Meant to be Mine: Kincaid Sisters Book 1

Allyson glares at Evan and when I follow her gaze to him, Evan is staring at me. The woman sneers and takes a step closer to the bed and keeps coming toward me.
Unsure of her, I scramble to get as far as I can without actually falling out of the bed.
“Enough,” Evan hisses, his voice raised. “For god sake, Allyson, she was drugged last night. Give her some space instead of frightening her to death.” Evan quickly moves and sits beside me on the bed, his voice softening. “How are you feeling?”
I offer a wry smile. “As though I’ve swallowed a glass of bees.” Before I’ve finished talking, I have a glass of cold water in my hand that Evan poured from the bottle beside the bed. “I promise it’s fresh and untainted, and some Tylenol for the headache I can see behind your eyes.”
Smiling softly, I whisper, “I trust you.” I sip some of the water before handing him the glass. “Thank you. That feels so much better.” I slip beneath the quilt and settle back on the pillows, my head thankful. “I didn’t imagine last night, did I?”
Evan clenches his fists in his lap, so I reach out and caresses over his hands until he captures my hand with his.
“I’m safe now,” I whisper.
“I’ll always keep you safe, Jess.” He kisses my knuckles before laying my hand down beside me.
The cold woman is now completely irritated, and snaps, “I don’t think we mentioned last night, but I’m his fiancée.”
Fiancée!
Evan stills and slowly moves from the bed toward the cold woman. He can’t be engaged to her. No way. I may have only spent a night on the floor of Kix with Evan, but I know him enough to know there is no way she’s his type. She can’t be. He’s meant to be mine.
Lots of things run around in my head, but I do notice a slight hesitation in Evan’s step before he’s ushering her out of the room.
He looks pained as he glances at me. “Sleep it off, Jessie. I’ll be here when you wake. I won’t leave you alone.” The door closes behind him, leaving me alone.
Tears that I’ve kept at bay for far too long sudden start sliding down my face. Tears of frustration. Tears of longing for someone so far out of my reach.
“I love you Evan,” I whisper into my pillow as the tears consume me, until I sleep.

Evan
I love you Evan… Jessie’s whispered words weren’t meant for my ears, which made them all the more profound. My heart had pounded hard in my chest while I tried to stay calm and controlled. I had Allyson in the living room pacing because I showed more interest in Jessie than her, and I had Jessie mumbling words of love as she cried into the pillow in my bedroom. In my bed. All I want to do is join Jessie and hold her close. Whisper my own words of love.
As I sit forward with my head in my hands, I grip my hair tightly in frustration. Knowing the man for Jessie can never be me is like a sharp knife to the gut.
I’m not sure how long I’m lost in thought, but gradually the annoying tapping of Allyson’s foot has my eyes slowly drifting toward her. She’s annoyed and I guess has every right to be. I took her out although technically, we were out in a group of her friends. However, I guess not every guy goes out with one girl and takes another one home as well.
“Fiancée?” I ask, holding her gaze. “You are not my fiancée, Allyson.”
“Everyone expects us to marry, so I didn’t see the harm in claiming you in front of the other girl.” She narrows her eyes. “She is a girl, and needs to know where she stands with you, which is nowhere. I’m not going to let you ruin your life chasing such a young tail,” she scowls. “I’m also not heartless enough to kick her out when she’s obviously not well.”
Blinking, I laugh. “Last night you’d have let me leave her on the street.” I shake my head and move toward the window, resting my forehead against the cool glass. “I’ll take her home once she feels well enough to travel.” I sigh. “I spoke to her brother-in-law and he’s aware of what happened and where she is. For now, he isn’t going to tell her brother.”
“Why? He could come and pick her up.”
That isn’t what I want. I want her to stay in my bed forever.
It can’t happen.
“I’ll take her back.” I leave no room for discussion and Allyson knows she’s pushed enough.
After a few moments, Allyson tilts her head to the side, “She’s the reason why you won’t commit to me.” She bites on a sharp fingernail. “I knew there was someone else. I had no idea she was so young though.” She jumps up from the chair she’s been perched on. “We need to make our engagement official.”
My head is spinning as I try and catch up with her way of thinking. “I don’t want to marry you, Allyson. You know this. Don’t you?”
Her mouth narrows. “It doesn’t matter what I know. Your father wants this relationship between us, and you know there is no other choice. Besides,” she pauses, “being engaged will keep you from doing anything with that girl.” Allyson turns her back and heads toward the front door.
She doesn’t see my fists clench against the glass window. I know part of what she said is true. Keeping the engagement going will keep me from pursing what I want most—Jessie. However, her whispered words flutter through my mind and I’m not sure I have it in me to hurt her, even if it would be for her own good in the end. Plus, the farce of an engagement would enrage my father when he finds out there is nothing real to it.
Allyson is under the impression that I won’t go against my father. She doesn’t realize I will walk away from my family without a backward glance for the right woman. Allyson isn’t that woman.
Being drawn toward my bedroom, I slowly enter and find Jessie curled up on her side fast asleep. She’s beautiful. Her long dark hair is tangled around her shoulders and over my pillow. I’m never washing them again. She has delicate freckles over her nose and cheekbones that I love. I’ve imagined spending hours kissing each and every freckle I can find on her curvy figure. She’s not as slim as she was when we first met, and my mouth waters at the new curves hidden beneath my large T-shirt.
Swallowing hard, I move closer and climbing on the bed behind her, I wrap myself around her. Going on instinct instead of what’s right or wrong, I move closer until the curve of her bottom presses tightly against my groin and her back is against my front. The erection I’m trying to control pulses and throbs, trapped against her soft flesh.
Jessie reaches out for my hand and pulls my arm between her breasts, my hand she presses against her cheek while she snuggles more into me. I slide my other arm beneath her and wrap it around her waist, anchoring her to me. Her warm breath is like a caress over my skin.
“I’m glad you found me.” She wiggles her bottom and I hiss in reaction to the feel of her pressing against my groin.
“Stop moving,” I whisper between clenched teeth. “I’m trying to do the right thing, Jess, and you’re not helping.”
She quickly turns, a leg curls over my hip and she presses her breasts against my chest. “You can’t marry that woman,” she says, the tears in her eyes making my heart pound.
Although I think my heart’s pounding at the feel of her large breasts and hard nipples pressing into me. Not to mention how horny I am to have her in my arms, rubbing her panty clad pussy on my cock.
“Are you really engaged to her?” Her breath catches when the head of my dick presses between her legs.
Rolling her to her back, my hips press into her while I hold her wrists above her head. I hover over the delicious girl and drop my head between her breasts, thankful the T-shirt still covers her. I breathe heavily and force myself to lift my hips, desperate to pound her to the bed.
I jump from the bed, my cock aching badly as it sticks out in my loose sweats, creating a gap between the waistband and my skin. My eyes caress over Jessie lying so seductively in my bed, they linger on the hard tips of her breasts.
“We can’t be in this position again, Jess.” It pains me to tell her this when all I want to do
is toss my clothing from my heated skin and join her in my bed. “Yes, I’m engaged to her.”
Slamming the door behind me as I leave quickly, I head straight for the guest room shower cursing myself. I couldn’t look at her as I said those words, but as I strip and step under the heat of the shower it’s the feel of her against me that I’m thinking about. My cock is harder than it’s been since I met Jess, so as I wrap my hand around the bobbing flesh, the pleasure makes my eyes drift closed.
Her swollen breasts pressing against my chest, the hard nipples becoming more aroused as she moves against me, the wet pussy hidden behind her little panties, it’s all too much and my dick swells, spilling semen against the shower wall, dripping down my hand.
I can’t feel my legs as I clean myself up, staying in the shower longer than usual. I’m almost afraid of seeing Jessie again. Will she know what I’ve been doing by myself in here?
Shaking my head, I grab a towel and drying off, I grab another, wrapping it around my waist.
“I’m moving in.”
Those words are announced before I get the bathroom door fully opened so I’m extremely surprised to see Allyson back inside the apartment.
“I thought you’d left.” I push past her forgetting that my clothes are in my bedroom, which is currently occupied by Jessie.
She sidesteps bringing me up short before I barrel into her. Her hand reaches up and then her sharp fingernails trail down my torso, teasing where the towel is fastened.
About to knock her hands away, a slight noise brings my head up and I find Jessie’s narrowed gaze focused on Allyson’s hands.
Something tells me that my once quiet life has become more complicated.

Jessie
“Sorry for interrupting,” I mumble, turning my back to them.
My head is still full of cobwebs and my steps are unsteady as I quickly make my way back to Evan’s bedroom. I know Evan is engaged, but I thought better of him to go from touching me to being with her. Just one flick of her wrist and she’d have had Evan naked.
Jealousy had rushed through me and it still ate away at me. All these months I’d been thinking about Evan and imagining him missing me as I was him. How wrong was I. He hadn’t missed me at all. Not with the perfect looking woman whom he’d become engaged to. She was model slim with ice blonde hair falling down her back in stick-straight strands—the ice queen. She certainly looked the part.
I don’t know what I was thinking, going after him. That’s a lie. I do know. I’d gone after him because I wanted him to finish what he’d started. I’ve missed him all these months, but I guess he hasn’t missed me. Probably hadn’t spared me a second thought.
My heart wants what I’ll never have.
Crawling into bed, I pull the covers over my head and silently cry, feeling utterly miserable and completely alone.
“Jessie, please come out of there,” Evan says, a heavy sigh in his voice.
“No,” I reply while rapidly wiping at my eyes. “Go away.”
“It’s my bedroom.” I hear drawers opening and closing and wonder what he’s doing, so I peep out from the top of the covers and see a lot of naked flesh.
I grin and quickly cover my head again. “Nice ass,” I mutter and sense him pause.
He chuckles. “Wondered if you’d…peek.”
There is so much I could say right now, but I stay silent and listen to him getting dressed. “I forgot to take clothes with me when I went to the guest bedroom.”
“Hmm, you were in a rush to leave.”
“My life is complicated.” He sits on the bed and tugs the covers from over my head. “And you,” his eyes caress over my face before he holds my gaze, “are the biggest complication.”
“I don’t want to be a complication,” I admit. “I want to be a lot more.”
Evan offers me a wry smile. “You are so much more Jessie, that I don’t even know where to start.” He turns away and rests his elbows on his knees and lets his head drop into his hands. “Since I met you, I’ve pushed myself to get my life back, and until I saw you in the club last night, I thought I was achieving that. The sad truth is, I’m not. My focus hasn’t been on missing my sister, nor have I been fully involved in the work I’ve been doing for my father and his company, my focus has been on you. You’ve been a major distraction that I’ve worked so hard at forgetting about. Except it hasn’t worked.”
He shakes his head in frustration. “Look around you Jessie.” He moves to the foot of the bed and holds his arms wide. “This isn’t me. None of it is. All I ever wanted was a quiet life and to live out in the middle of nowhere. I just wanted peace and quiet. And what have I got? I have a big city apartment that people envy. I have a woman on my arm whom annoys the hell out of me, and I have job that I hate.” His head sags. “You have everything, Jessie. I can’t ever come in the way of your happiness.”
I frown and sit up in the bed. “What do you mean? If I was with you then I’d be happy. I wouldn’t constantly be wondering if you were okay, or if you had a girlfriend. I wouldn’t be wondering if you were thinking about me, or what you were doing. We’d both be happier, together, Evan.” I hold my breath hoping he sees everything my way. Hearing him speak so honestly is more than I expected.
Evan lifts his eyes to mine and admits, “I’m not engaged to Allyson. It’s what everyone expects, including her, but it’s the last thing I want. She was jealous when she saw the way I was looking at you, so used the only thing she could think of to try and keep us apart.” He offers a mirthless laugh. “I let her because I figured it would keep you away from me, and me away from you. It didn’t work out too well.” He drops to the end of the bed. “I didn’t want you to think I was an asshole who played around. I’m not. The only woman I want is you.”
“Then—”
“We still can’t. I have fourteen years on you.” He sighs. “Plus, I have a lot to sort out, and I don’t want you anywhere near me while I do it.”
My heart sinks as I hear he doesn’t want me, or does he? “You’re confusing me, Evan.”
“I’m sorry. I’m confused too.”
I crawl to the end of the bed and sit beside him. He watches me, but I don’t care anymore. He’s mine. He just has to realize that age doesn’t matter, not when two people love each other.
Resting my head on his shoulder, I snuggle into his side and let out a sigh when his arm comes around me.
“I always seem to need to turn my life around when I’m with you.” He hugs me. “I’m going to take you home, and then come back here to make everything right. I think it’s about time I make myself happy, instead of other people.”
“Am I included in the part about making yourself happy?” I whisper, hoping with all my heart I am.
“I want to say yes—”
“But you won’t,” I finish for him, and he frowns, rubbing at his brows.
“I can’t say what I feel for you out loud because if I do, I won’t ever be able to let you go, and I have to.”
I turn to him and cup his face in my small hands. “I don’t want you to let me go. Why can’t you understand that?”
He heavily sighs. “I can’t and won’t be the man to take advantage of you.”
“Ugh!” I storm from the bed, nearly face planting on the bedroom floor in my unsteady state.
Evan reaches out and tucks me in to his body, holding me tightly. He very sweetly kisses the top of my head. “I’m well aware that you have a mind of your own.” He chuckles. “You’re strong willed—”
“—and know what I want,” I stubbornly admit.
He doesn’t respond with words. A squeeze on my shoulders and he puts me away from him before he quickly leaves the room, closing the door behind him.
At least we agree that I’m strong willed.

Evan
Jessie sleeps in the passenger seat of my car as I drive her home. The winding country lanes remind me of everything I left behind that winter
s morning. I’d never expected to see her again, but here we are. My hands flex around the steering wheel as my eyes once again stray to the beautiful sleeping girl before moving back to the road.
If anyone had told me I’d end up falling in love with a young girl, I’d have laughed in their face. But here I am, in love with Jessie Kincaid. No doubt her brother, Reece, would have something to say about my feelings for her if they were to become known.
I’ve been telling myself that I have to walk away once I’ve dropped her safely at home. I know it’s the right thing to do, I’m just not sure I’m going to be able to do that this time around. She hasn’t been far from my thoughts, which is why I never promised Allyson anything. I know what she expected along with my family, but I never once spoke of any future together. The only person I can imagine anything like that with is currently stretching like a cat beside me.
“We’re nearly back,” she mutters. “I wish you’d have gotten lost.”
I chuckle. “It’s one road out of the city, Jessie.” I slow down and let my eyes drift over her, nearly swallowing my tongue when I get an eye full of yellow lace cupping a round breast. “Your shirt,” I hiss, quickly turning back to the road. “I’m going to hell!” I mutter.
“As though you haven’t seen a woman in her underwear before.”
From the corner of my eye I see her fastening the buttons on her shirt as she fidgets around in the seat. “I haven’t seen you before.”
I feel her eyes on me and wonder why I didn’t keep my mouth shut.
Jessie snickers. “I’m more than willing to show you.” Her fingers play with the buttons on her shirt.
“Don’t temp me.” I clear my throat. “We need to talk about something else so I can drive without being in pain.” I reach out to my groin and move my dick into a more comfortable position.
Jessie chuckles and then hides her amusement behind a hand. “If you think I’m going to make this easy on you Evan, then you don’t know us Kincaids. I let you walk out of my life before, but not this time.”
