Taking It Off for the Coyote

“You’re a member of this pack,” Sam told her firmly. “I’ll protect you just like any other. However, when or if you become a danger to us, your life is over.”

“Understand that I won’t go down without a fight,” she said evenly. “I’m done being anyone’s victim. I’m done hiding. There is so much I want to experience and I can’t do that if I go back to who I was.”

Sydney slipped her arm around Cambrie’s waist. “If you move against my mate, you make an enemy of me, Sam.”

“I know,” she said with a shrug. “I’d expect nothing less, Sydney.”

  “What about Jericho?”

“I’ve spoken to him and so has Mal. He’s surprised by the turn of events and wants nothing to do with me as an ally. He hasn’t broken his alliance with Mal yet, but he will because she won’t back him when he moves against me in an attempt to get to you.”

“He’s still set on that?” Sydney asked.

“Yes,” Sam replied. “The pack will be made aware of the problem between us and him. By the way, no physical evidence has shown up to support his claim. However, his “witness” is still singing the same old song.”

“And it’s still a lie,” Sydney said.

“Then, if he wants to fight this out, we’ll do it,” Sam said. “Let’s just hope the hearing changes his mind.”

“I can change it,” Cambrie told them quietly. She looked up at Sydney then and Sydney met her gaze. “But I won’t interfere.”

Sydney gave her a faint smile. “No. He might change his mind on his own.”

“Don’t rely on it,” Sam said. “Jericho’s never been too comfortable with a woman alpha, but he couldn’t run us out of town. His chance has passed, so I think he’ll try to get rid of me or Mal himself.”

  “Mistake,” Sydney muttered.

“A big one,” Sam agreed. “Excuse me, and don’t fuck on that desk.” She gave them a grin and left them alone.

Cambrie smirked and Sydney grunted. “She’s such an ass,” Cambrie said.

“But she’ll be a great alpha,” Sydney told her. “You could run now that you’re about to walk into another battle. Do you regret staying?”

“No.” Cambrie shook her head. “If I’d have left, I’d have lost you, and I don’t want to live without you, Syd.” She cupped her face. “I’d die to stay with you, and kill to keep you with me.” Her voice throbbed with emotion that echoed in her soul. She closed her hand around the necklace Sydney had given her. “This is my reminder that you’ve given yourself to me, to love and cherish.”

“I hoped you’d realize that,” Sydney said softly. “Cam, I do love you.””

She closed her arms around Syd and kissed her again feeling her heart flutter. Sydney wouldn’t be easy, but Cambrie knew Sydney cared about her not the destruction she could bring for her. That would give her comfort even through the fights and rough times.

“I love you too, Syd.” She rose on tip toe to kiss her lightly. Drawing back she was bathed by the light of love in Sydney’s eyes and it made her heart swell as it warmed her soul. “Let me show you where our home is going to be built.” She took Sydney’s hand and led her from the office.
