Note from the Author
Thank you for purchasing and reading the third book in “The Fifth Survivor” serial series. It takes me a lot of work to write these books, so your investment in time to read means a lot to me. In episode 3, George realizes the plot has grown too big for him to stay in NYC. He makes a tough decision whether to tell his lover, Elaine, the truth about Hybrid and his probe.
He decides that he has no choice but to run up to Westchester County and hide out. Will he accept the invitation from the mystery woman to see her? If he does accept the invitation, is the mystery woman really on his side or does she have a secret agenda? Finally, when will the next outbreak take place? Find out as The Fifth Survivor continues.
I would also like to send a personal thanks to all my ARC readers who took the time to read this book before I hit publish. In fact, I even gave you your own section where I give all of you a shoutout. You guys are the true all-stars by telling me your honest opinions of how you liked the book. It’s because of you guys, my gamelit zombie series has expanded into a full universe filled with alternative storylines and conspiracy theories.
Note: You must read the previous episodes before you read episode 3. While a few things from the previous episodes will be mentioned, you will be lost if you start here. You can read “The Fifth Survivor” series if you haven’t read the main series, Angel’s Nightmare Adventure as this is a side quest.
Chapter 1
July 11th, 2007
After barely escaping the laboratory with his life, George remains silent while Elaine remains angry. She drives recklessly as she swerves between lanes and nearly crashing a couple of times.
“Oh boy, now I remember why I never got into a relationship with Elaine. She gets batty quite easily.” He says in his head.
Rushing through traffic on Atlantic Avenue, she makes an illegal left turn right onto Ashford Street until she gets to George’s house. Finding a spot in front of his house, she parks her car. George and Elaine enter his house. The two of them sit on George’s sofa before Elaine gets up and points a pistol at him.
“Alright George, cut the crap. The sweet Elaine is gone and it’s time for you to give me some answers. What in the hell is going on?” Elaine asks.
What will George do?
1. Make up a lie (Passive)
2. Spill the beans about the Hybrid Corporation (Aggressive)
You have chosen option #2
Georges breathes a sigh and begins to talk, “Elaine… Before I start, I like to say I’m sorry and like to ask you to stop pointing that gun at me.”
“Hmm… ok. It was a toy gun anyway. I just wanted to scare you. Now, what is going on?” She asks.
“You ever heard of the Hybrid Corporation?” He asks and Elaine nods her head.
George continues, “They recently came here looking to expand their empire. As a journalist, I had this instinctive feeling that they were up to no good. So when I went to interview Anthony Clark, I decided to sneak into the laboratory of their Headquarters and steal a sample of the Raven Hawk Vaccine. I arrived back home to give the sample to my best friend, Dave.”
“You mean your friend Dave that killed himself?” Elaine asks.
“Yes, that Dave. He was supposed to test the vaccine to see what it really was. You might say it was a tragedy that he killed himself. Sadly, it was no tragedy. Dave didn’t kill himself. He was actually murdered.” George answers.
“The news said the police found he had killed himself.” Elaine replies.
“Of course, Hybrid paid off the officers to post a bogus method of death. Here’s when things get interesting. Dave used to be friends with Danny Witwer.” He responds.
“You mean the president of Woodhull Hospital, right?” She asks.
“He ‘used’ to be the president. Anyway, it looks like Dave trusted Witwer with the Raven Hawk research. Witwer had other plans though. I came to find out that Danny was in cahoots with Hybrid for the money. I went to the hospital to probe in on a meeting that Danny was having with Anthony. The meeting was canceled though and after that announcement, all hell broke loose. Everybody except me and a few turned into zombies.”
“George, how did the people turn into zombies?”
“Danny performed a ‘test’ with a gas version of the Raven Hawk. I read a document indicating that Raven Hawk was not a vaccine, but an actual virus. As a result, the zombie outbreak started and I had to survive. To make the long story short, when you came to rescue me the giant that was chasing us is a by-product of the virus. At the end of the day, the so-called cure for cancer is just a virus developed by a company who intends to wipe the world off the map to start a New World Order.” He answers.
“So who were those guys in hazmat suits chasing you?” She asks.
“I sneaked into the Clark Family mansion to find any evidence that proves Hybrid is up to no good. I also had an officer from the 75th precinct ready to admit that Dave was indeed murdered. Too bad when I was forced inside of the mansion by the zombies and creatures that remained in the area, the officer was eaten alive. Next thing I knew, there was a laboratory under the mansion within the sewer system. Hybrid had built an underground empire from right under our noses.” George finishes his explanation.
“So all of a sudden you decided to become a vigilante? George, you worry me. I really don’t want to lose you. Why didn’t you say anything earlier?” She asks.
“Listen, you’re not safe around me anymore. I’m sure I’ve become public enemy number 1 for Hybrid and I don’t want your life in danger. I never intended in putting your life in danger. After all, if Hybrid suspects that you have damaging information they will go after you. They’re not afraid to kill just to hide their sick agenda.” He answers.
“Where will you go? Westchester?”
“I’m going to Westchester indeed, but now you know the real reason and it’s not for family matters. That mystery woman who
saved us…” He is cut off by Elaine.
“Is your new lover, right? I should have known. Look I know I’m married, but I been thinking about divorcing my husband. I guess it is what it is, right?” Elaine says.
“Wow Elaine, you are sure acting batty today. I guess it must be your age.”
“Watch it there!” She replies angrily.
“I still don’t know who the woman is, but I do owe her a visit as she saved my butt many times already.”
“So you’re going to see her, not knowing who the hell she is. What if she is just using you?”
“That’s true, she is not necessarily being transparent about who she is and you might just be right. However, staying here is no longer an option. I can’t afford to put you in danger and I’m finding out that I really can’t trust too many people out here. The 75th precinct has been paid off, so being in the same place with them is asking for trouble. If they could falsify Dave’s death, imagine what else they’ll do for money. Elaine, you cannot tell anybody about this nor can you call me. I will call you when I feel the heat is dying out, ok?”
“Ok… it will be hard not to talk to you. I’ll miss you…”
“I know Elaine, but I have to stop Hybrid before they cause any more mayhem. Even if it means I have to go ghost, it will be worth it when we don’t have to worry about the undead taking over. I plan to leave tomorrow afternoon and only you know this. I need you to drop me off at the port authority where I’ll catch a bus to Westchester. From there, I’m on my own. You think you can take me there?”
“Yes babe, I’ll take you there. My husband won’t be around, so that won’t be a problem. Don’t mind me. I’m just shocked that you were willing to hide such a secret from me knowing we’re best friends.”
“Sorry Elaine, it was to protect you. I just hope I haven’t put you in any real danger.”
“I understand and thanks for trying to protect me.”
Before Elaine leaves George’s house, she grabs him and hugs him.
“Before you go, babe, I wanted to give you this.”
She kisses George passionately as if she feels she will never see him again. At first, George is hesitant to show his true feelings.
What will George do?
1. Tell her respectfully no in respect of his wife. (Passive)
2. Tell her no as he’s not ready yet (Neutral)
3. Go for broke! (Aggressive)
You have chosen option #3
A few seconds later, he grabs Elaine by her hips and returns a kiss of his own.
“I love you, George…” Elaine says.
He nods his head and doesn’t reply back. He simply escorts her out of his house and into her car. As she drives off, he continues to feel sorry for putting her in his mess. He hopes that Hybrid doesn’t find out and begin to track her.
Once Elaine drives off, he goes back to his house. George grabs a bottle of Brandy and pours it inside a cup. Sitting on the sofa, he thinks about who to leave the house to or if he should. While Harry would be a good choice, he is out of town alot due to his job. He also thinks about where he’ll relocate to in Westchester as he wants to avoid living with family as he doesn’t want to put them in any danger.
George in a half-drunk state figures that he’ll think about that when he gets there.
After killing the first cup of Brandy, he pours another cup without regard to the fact that he hasn’t eaten anything. He just wants to fall asleep and forget all the chaos, even if it’s for only a few hours. A drunken George falls asleep on the sofa still wearing the police uniform he found.
July 12th, 2007
Not hearing the alarm, George gets up slowly and looks at the clock to realize it’s already ten-thirty in the morning. He fights through his hangover and takes a quick shower in an attempt to wake up. Taking a shower in cold water is enough to wake him up for the most part. His head still feels a little heavy, but he fights it off.
With a couple of big suitcases that he has in the closet, he gathers whatever clothes he can fit and places them inside. After both suitcases are filled, he grabs a quick bite to eat for lunch. When the clock strikes noon, he hears the phone ring. Picking up the phone, he answers.
“Hello, this is George. Who am I talking to?”
“Hey George, this is Chief Hickey. I’m afraid I got some bad news.”
“I already know about Reuben, I found him dead in the mansion. I went to the mansion to see if I can gather dirt. I’m afraid that I can’t go on with the case for now.”
“Why is that George?”
“I bumped into Herman Clark and he got a good look at me. When I found the secret underground laboratory, he must have alerted the guards. I was nearly picked off until a strange woman helped me escape. As grateful as I am to her, I can’t really say I trust her as she found her way to a Hybrid facility easily. She might be working with Hybrid as a rogue or she has her own secret agenda.”
“Do you have any clue who she might be?”
“All I know is where she lives and that she knows me.”
“Be careful George. The fact that she knows you is rather dangerous.”
“Perhaps, but she did show me where she lives. I’m sure nobody trying to hide their intentions would do that. Besides, she might be my best chance at defeating Hybrid. I have an interview with a supervisor in Westchester a couple of months from now. This might sound nuts, but I might have to trust that woman as she did save me a couple of times.”
“How about what you found here?”
“I’ll hand you what I found and you’ll have to see if you can build something out of the evidence. I wish I could stay, but Hybrid might be tracking me as we speak. I’ll be there later before I leave for Westchester.”
“Ok George, take care.” Chief Hickey says before hanging up.
Looking at the time, he wants to be on the road soon to avoid rush hour traffic. Grabbing his two big suitcases, he brings them by the front door. He calls Elaine.
“Hi baby, I missed you. That kiss was pure sweetness even for an old batty woman like me. If only you didn’t have to leave, I would rock your world.” Elaine says.
“Well… thank you. However, you’ll have to save the sweet talk. I need you to pick me up now. I need to stop off somewhere before going to the Port Authority bus terminal.”
“Ok hun, anything for you.”
“Thanks, I promise when I get back, I’ll repay you.”
“I’m sure you will you hunk.”
George hangs up the phone and waits for Elaine to show up. After about a twenty minutes pass, he sees Elaine’s red car pull up. He signals for her to wait in the car while he pulls his suitcases out towards his porch. Once he has everything, George carries his suitcases to Elaine’s car.
He walks up to the front door for the last time to lock the top and bottom lock. George begins to tear up knowing this will be the last time he will be able to sleep in his own house for a long time.
“Goodbye Cypress Hills, I can only hope when I come back everything will still be the way it was.” He says to himself.
Wiping his eyes of his tears, he puts on a straight face when he walks back to Elaine’s car. Jumping into the car, he takes one last look at his house.
“Babe, I know you were crying.” She says.
“No I wasn’t, I was just locking the door.”
“Don’t lie to me. It’s ok to cry. I know it’s hard for you to leave your house. Now, are you sure you want to do this?”
“I don’t want to, but in reality, I have no choice. Either this or NYC is doomed to a zombie outbreak of greater impact.”
“I understand. So you said you had to go somewhere first?”
“Yeah, take me to the 104th precinct. I need to see a friend there.”
Elaine drives George towards the 104th precinct. As she drives up Highland Place and through the park, she sees the construction site that George had sneaked into. Elaine manages to drive through the site without incident as she drives towar
ds the Jackie Robinson Parkway.
Taking the highway one exit, she gets off on Cypress Hills Street and takes it going north. Once she gets on Cypress Hills street, she enters Glendale. It is a middle-class neighborhood that is much quieter than Cypress Hills. People like to call Glendale the quiet or lite version of its southern neighbor.
Going around the smaller streets, Elaine gets to the 104th precinct in five minutes and parks around the corner. George takes the pictures and whatever evidence he managed to salvage from last night’s mission. Walking into the building, he lets the receptionist know he’s there before he goes up to see chief Hickey.
When he gets to the chief’s office, Chief Hickey is sitting on his desk gathering paperwork.
“Hey chief here is all the evidence I gathered.”
Looking over the documents, George realizes not every single one is on the table.
“Crud, I must have dropped something when I was being chased. Damn it…” He says in his head.
“Is this it?” The chief asks.
“I had found more, but I lost them. I was nearly killed by the guards as I was trying to escape.” George answers.
“What a shame. Well, I’ll see what I can do from here. You’re sure you’ll be alright in Westchester?”
“I should be fine. I am doing an interview with Anthony Clark, so I might get dirt on a new project up there. I just need the heat to die down here.”
“What about that mystery woman you were talking about? I urge you caution if you do bump into her.”
“Perhaps, but she might have more information on Hybrid that even we don’t know about. For now, she is my only true lead in this case.” George says and places his hands on the Chief’s shoulders. He continues by saying, “One piece of advice… Don’t trust anyone, not even your best friend and especially anybody you might consider a friend in the 75th precinct. Hybrid has the most dangerous weapon out there and it’s not their creatures of doom. It’s their ability to buy people to join their army. Best thing is to keep this to yourself until I return.”
“I understand George. Please take care of yourself out there. I’m sure gonna miss you.”
