Description
He’s the grumpy billionaire who lives by a million rules.
Never do relationships.
Yeah… that one’s kinda common.
I don’t do relationships either.
So we agree on one night only.
A night of no strings attached pleasure.
It won’t hurt to enjoy myself for once, right?
How am I going to let go when one night leads to several.
And I find out I’m pregnant with his baby.
Prologue
Maggie
And then there was one, I thought. I picked up my glass of wine and drained it. Everybody else was doing the same so I didn’t look out of place. Easton, Missy’s boyfriend had just proposed to her. It looked like she was genuinely surprised and honestly, so was I. Easton hadn’t said anything to us when the two of them had invited us to their dinner party, so I had no reason to suspect anything.
Kind of weird though. I mean who came up with the whole public proposal thing anyway? Wasn’t it embarrassing? It was an inconvenience to the people who had to watch it and what if she said no?
Careful, Mags, you sound mighty single right about now and not the fun, flirty kind.
That was the natural progression of things anyway. First came love, then came marriage, and then the baby in the baby carriage. I rolled my eyes and turned away, looking for more wine. I was happy for then, seriously, I was. Missy was my boss and I had started to feel safe calling her my friend as well, but out of the four of us in the friend group; her, my old colleague and friend, Brenna, and their friend, Eddy, I was the only single one.
I knew it didn’t really make sense, but when Missy wasn’t engaged, it didn’t feel as lonely over here at the metaphorical singles table. I topped up my glass with wine and since I didn’t want to look like the one drowning her sorrows, I offered to top up other peoples as well.
“I’ll take some, thank you,” Toby, Easton’s colleague said when I offered him some wine. He smiled and we made brief eye contact. His date, what was her name? Alyssa? She didn’t want any. Good call. She had barely eaten any of the delicious food that Easy and Missy had catered tonight, and she was about the size of a twig so more booze would bowl her over. I watched her sit there a little awkwardly. She was the only true stranger at this get-together, knowing neither Easton nor Missy… nor did she seem to know Toby all that well if we were being honest, but that was none of my business.
Toby and I were the only ones invited who weren’t in a couple and while he had brought a date, I had not. I didn’t have anyone on the roster, not because I couldn’t find anyone but because I didn’t want anyone filling that role. When I made that decision, I hadn’t anticipated feeling this sorry for myself about being unattached.
Being seemingly surrounded by loving couples on every side, you would think that I caught the bug and wanted to join in, but at this point in my life, I was over it.
Now, those might have sounded like the sentiments of a fifty-year-old woman who had finally divorced her philandering husband after a thirty-year marriage, but they weren’t. They were mine. At the grand old age of twenty-seven, I had had enough. Maybe I didn’t have as much reason to be so over love and relationships as someone who had had it worse, but I was.
Since the meal was over, everyone was kind of dispersing around Easton’s loft, mingling, and having some more wine before they made their way home. Eddy and Brenna were admiring the brand, spanking new ring on Missy’s finger but I didn’t want to approach. I didn’t want my negativity ruining what was a happy night for them.
There was a terrace attached to the loft, completely private which we hadn’t used because it had rained earlier today, and it was all wet. The weather had turned though, and the doors were open, letting in a nice cool breeze. I noticed Toby and his date walking out together. As everyone kind of paired off with their dates or spouses, I felt myself becoming the third wheel. It was time to go home.
I picked up my wine glass and went over to Missy and Easton so that I could bid them good night.
“You’re leaving already?” Missy asked.
“Yup, early morning for work tomorrow,” I said with a smirk. She knew I was lying about that part. I worked for her and early mornings were completely unheard of. I was fully expecting her to tell me to take tomorrow and probably a couple more days off so that she and Easton could celebrate their engagement.
“No really?” Missy asked. She looked at me quizzically, but she didn’t push me to stay or ask any questions. She got it. I had gotten to watch the not so rosy parts of her relationship with Easton leading up to this beautiful union so I knew she was empathetic.
“Feel free to grab a bottle of wine if you want,” Easton said as I hugged him good night. He was a good guy, I was happy for Missy but tonight, my emotions were
a mess. I was going from that, to jealous, to happy, to sentimental and everything all over again every time that I blinked.
I thanked him and went around the room telling everyone else good night. Last on the list was Toby and his date and I had seen them walk out onto the balcony. Toby was a very new acquaintance for me, plus having only really spoken about work matters, and I had no idea who his date was. Still, it was only polite. I walked out onto the terrace and spotted the two of them locked in an embrace. I stopped because I didn’t want to walk into anything. They hadn’t noticed me yet. They were talking.
“Next week, what do you say?” the woman was saying, playing with the lapels on Toby’s jacket.
“Next week?” he asked her.
“Yeah, just a short little getaway. A long weekend at the beach.”
He chuckled softly. “Yeah, and which beach were you thinking? The Hamptons?”
“Hmm, I was thinking something more tropical?”
“Like where? Miami?”
She laughed.
“Maybe Tulum? Or somewhere in the Caribbean?”
“That sounds great. If you end up going, I hope you have a good time.”
Her hands dropped from his lapels.
“If I was going, I would want to go with you.”
“That sounds a little bit too much like a romantic getaway and I thought we had an understanding.”
My eyes widened. I had a vague idea that Toby was sort of a fuckboy but it was still a shocker watching him in action.
Most of what I knew about him had come from Missy and well the term pussy hound had been uttered a few times in reference to him. He had a reputation for being seen with a different beautiful model every other week. Looked like this one had gotten the wrong idea about their relationship. I felt sorry for her and then I felt guilty for eavesdropping on what was probably a really embarrassing moment.
“You can’t be serious about that.”
“Trust me, sweetie, I am. I was just about to go tell everybody bye so I could get out of here. Are you coming with?”
“What do you mean am I coming with? You brought me here, didn’t you?”
“Well, a gentleman never assumes. If you get into a car with me, I am going to assume that you want to come home with me. That means a night of mind-blowing no strings attached sex and a cordial goodbye in the morning. Nothing more. Maybe I’ll pay for your cab tomorrow but that’s it. If that’s not what you’re looking for, then I’ll pay for your cab tonight and this is it.”
Her hand cracked across his face. She slapped him. I staggered backward a little bit; not expecting that.
“I am not a fucking whore. You think you can take me out and then proposition me like that? Fuck you.” She started stalking away in my direction and I hurried back into the house. She walked past me, barely registering my existence. So much for telling the two of them goodbye. I went ahead and grabbed my coat and got ready to leave.
That was just the way love worked for some people. Love wasn’t always what my friends got to enjoy with their partners. Sometimes, it was a transaction between people who needed something specific and didn’t want to stay around for the ugly stuff.
I mean, look at Toby and the girl he had just insulted. I was one hundred percent sure; I would bet my firstborn child on the fact that their reasons for even being seen together were surface level at best. He wouldn’t be seen with her if she wasn’t a smoking hot twenty-year-old model, and she wouldn’t be with him if he wasn’t filthy rich.
I could only assume so much about Toby since we were still only acquaintances, but it seemed like he was the type that didn’t do things by the book, in a bad way. Love and relationships in his life looked like transactions that you did at the bank.
As long as everyone got what they were expecting and asked for, was there anything wrong with that?
I waited for the elevator and heard someone walk up and stand next to me. I glanced over. So did he. It was Toby. He nodded and gave me a small smile. Did I tell him that I saw Alyssa knock his lights out or no?
“You have a ride home tonight?” he asked me as we walked out of the elevator.
“What? Oh yeah of course. I was gonna get a cab or take the subway or something. No big deal.”
“Oh no, do not take the subway under any circumstances. If you need cab fare, I can give you some.” Sure, the subway was gross but what did he think took place in there? I didn’t need any cab fare, but it was nice of him to offer. He seemed like a nice man; all things considered. In our limited interaction, he was definitely polite and cordial, I could say that for certain. With women, things looked a little weird but otherwise…
I had two eyes however and both of them worked exceptionally well. What I did not know about his personality, I knew about his looks. Toby was the kind of good looking that was not supposed to be seen in the tech world in which he worked. The company he had co-founded with Easton, Missy’s fiancé, produced drones, and he looked absolutely nothing like the kind of nerd who sat down for hours on end doing that kind of work.
He was tall, and through the suit he was wearing, I could tell had a solid, built physique. His hair, cut short was almost black, and his eyes too were like dark coffee. He had a handsome face and a nose that was a tiny little bit crooked but in a way that made him look rugged. His jaw had a sprinkling of ten-day scruff and was the sort of chiseled that got people jobs as models. He was quite good at dressing as well. Adding his net worth to the deal, no wonder so many women wanted a piece.
I wanted a piece.
I swear to God, I hadn’t thought of Toby in that way until just now. It had been a long, very long time since a man who was not a medical professional had touched me. Toby just upstairs had made it very clear that all he wanted was a roll in the hay, no expectations, no disappointments, and his date had declined the offer.
I was willing to take it if it was still on the table. I mean, what did I really have to lose? If he said no, I could have a lovely night alone with my battery-operated boyfriend just like any other night. If he said yes then tonight, I wouldn’t be doing all the work.
“Let me hail you a cab,” he said once we were outside. I wrapped my jacket a little tighter around me against the brisk wind. I looked at him and spurred on by liquid courage from all the wine Easton and Missy had fed us tonight, I propositioned him.
“What happened to that date of yours?”
“Who? Oh, she decided to leave early.”
“Is that really what happened?” I asked him. He stopped trying to hail me a cab and turned to look at me.
“Did she tell you something different?”
“Didn’t have to. I overheard the conversation the two of you had on the terrace.”
“Well, if you already knew what happened, then why did you ask?”
“Because you offered her a night of hot, no strings attached sex, and she declined. That sure is some coincidence, because I’m offering the same thing. Do I have any takers?”
He laughed and he took a little step back, running his hand through his hair. Maybe he wasn’t used to women propositioning him so boldly, but tonight was not a night for feigned modesty.
“What’s so funny?” I asked him.
“Nothing. I just didn’t realize you had those feelings for me.”
“Oh no, no feelings. I’m horny and last I heard, so were you. Just in and out, no strings attached sex. That was what you were offering right? Well, that’s what I’m offering.” He chuckled and ran a hand over his face. If I was sober, I would have over-analyzed that gesture and completely chickened out of my proposal but at the moment, I didn’t care. I wanted what I wanted from him, but if he ended up declining it, oh well.
“Are you sure?” He said to me. His face looked a little different. Even in the dark, I could make out the intensity of his eyes as he looked at me. I had him.
“Get us a cab and I’ll show you just how sure I am.” He got his phone out.
“No need, I have a lim
o.” I actually laughed out loud. Of course, he had a limo. Of course, he was the kind of man that drove around New York City in a limousine. God, rich people were so corny sometimes. We were only outside for a few more minutes, standing so close to each other that the sexual tension fizzled between us. The limo pulled up, and he opened the door for me, letting me in first.
The inside of the car looked like some landlords charged twelve hundred in rent for in the city. Before we were even moving, his hands were on me. His hands cupped my face and he pressed me back into the seat with his body, kissing me.
Was making out always this hot? Maybe it was just me. I could swear that a lack of sex made you lose your mind a little bit. That was why I had propositioned Toby tonight in the way that I had. Once I got a little bit of dick tonight, I would be clear-minded and calm. All he had done so for was kiss me, but I could feel myself getting wet. Tonight, was going to be worth it, it was going to be so worth it.
“Lie down.”
“What?” I was a little delirious from the kiss. Instead of waiting for me to do it, Toby yanked me towards him so I collapsed back onto the seat with my legs up. He got between them and started pulling off my underwear. I started laughing out of excitement and arousal. A large part of me was still in disbelief that this was happening. We made eye contact through my open legs.
