It was a number of hours later before Shauna returned to the kitchen, only this time wearing one of Pepper's oversized shirts. She raided the fridge and cupboard, returning to the bedroom with a tray of cheese and crackers, some grapes, and a couple of glasses of wine.

They spent the weekend together, talking, eating, watching TV-even going for a long walk on the trail by the creek near Pepper's townhouse, holding hands as they took in the freshness of the sunny spring day. They loved just being with each other, and Pepper couldn't remember ever being this happy. Shauna reluctantly made her way home Sunday evening, giving him a long lingering kiss as they said their goodbyes. A short time later, Pepper went peacefully to bed. Things changed quickly when Wallace phoned him at four fifty-five in the morning.
