Like her, he didn’t believe in coincidences either. And there had been far too many happening today.
All the points Seren made were spot on, but it was essential - for both of their sakes - that she believed he was ignorant to the dangers, and hopefully he’d pulled that off.
He needed the protection that perceived ignorance and disinterest would bring in order that he could continue to investigate what was happening.
There was no doubt in his mind that without that degree of separation he would elicit far too much of the wrong kind of interest and leave both himself and Seren exposed. If that happened, neither of them would have the opportunity to get to the bottom of what was going on and who was behind it.
At the moment they were at a disadvantage. He and Seren were working blind. They had their suspicions. They knew something untoward was going on. And they were convinced that the dark forces were uniting as a faction in order to cause an uprising against all that was pure and virtuous in the realm.
It wasn’t too much of a stretch to imagine they were planning to overthrow the elders of the Mage Council in an attempt to stage a takeover of the Senedd. And Seren was right; to his shame, complacency and inattention had left them wide open to corruption within their own ranks and vulnerable to insurrection. He could only hope that it could be identified in time to suppress and extinguish it. Then, hopefully, they would learn by their mistakes.
Until then, or at least until he had a better idea of what he was dealing with, he needed to pretend that Seren Starlight was of no more importance to him than any other person in the entirety of the tri-world domain. Because he and Seren were being brought together for a reason, that was fate. But the black tide was doing its best to counteract their alliance, and that could only mean that their unified destiny was of the greatest importance for the future.
They were not an obvious pairing. In fact, he’d go as far as to say that to any superficial scrutiny they were a complete mismatch.
He would have thought so himself. Had, in fact.
But now he realised that was because Seren had been subjected to a smear campaign, which was a decade in the making. A sneaky, underhand manoeuvre designed to ridicule and undermine her reputation. A campaign so wide reaching and extensive, that he was afraid it might even be responsible for the disappearance of her parents.
And that could only mean one thing.
Seren Starlight was the lynch pin.
Her presence was at the very heart of whatever was going on.
She was the key.
And that meant Siarl needed to do everything in his power to keep her safe.
Even if it meant walking away from her.
