Three Cakes
Page 3
I fell asleep, wishing I’d had a slice of caramel pie at the restaurant. At least then I would have had something sweet to eat that night. I felt like I’d barely drifted off when I heard and felt Clay waking me up. He was calling my name and gently shaking me out of the shallow sleep I’d fallen into.
“What?” I said, opening my eyes. “What’s wrong?”
“Nothing’s wrong,” Clay said. “It’s almost midnight and I just wanted to wish you a happy birthday before your birthday is over.”
“Okay.”
“I have a gift for you,” he said, rising from the bed. He left the room and returned with a box…a cake box.
“Happy birthday, baby,” he said before handing me the box.
I looked inside and there, in all its glory, was a confetti birthday cake. “Thank you,” I said. I set the cake on the night stand beside the bed and pulled Clay to me for a kiss.
“I had to hide it in the top of the coat closet behind a bunch of hats and scarves,” he confessed.
“I knew you’d made a cake.”
“Of course I made a cake.”
“Why did you make me wait for it?”
“Because I wanted to surprise you. Plus, I told you when we first met that I can be incredibly juvenile sometimes.” He rose from the bed and asked if I wanted a piece of cake now since we had about fifteen minutes before my birthday was over.
“No,” I said, pulling him back to the bed. “The cake can wait. All I want is you.”
