Kazimir had told his daughter who they were. Back in his youth, before his empire was even a fraction of what it was today, her father and his best friend ran a few small blocks of a large city. Together, they thought they would run the world.

Greed and anger, however, had different plans for them. They couldn’t agree on how to move forward, each of their ambitions getting in the way of the other’s until their friendship soured and turned to violence. Over the decades, they had done many hateful things to each other, but to kill one of Kazimir’s sons was crossing a line that could never be uncrossed.

Now, his friend Mikhail’s death was the only thing that could bring peace.

There was no peaceful quiet way they could get in. There was no where to hide in this tundra. Once they had gotten close enough to the outside guards, they attacked, knowing that everyone inside would come running to defend the camp. There was no other way around it.

Everywhere around them, white snow filled with blood.

Katya took a shot to the arm, and Kai lost his mind like no one had ever seen before. The normally gentle giant charged forward, a crazed look in his eyes. Growling so deeply it would shake demons, he clawed his way at the men nearest her, sending blood and chunks of flesh flying.

Anyone that was still standing outside fled.

Inside, only two men remained. Mikhail and a man clearly meant to guard him, who was trying to load a gun before they made their way over.

She knew the fight was over and that the men inside were not loading guns to try to fight them. No, they were trying to take the coward’s way out.

“Killing yourself will not be allowed.” Katya admonished, shaking a finger at them. “Kai, take their weapons, please.”

Kai, still not yet calmed down from her being wounded, obliged her swiftly.

“No matter what you do to me, I will not go back with you alive,” Mikhail replied in a dark voice.

“Oh no, you die today,” Katya agreed whole heartedly. “You just don’t die at your own hands. You die how I say you die.”

“Little women should not stick their noses into men’s business,” he snapped at her.

“You are no man,” her voice cut at him. “And I may be a little woman, that’s true, I carry a big fucking weapon with me.”

At the show of love, Kai calmed down slightly. This is exactly what he wanted to be for her. Lover, friend, trusted partner.

“Kill me then,” he taunted Kai, but Kai didn’t move. He would wait and play this her way.

Katya took out her side piece and shot the only other man in the room. Now Mikhail was truly alone with them.

“Take his arm,” Katya commanded. “The left one. I want his wedding ring as a trophy.”

Without hesitation, Kai ripped the man’s arm from his body the way someone would rip off a band aid.

Screams filled the night, but the sound didn’t bother her. She had sat in on more than one session of torture in her day.

“You’ll bleed to death slowly now,” Katya informed him coldly. “You’ll die alone as your men have abandoned you. They’ll join my family before your body is even stiff in the ground. You die loveless and utterly insignificant. You are nothing more than a small memory in the minds of greater men.”

She wasn’t even sure he had actually heard her insults. His screams were so loud they may have been wasted on him. But she knew what she said, and she was proud of her words.

As they turned to leave, Kai did something truly unexpected.

Dropping to one knee and holding the bloody, severed arm of her enemy, he pulled off the wedding ring and held it up to her.

“I know that you hate my clothes, and my jokes, and my loud mouth.” He smiled up at her. “But I also know that you love me. Each vampire has one destined mate, their soulmate, the one and only person they can share their lives with. Before you were even born, an oracle told me how I could find you, and I have been waiting for longer than you could imagine to find you, little Snakebite. Marry me, and let me protect you and slay your enemies for eternity?”

“Can I wear a black wedding dress?” She tapped her chin.

  “Negotiable.” He shrugged.

“Do you promise to never wear pink again?” she asked, hopeful.

“Okay, forget I asked.” He stood up and began walking away, hiding a laugh.

“No, no, wait! Okay, I’ll marry you if you rip his other arm off.” She chased after him. “Can we just have a little more gore at the proposal site to make it feel cozier for me?”

“Too late. I take the proposal back.” His strides were three times that of hers, and he was easily out pacing her. “Go marry one of his men who ran off, see if one of them can yank an arm off for you.”

“You can’t just take a marriage proposal back! Besides, I’m your fated mate, the one woman for you for all of eternity,” she mocked in a misty, spooky voice.

“That’s it.” He turned around, picked her up, flipped her over his shoulder, and began carrying her back like a sack of potatoes. “I never should have tried to be nice and propose properly. I should have known that wouldn’t work with you. Now, I’m just going to kidnap you and throw you in my underground bunker and have my way with you whenever I please.”

“Can we decorate the bunker with the skull of our enemies?” she perked up.

“You get nothing,” he smacked her butt while she was helpless to fight him off.

“Oh you’re in trouble now, buddy!” she hollered, wiggling hard despite his death grip. “I’ve got a massive boyfriend and he’s gonna kick your ass!”

  ~ One year later ~

Katya was more impressed by the Haka than anything else the two of them had planned for their wedding day. Their little patch of heaven on New Zealand was breathtaking, but something about the primal dance had spoken to her on a soul-deep level.

She stared at him while he and his men moved and screamed out in ways she had never experienced before. With her tight black wedding dress clinging to every curve of her body, she felt herself falling in love all over again.

They had melted down Mikhail’s wedding ring, added a massive pearl to the band instead of a diamond, and used it for her wedding ring. It was a symbol of the first time she had ever truly relied on another human being and a symbol of their first real step into life together.

From now on, she would never be alone, and no matter how strong the frost got, he would always be by her side to keep her warm.
