  About the Author

Dmitry Bilik was born in 1986 in a small Russian town. A passionate reader since childhood, he loved nothing better than to create worlds of his own. He devoured classical sci fi and fantasy - so no wonder that by his early teens, he’d begun writing his own stories.

His path to authorhood, however, proved windier than he’d imagined. Dmitry graduated from college and went on to study at university. Then he got married. All those years, he treated writing as a hobby - as his own way to escape reality. Only ten years after he’d first put pen to paper, Dmitry started publishing his writing on the Internet, experimenting with a number of genres.

Today, Interworld Network is Dmitry’s most popular series which has become a bestseller overnight, combining the best of LitRPG and urban fantasy.

  * * *

[1] The history of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union: an obligatory subject in all Russian colleges and universities from 1938 to 1991.

[2] “Symposium” is a play on words: the Latin word “symposium”, which these days stands for a scientific conference, used to mean “a drunken party” in Roman days.

[3] These are names of Russian TV shows. Vremya (Time), Vesti (Tidings), and Novosti (News) are news programs; Comedy Club is an entertainment show.

[4] During shortages in the Soviet Union, furniture from Czechoslovakia was valued. Anyone who had any was considered rather well-off.

[5] When people reach military age in Russia, sometimes they illegally purchase a military card to avoid serving in the army.

[6] Alexei Leonov, a Soviet cosmonaut who completed the first spacewalk on March 18, 1965.

[7] Shawarma is a Middle Eastern dish that is popular in Russia. It contains pieces of chopped meat and vegetables rolled in lavash bread.

[8] Leave the Twilight! — a reference to the bestselling Night Watch urban fantasy series by Russian author Sergei Lukyanenko. This is a phrase uttered by the Night Watch members to challenge and expel the forces of the Dark from the city streets.

[9] FSB: Federal Security Service, the Russian counter-intelligence office

[10] Employment record book: in Russia, a small notebook the size of a passport used to keep record of the person’s professional activities throughout their life. All legal employers are under obligation to enter relevant records in their workers’ employment books, including any pay raises, promotions, professional achievements, incidents of professional misconduct, etc. It serves several purposes, like allowing their next employer to see their entire career at a glance or helping to calculate their pension once they retire. Currently, the Russian government is planning to abolish traditional employment books, creating a single electronic database instead.

[11] Gorokhovets (pronounced goh-roh-hoh-VETS): one of the oldest towns in Russia dating back to the 6th century A.D.

[12] In Russia, the low intellectual level and bad taste of most TV shows have led to a situation where many progressive Russians don’t watch TV at all. Many don’t even own a TV set, preferring to use the Internet instead.

[13] “Wanna do a three-way split?” — traditionally in Russia, three alcoholics would club together to buy a half-liter bottle of vodka (about 0.5 quart) which was considered enough to go round for three people. So it’s quite common for one or two drunkards to approach strangers looking for a third person willing to share both the expense and the drink.

[14] Sweetened condensed milk is very popular in Russia, making the base for a multitude of delicious desserts.

[15] STS: a Russian entertainment channel specializing in sitcoms.

[16] REN-TV is a Russian entertainment channel known for its many programs on conspiracy theories and UFOs.

[17] TNT is an entertainment channel specializing in comedy programs, usually of the slapstick variety.

[18] Channel One and Rossiya (Russia) broadcast many political and analysis programs.

[19] Two thousand Russian rubles is about $30

[20] In Greek mythology, King Acrisius was warned by the Oracle at Delphi that he would one day be killed by his own grandson. Acrisius then locked his daughter Danaë up in a bronze chamber for fear of the prophesy coming true. Still, Danaë got pregnant from Zeus and had a hero son called Perseus who, many valorous feats later, took part in sports games where he accidentally killed his grandfather by hitting him on the head with a badly-aimed discus, thus fulfilling the prophesy.

[21] Samy Naceri: French actor known for his performance in four of the Taxi films.

[22] Chelyabinsk (Russia): a major industrial center in the Ural Mountains suffering from pollution and heavy smog

[23] RPG: a Rocket Propelled Grenade
