“I will.” He watched her go, noting how her rounded ass swayed perfectly. What the hell was wrong with him? He pulled out his wallet, dropped some bills on his table, and headed out to his truck. He had only had that one beer, so he was perfectly fine to drive over to Jane’s school.
Would she remember him? God, he hoped so. If not, he was about to make a complete ass of himself.
When he’d left her in his hotel room bed more than two years ago, he’d thought he’d see her again sooner. He’d started to write her so many times or call. But he’d known that little teases like that would have only made being so far away that much harder. So, he’d waited until he could get here and see her in the flesh, touch her, hold her.
God, he was a fucking sap.
…
“Hey, Janie.”
Her heart stopped. There was only one person in the world who’d ever called her that. She looked up from her desk to find him standing in her classroom doorway wearing worn jeans that slung low on his narrow hips and a tight blue T-shirt that did little to hide his sculpted chest.
She forgot how to breathe. And blink. And possibly swallow. She quickly reached up to touch her mouth and make sure she wasn’t drooling.
“Kevin?”
He walked toward her looking so damn good he hardly seemed real.
“What…what’re you doing here?” she asked, coming to her feet. She probably looked like shit. What was she even wearing? Quickly, she glanced down—knee-length dress with her favorite sandals.
“I’m in town,” he said.
“Yeah, I got that much, but why?”
“Would you believe it’s because I missed you?”
She snorted. “Nope.” She stepped around the desk.
He chuckled then closed the distance between them so he stood directly in front of her. So close she could smell the clean scent of his shaving cream and aftershave.
His jaw tightened. His eyes traveled the length of her, and he swallowed. “You look good, Janie.”
You look good enough to eat.
His face split in a shit-eating grin.
She winced. “I said that out loud, didn’t I?”
“Yeah, baby, you did.” He pulled her to him and embraced her, wrapping her into his big arms and pressing her against his hard body.
She inhaled slowly, closed her eyes. They’d only spent a weekend together, less than a full weekend, and the majority of that time, they’d been naked and in bed. Still she’d felt a connection with him unlike any she’d felt with any other man. And the minute she was in his arms, it flared to life again. As if her body recognized something in him that even she didn’t understand.
“I thought about you a lot over there,” he murmured into her hair.
“Yeah? I thought about you, too.” More than he’d ever know. Like every time she looked into her daughter’s eyes. His daughter’s eyes.
“You don’t know how glad that makes me to hear,” he said, still holding her tight to him. “You seeing anyone, Janie?”
“What? Oh, no, there’s no one.”
“Thank fuck.” And with that, he cupped her face and kissed her. It wasn’t a gentle sweet seductive kiss. It was an all-out assault on her senses. He devoured her, his tongue sweeping into her mouth. She met him stroke for stroke, and he rewarded her with a growl. His hands slid down over her shoulders and across her back until he’d gripped her bottom. He squeezed and pressed her to him. There was no denying his hard length when he tilted his hips against her.
So good, it was so damn good. How long had it been since a man had touched her like this? She’d had a handful of dates, but none of them had gone further than a kiss and a grope or two. But this, him, Kevin, her body was on high alert. He squeezed her ass and ground his dick into her again, and she instinctively lifted her legs, wrapping herself around him.
Instantly, his erection was pressed to her core. No doubt her panties were already so wet he could feel it through his pants, but she didn’t care. She wanted him to keep rubbing against her like that. She could come just like this like some horny teenager dry humping on her parents’ couch.
“Fuck, Janie, you feel so damn good.” His lips left her mouth and trailed down her throat to nibble on her collarbone. He set her down on the edge of her desk but didn’t move away from her. One large hand slid between their bodies, and his fingers pulled the elastic of her practical cotton panties aside. He dipped one finger into her. “You’re soaked, baby. This all for me?”
She made some nonsensical sound that wasn’t quite a word as his finger pumped in and out of her and his lips continued their seductive exploration of her neck.
His thumb pressed to her clit and moved in a slow circle, and he inserted a second finger into her pussy. His thumb continued its slow assault on her clit while his fingers fucked in and out of her. Oh God, she was going to come, right here on her desk. Two seconds later she exploded around him, crying out his name and clinging to his shoulders.
When she could finally string a semi-coherent thought together, she reached behind and opened the top drawer of her desk and pulled out a condom and handed it to him.
“Should I ask?”
She shrugged. “High school teacher. I’d rather they be prepared,” she said, all the while working on his belt and then zipper. She reached in and pulled him out then slid her hand up and down his hard cock. God, she’d missed his dick. Nothing could compare. She’d tried so many dildos it’s a wonder they hadn’t created a dildo-of-the-month club just for her.
He grabbed himself out of her hand and slid down the condom and then pushed into her in one great thrust. They both gasped at the sensation. “I really want to go slow, Janie, but I can’t. I’ve got to just fuck you, baby, fuck you hard.”
“Yes, please do that.”
He didn’t wait for her to say anything else, he just started pushing himself into her. Slamming, really, and it felt incredible.
“Yeah, there it is. You feel so good. This pussy is mine. Only mine.”
YES! Only his.
He knew how to angle himself to hit that miraculous spot inside her. Immediately, another climax started building. He played her body like a maestro, knowing precisely where to touch her to bring her earth-shattering pleasure. He pulled her to him and kissed her again, his tongue mimicking his cock, and she kissed him back with everything she had.
“I need you to come, baby,” he said, his deep voice tight and low. Again, he strummed his thumb against her clit.
“Oh God, oh God,” she chanted. “Kevin, I’m going to come.”
“Good, baby, come all over me. Come all over my cock.”
And she did, this one lasting longer and shuddering through her more powerfully than the last one. Two thrusts later and he growled his release in her hair. “Janie,” he groaned. Then he pulled her to him and kissed her head. He was quiet for several moments, and they stayed like that, him still inside her.
“Would you believe me if I told you this is not why I came here today?” he asked.
She chuckled.
He pulled himself out and disposed of the condom. Then he redid his pants and forked his fingers through his hair. “Shit, Janie, I didn’t mean to accost you on your desk. And we’re at a school.” He shook his head. “I’m sorry.”
She hopped down from her desk and straightened her clothes. The heat from her blush was creeping up her neck to settle in her cheeks. She’d just had sex on her desk. And she’d instigated it. She’d handed him a condom and undone his pants. She puffed out a breath and squeezed her eyes closed.
“How did you find me?” she asked.
“I’m a SEAL, babe. I have my ways.” Then he gave her a crooked grin. “Also, I asked at the bakery in town when I stopped in for a coffee. They said that school hadn’t started yet, but that you’d likely be in your classroom setting things up.”
She nodded. “Gotta love a small town. Everyone always knows where I am.”
“If it makes you feel any
better, there were no other cars in the parking lot when I got here.”
“Oh, I know we’re alone. I’m the only one that comes in this time of the summer.” She bit down on her lip. She should tell him, just come right out and tell him. But the words wouldn’t come. And really, it didn’t matter. He’d be leaving town again, and she’d likely never see him. Or maybe he’d come back in another two years. Humiliation and shame heated her skin. What had she been thinking?
“I’m not going anywhere anytime soon. I’d like to see you again. Perhaps even take you out on a real date where I don’t maul you like a horny Viking.”
“Yeah, I’m not sure that’s a good idea.” She jotted down her address on a sticky note and handed it to him. “But we do need to talk. Right now, though, I’ve got to go.” She grabbed her purse and practically sprinted from her room. She didn’t look back. She didn’t pass go. She definitely didn’t collect two hundred dollars.
Ten minutes later she was in her car on the way home, and she hit the Bluetooth to call Dani.
“Hey, bitch,” Dani said.
“Shit, shit, shit,” she said, banging her head on the steering wheel as she sat at the stop light.
“Uh-oh, last time you did that it was about hot Navy SEAL guy.”
Jane winced. “Yep. He’s back.”
“What did he say about the baby?”
“Nothing. I didn’t tell him. Instead I rode him like a cheap carnival ride. In my classroom.” She dropped her head onto the steering wheel. “What’s wrong with me?” Then the car behind her started honking its horn, so she looked up and drove through the intersection. Thankfully she didn’t live that far from the school.
“There’s nothing wrong with you. He’s the father of your child and the hottest sex you’ve ever had.” Then she chuckled. “And it’s been a while. You obviously needed some.”
“Oh, I definitely needed some. I’d already decided to start ordering my batteries online, because I’m pretty sure the clerks at Target are onto me.” She pulled into her driveway and killed the engine. “He’s the only man I’ve ever been with who makes me feel sexy.”
“Blake didn’t?”
“Nope. Most of our times were spent in the dark, half dressed. And not the kind of half-dressed sex you have because you’re just too damn impatient to wait until you’re naked…no, this was intentional. We left our shirts on because he wasn’t so much a boob guy.”
“How’s he straight and not a boob guy? Besides, you have great boobs.”
“Thanks, babe.”
“You’re going to tell him, though, right?”
“Yeah. I just needed to get out of there and think. I gave him my address and told him to come by sometime. I’ll tell him there.”
“You need to tell him.”
“I know, I know. Listen, I’m home and gotta get inside to see my girl. We’ll chat later.”
“Sure. And Jane, I mean it, you really need to tell him about Stella. He has a right to know.”
Jane blew out a breath. “I know.”
And she would.
Chapter Five
Kevin made his way up the sidewalk, taking in the small blue bungalow. The grass needed mowing, the front bed needed weeding, and the white paint on the front door was chipped. Other than that, it was a homey place, with the brightly colored flowered welcome mat. He pressed the button for the doorbell and waited.
She’d shot out of the school yesterday like her ass was on fire. He figured he owed her another apology for fucking her right there on her desk in a high school. Like he was a fucking Neanderthal.
“Just a minute,” Jane’s voice called from inside the house.
The door opened to reveal Jane standing barefoot wearing blue jean shorts, a T-shirt, and a kid on her hip. Jane’s eyes widened when she took in the sight of him. “Kevin, what are you doing here?”
“I wanted to see you. And you said we needed to talk, remember?”
A frown settled over her features.
His eyes moved to the child hanging on Jane’s hip, a girl judging from the pink bow dangling from the kid’s wild blond ringlets. “Babysitting?”
“Not exactly.”
It was then he realized Jane was angry. It rolled off her in waves that hit him with actual heat. Her blue-gray eyes were narrowed, her jaw set, and there was no smile to be found.
The baby said something to her that Kevin didn’t understand. He hadn’t spent a lot of time with kids.
Jane turned her gaze and smiled at the little girl then answered, “You eat your peaches, and then you can have goldfish.” She turned to face Kevin again. “I’m busy right now. Maybe we can talk later.”
He opened his mouth to speak then closed it. Yesterday she’d seemed happy to see him. God, the memories of her shuddering on his cock made him hard all over again.
The toddler on her hip squirmed. “Down, Mama.”
Now that he understood. Mama?
Jane set the little girl down, and the kid turned and looked directly at Kevin. She gazed up at him with enormous blue eyes. Eyes that looked alarmingly familiar. He looked back up at Jane, took in her posture, her possessive hand on the little girl’s shoulder. Then back down at those blue eyes…eyes just like the ones that peered back at him every time he looked in a mirror.
Holy fuck.
He shook his head and turned and walked away.
Kevin knew how to deal with threats, both domestic and foreign. He knew how to disassemble explosives, how to extract civilians from dangerous situations, but what he didn’t know how to was deal with whatever shitstorm had just become of his life.
He sat in his truck, the engine idling, outside Cade’s offices.
It didn’t take long for his friend to come outside. He ambled over to the truck, the only indicator that he had any kind of injury his slight limp. Kevin pushed the button to lower the window.
“You coming in or planning to sit out here and make my clients nervous?” Cade asked.
Kevin didn’t even bother looking over at his friend.
“Okay, Jessup, cut the engine and get your ass inside,” Cade said. “That’s an order.”
Cade was the closest thing to a brother Kevin had ever had. Not even when he’d lived in the boys’ house for seven months when he’d been in middle school. He’d found a family in the SEALs, but none so much as Cade Matthews. So he did what he was instructed and followed his friend inside.
The offices for the security company that Cade ran were unassuming. Cade saved the expenses for where they were needed—surveillance and protection. They stepped into Cade’s private office, and he closed the door. Cade sat at his desk and opened a drawer to pull out a bottle of whiskey. He silently poured two glasses then set one across from him.
“Talk.”
Kevin downed the amber-colored liquid and relished the burning in his throat and eyes. “I saw Jane.”
“Oh fuck, is she married?”
“Uh no, but she has a kid.”
“And? You hate kids?”
“That’s irrelevant, but no. I don’t really know how to be around kids.”
“Then what’s the problem?”
He scratched a hand over his head, noting that his hair was longer than the usual tight cut. “I’m pretty sure the kid is mine.” There was no “pretty sure” about it. He knew, without a doubt. Jane’s expression had confirmed it. And the little girl’s eyes…there was no way she wasn’t his.
Cade leaned forward and poured another two fingers in Kevin’s glass. He was quiet for several moments, waiting for Kevin to say something more or considering his advice. Cade was six years older than Kevin and had been commanding officer until the IED incident that had sent the older man home for good. Now Kevin was the commanding officer, back for rehabilitation from his own injury. But he had every intention of returning as soon as he had the doctor’s green light.
“So just marry her,” Cade finally said.
“What? I can’t do that.”
&nb
sp; “Why not?”
“Because she didn’t tell me.”
Cade’s brows rose. “Do you know whether or not she tried to tell?”
“That is not the point.” Kevin took another sip, a slower one this time, really to give himself something to do with his hands more than a need for the alcohol. He’d never been one to dull the edges of life with any substances.
“That’s exactly the point,” Cade argued.
“What if it’s not my kid?”
“You just said it was.”
“But I don’t know anything for sure.” He did know, though. He felt it in his gut. He tilted his head back and looked at the paneled ceiling.
“What the hell, son. Didn’t you ask her?”
“I was a little busy freaking the fuck out.”
“You’re an idiot, you know that?”
“Fuck you,” Kevin spat.
“Go back. Right now. And ask her to marry you.”
“I’m not going to do that. We hardly know each other.”
“You know enough. You’re crazy about her. You haven’t stopped pining for her for the past two years.”
“I haven’t been pining. I do not pine.”
“Yes, you have.”
“What if it’s not my kid?”
Cade crossed his tree trunk–sized arms across his barrel chest. “Unless she’s happily married to someone else, does it really matter?”
Dammit. The man had a point. But marriage? He’d never even considered that. He had been thinking about Jane since the night they met. He hadn’t even touched another woman since then. But a kid?
He didn’t know the first thing about being a dad. Hell, he didn’t even know how to be part of a family. He’d been on his own, more or less, since he was seven.
…
“I’m so fucking angry with him,” Jane whisper yelled, doing her best not to wake up her daughter.
Her best friend, Dani, nodded knowingly.
She folded two more shirts then began her rant again. “How dare he come back into town and seduce me again!”
