashi… going down on me…” Just saying the words was enough to make me even harder.

“I’m about to do even more than that.”

She stood up straight and turned around. I watched as she bent over, tugging her lacy panties down her legs. I stared between her cheeks and watched her reveal herself. A tight pink slit leaked a drop of anticipation. My heart beat so hard in my chest I thought it was gonna jump out.

Nina turned back around and I saw all of her. Outside of the stockings and garter, there was nothing for her to hide. I stared between her legs at the trimmed line of red hair trailing down her mound.

“See something you like?” she said with a smirk.

  “I see a lot I like.”

  “Me, too.”

She moved back to me and pulled my shirt up over my head. I kicked my boxers off my ankles as she straddled me. My hands moved to the small of her back. She looked down at me, hands wrapped around my neck.

Ever since I met her, she was so strong. I’d seen her take down Shadows without backing down. I’d seen her wield blades and viciously fight against all odds. A relentless, violent warrior on the battlefield.

But holding her in my arms now… She was so frail… soft… delicate. Her waist was so slim and her body was so tight, I didn’t have trouble keeping my grip despite how much she was beginning to sweat.

Her muscles tensed as she moved closer, grinding on top of me. The anticipation sent another rush of adrenaline surging through me.

“This is nice,” she whispered, a smirk on her lips.

  “Yeah, it is.”

“But we’ve been through a lot. I figure we both deserve this.”

  “I won’t argue with that.”

She giggled and leaned close to me. Her breath was warm against my cheek as she whispered into my ear. “Let’s just do it, Liam.”

The heat emanating from her made my shaft twitch. Thankfully, she didn’t waste another second. She lowered herself down on me with one swift movement. I gasped as her warmth tightened around my length. She whimpered softly, gripping the back of my neck tight in her hands.

My instincts took over. My grip firmed on her waist. My hips shifted. I slammed my body into hers.

Nina rode me, matching my rhythm. My hilt smacked hard against her folds. Our bodies clapped together in rhythm with the mattress squeaking underneath us.

  “That’s it… Just like that…”

She leaned back. One hand still around my neck, her other hand brushed her red hair back over her head.

Her back arched. Her breasts were large enough to heave with every thrust I gave her. Sweat continued dripping all over her pale skin. Green eyes flickered in a combination of agony and desire. Red hair flailed in the rhythm she rode me. Her cheekbones. Her nose. Even the way her lips twisted. Every damn thing about her had never been as gorgeous as this moment. A beautiful redhead was riding me, giggling as the pleasure overtook her. A Strider. A model. My squadmate. But right now, she was just a woman who wanted me just as bad as I wanted her.

She moved back close to me, whispering into my ear. “I’m close…”

“Me… too…” I struggled to get the words out.

  “Together…”

  “Together… Nina…”

  “Liam…”

Our breath was short. Our sweaty bodies rubbed against each other. We moved faster, pushing one another closer to the edge.

I drove myself into her like a piston. My hips moved like a blur. I moved so fast I lifted myself off the bed completely. She wrapped her arms and legs around me, squeezing me tight before suddenly seizing.

“Ahh…” a soft whimper came out of her as she started to convulse.

I kept my arms around her as I lost myself. My knees buckled hard as I fell over the edge. My length throbbed inside of her. Thick ropes of my seed filled her up, splashing against her slick walls. I held onto her for as long as
I could to make sure she enjoyed the feeling of my pulsing as much as I did.

Every inch of my body shook until I was completely drained. I fell back onto my bed on top of her. She didn’t seem to mind my weight pressing down on her, giggling as she tried to catch her breath. Even just the feeling of her slim body against me was as enjoyable as taking her.

I eventually managed to work up the strength to roll over. My eyes closed and face pointed at the ceiling, I was content as could be.

Nina curled up next to me, resting her head on my chest. Her feminine scent made me sigh one more breath.

“Not like a little squad-strengthening exercise after a successful mission,” she said.

“If this is for the squad, we can’t get back on campus soon enough.”

  46: All Hands on Deck

  One week later…

  “Woooooooooooo!”

The loud shout was followed by a giant splash that sent water flying out of the pool. I didn’t have to bother looking to know it was Elliot. His blond head popped up over the surface of the water.

  “C’mon in, everybody! Water’s perfect!”

The cadets all looked at one another before a few of them decided to join him. Seeing everybody enjoying themselves was enough to make me as content as ever.

“This is great, isn’t it?” Quentin said. “Sun is shining. Weather’s warm. Pool is cool. Perfect time for a swim, ain’t it?”

“Be honest,” I said. “You only invited the cadets to our apartment pool because you wanted to enjoy the view.”

He looked over at a couple of female cadets in their bikinis. “Hey! Our recruitment wave got whittled down to twelve people. We share a special bond here. We were the first ones to defeat a Herald on campus. If that’s not a reason to celebrate, I don’t know what is. Besides… Don’t act like you’re not staring, too, Liam.”

“I just need someone to point the finger at when they start to suspect something is up.”

“What’s a Vanguard for, eh?” He nudged me with an elbow and got a laugh out of me.

Paige walked up and greeted me with a smile. She was a lot more petite out of her armor. Her frame was small but her muscles were toned from her toned legs and arms to her flat stomach. She wore a small black bikini that was a sharp contrast to her pale skin. The bun her dark hair was in managed to be as neat as it always was.

“Thanks for inviting me,” she said.

“Why wouldn’t I?” I said with a smile. “We fought together, right?”

“Sure… But we’re not on campus anymore. We don’t have any obligations to the LOD at the moment. This was supposed to be our vacation.”

“We’ll be heading back soon anyway. I’m the closest one to the District. I figure we might as well enjoy ourselves together before we have to strap back in. What have you been up to?”

“Nothing wild. I’ve been putting some new art projects together but I’m really just focused on getting back on campus. I’m looking forward to seeing how I can improve as a Cavalier. Now that we know who we’re dealing with, I’m really excited about it.”

“I think everybody who’s still here is excited,” Quentin said. “I’ve got a feeling things will be a lot different when we get back. Doesn’t matter now though. Whatever’s waiting for us, we’ll be ready for it.”

“From what I heard, it’ll be at least another week until we’re recalled. I was thinking I might hang around Cutler Valley while I’m waiting.”

“The more the merrier,” I said.

  “Thanks for inviting everybody, Liam.”

Paige gave me a demure smile then nodded before turning around to talk with the rest of her squadmates. Quentin turned his head sideways as he examined her.

“She’s cute,” he said. “I wish some of the people in my class training sessions looked like that.”

“Is that what it’s all about? Choosing a class with all of the good-looking girls?”

“No… but it’s good motivation, ain’t it? Don’t tell me you haven’t looked at Paige and thought about it.”

He crossed his arms and gave me a detective stare silly enough to rival my brother’s. I chuckled at the sight and shook my head. Even though I could have brushed him off, I didn’t.

“Paige is cute,” I said. “I can admit that.”

“Damn straight. Nothing like a pale girl with dark hair to get you going.”

“But thinking about pretty girls should be the last thing on your mind during a training session.”

“I guess you’ve got a point… But what’d we do besides eat, sleep and train the entire time? You’ve gotta learn to live a little, Liam.” He slapped me on the arm.

“If inviting our fellow cadets to our apartment pool isn’t living, I don’t know what is.”

  “That’s the spirit.”

“What are you talking about?” Nina walked up to us.

The crimson red bikini she wore made it more apparent how fit her body was. Even though her waist, arms, and legs were slim, she had curves in all of the right places.

Quentin had no shame in looking over her pale body.

Nina crossed her arms and rolled her eyes in response. “You invited everybody here just to look at the girls in their bikinis. Was this your idea?” She shifted her cold stare toward me.

Before I had to say anything, Quentin put a hand up. “It was my idea. I mean, c’mon, Nina. Even you can agree a little camaraderie never hurts. And we’re gonna need every edge we can get if we’re gonna take on Pandora now that the Heralds have revealed themselves.”

Nina twisted her lips. Her nose wrinkled as she gave Quentin a side-eyed stare. The pouty look on her face and Quentin’s enthusiastic, open-mouthed grin made me chuckle even harder.

I put my hands on both of their shoulders. “Look,” I said. “We don’t know when we’re being recalled. But when we do, we know for sure it’s gonna get a lot harder. The Junctions. The Shadows. The training. Even dealing with some unknown threat Dr. Bonet happens to stumble upon. I think Quentin’s got the right idea.”

  “You’re damn right I do!”

“The sun’s out. The sky is clear. The breeze is blowing. We all fight together. Who says we can’t celebrate, too?”

Nina looked me up and down then smiled. “You’re right. A little camaraderie never hurt.”

“That’s what I’m talkin’ about!” Quentin slapped his hands together. “Now… It’s not a party without a little food. I say we get some pizza. We can’t get that robot stuff on the campus but hey, we can still find something satisfying. I’ll get on it now.”

Quentin walked away and left me alone with Nina.

She only looked at me for a second before raising an eyebrow. “What are you thinking?”

  “I’m not thinking anything.”

  “Yes, you are.”

  “How do you know?”

“Because I know you well enough, Liam.”

“You don’t know me as well as you think you do. Not everything is on file.”

  “True… But I know you.”

I laughed and put an arm around her shoulders.

“I hope you can keep your focus when we get back,” she said. “It’s gonna be a lot harder once we move up in rank.”

  “I know I’ll be fine.”

  “How do you know that?”

“Because we’ll be doing it together. The Great Defenders…”

She laughed softly and nodded. “The Great Defenders…”

We both looked out at the pool. Everybody was splashing in the water, chatting among themselves without a care in the world.

“It’s kinda strange to think about,” she said. “These are the people responsible for protecting the world. Just a bunch of young twenty-somethings.”

“It doesn’t matter how old they are or what they look like. We’re all Omegas.”

“The line between existence and extinction…” Nina sighed a deep breath. “They’ll be calling us back soon…”

  I kept m
y arm around her as I enjoyed the scene. Something stirred inside of me. I always had trouble placing my feelings but this… this was something different. Something I couldn’t remember feeling in a long time. Now I knew what pride felt like. And that was enough to make me smile.

“Whatever’s waiting for us, we’ll be ready.”
