Professor X

"I know..." His lips curved into a smile against my skin. "What kinda cake did you end up bakin'?"
"Kyla's favorite," I told him. "She and Cheddar flipped a coin on who would get what when it came to dessert. The only downside was that whoever lost tonight was going to win for the wedding and she hates carrot cake."
"They got another nine more months to change their minds on that shit, yeah?" he said. "Cheddar's become such a goddamn pussy when it comes to her lately that all she'll need to do is tell him she wants somethin' else and the carrot cake'll be scrapped."
"He's a pussy?" I turned to face him and threw my arms around his neck. "That sounds like projection, X."
"Not even goddamn close." He laughed to himself and wagged his head. "I'd do alot for you, darlin', but--"
"You would do anything for me, Xavier -- anything. Don't pretend now that you wouldn't, that you haven't already." I closed my eyes and leaned into his face, then whimpered as he pressed his lips against mine and rolled his tongue in search of my own. I clawed at his neck and back before moving my hands into his hair and shoved my breasts into his chest as his hands dipped below my waist. "Is this okay for you now?"
He nodded while pushing me into the wall near the door and crawling his fingers beneath my shirt. "I'm almost healed up from that shit, baby -- I'm good. You know that by now."
I leaned away from him and tilted my head to catch my breath. "I know about your stomach," I said. "You've proven that to me almost every night since being back home. I meant okay for you as far as being back here tonight. With the tapes and Flex still missing--"
"Prez is still lookin' into that shit, remember? He's got Tech still tryin' to track his ass down -- even got LapDog usin' some of his boys to help."
I nodded and exhaled. "And LapDog and Boone are the only two that still know the truth -- nobody slipped and said anything to anyone else?"
"We're still good out here, baby."
"Until or unless Flex comes back without warning to throw you under the bus, Xavier. You said yourself that he was almost venomous as he spoke to you about the both of us. I don't even know what the hell he has always had against me outside of the obvious."
"That asshole has always been a racist prick, but this shit with him sounded like more than that."
"And that's what keeps me afraid at night, X. I love you and I know that you'll keep me safe, but I can't help sleeping with one eye open when you're not there."
"Least you're knowin' better and stayin' put this time." He wrapped his hands around my face and kissed me again. "I ain't ever gonna let that motherfucker get close to you or my goddamn club again, yeah? We all got each other's backs out here even more than before. Even got Trac to stop bein' so much of an asshole when his dick ain't bein' damn near sucked off." I shut my eyes and winced at the visual. "I'm gonna give you a goddamn beautiful as hell life, baby. Everything you ever wanted to have from it and more."
"I have everything I've always needed, Xavier. You being the start and finish of it all." He pulled me into another kiss, so much deeper than before and removed his hands from my face, dropping them to my breasts. I moaned. "My cake is going to burn," I told him.
"Let Cheddar bake his own goddamn cake for his woman," he mumbled between my lips.
I laughed and kissed him deeper until the door opened and Coco leaned inside. "Jesus, if I wanted keep walkin' in on this kinda shit, we'd still have the porn business out here."
I rolled my eyes into my head and cleared my throat. "What do you want?" I snapped.
"The goddamn cake. Done yet?"
"It should be," I returned. "You're free to check and take it out there at anytime."
"Think I might do that shit since everybody else in here got their goddamn hands full."
Xavier chuckled. "Scooter's ass show up out there yet?"
"Nope." Coco slipped a pair of mittens onto his hands and reached into the oven for the cake, placing it on top of the counter and allowing it to cool. "Prez thinks despite all the shit about him bein' on his way that he ain't comin'."
"Christ." He spun away from me to turn off the oven, and sighed. "It is not a good fuckin' time for this prick to start checkin' his ass out again."
"I know, brother, but what the fuck else can we do at this point? Between mopin' over lyin' pussy and gettin' himself demoted 'cause of it, maybe it's best that his ass is stayin' the fuck away for now."
"I'd be with you on this if we were only two weeks into this shit instead of a whole ass, goddamn month."
"Okay." I stepped between them and pointed at the door. "Why don't we deal with this later, because for at least five minutes, Cheddar and Kyla deserve to enjoy some of their engagement party."
Coco bobbed his head. "You're right on this shit, darlin'. Sorry. The Scooter shit continues to get my ass worked up, but hey, somethin' good came outta all this with you bein' back in with us and Cheddar finally meetin' his goddamn match in pussy."
Xavier laughed. "Of all the motherfuckers out here, he was the last I ever expected to drop down to one knee and pop the goddamn question with an actual ring that he went out and paid for."
"Accordin' to her, he popped that shit in goddamn bed like a fuckin' cherry."
I winced again and wrapped a pair of towels around the bottom of the cake pan, lifting it from the counter and bolting from the kitchen, returning to a small crowd at the front of the club. With X and Coco on my heels, I placed the pan on top of the bar and helped the girls refill cups of wine and beer.
As music slowed from the juke box, Cheddar and Kyla got up from the corner couch and made their way to the bar, arms entangled with one another as their eyes remained focused on the cake.
"Goddamn." Cheddar's face lit up like a tree on Christmas morning. "Forgot how good of a cook your ass can be when it's out here givin' an actual fuck, darlin'."
"Thank you, but it can be very, very good when I'm making something for someone I actually like. This time it happens to be your fiancée and not you."
"What about when it comes to my goddamn cake for the weddin'?"
"I'm sure if you pay some dimwit enough, they'll be willing and able."
His head fell back as he barked with laughter. "Jesus, you ain't ever gonna fuckin' change."
"I wouldn't like that shit if she ever did, brother." X took a seat and pulled me into his lap. "Don't you two wanna start talkin' or somethin' -- make some kinda goddamn speech 'bout all this shit?"
"In a bit," he said as Big Tech, Rugger, Sniper, Boone and the remaining brothers from the Blue Devils Mother Charter gathered around them. "Right now, I just wanna be around my main motherfuckers, you know? Be thankful we still got everybody here and whole despite the shit that went down last month." His eyes lowered to his left hand; to the splints holding his fingers together and the cast keeping the bones in his arm in place. "I'm just thankful as fuck to still be part all this shit; thankful I got somethin' that I ain't ever gonna lose or take advantage of."
Kyla stood in front of him and smiled. "I'm going to make sure of that, always," she said.
"Yeah, babe, I know the fuck you will."
We laughed and reached for cups before holding them above our heads.
"To family," said Xavier. "Ain't nobody ever gonna be able to tear this shit apart no matter how goddamn hard they try."
"To fuckin' family." Tractor nodded as he eyed each of us from behind the bar. "Through thick and motherfuckin' thin."
A wave of hoots and hollers were followed up with excess cheering around the club. As the brothers finished their alcohol and mocked Cheddar pulling Kyla into a kiss that nearly made her faint, Xavier slid his arm across my shoulders and leaned into my ear.
"You wantin' that for us someday?"
I nodded. "On our own terms."
"Yeah, baby, me too."
I turned as he leaned against he bar and rested my hand on top of his chest. "Tell me that we're going to be okay, Xavier. That once the last bit of dust settles, no matter
what happens, we're always going to be good to each other -- be good with each other."
"I promise you that, darlin' -- always. Everything else might leave me with questions, but ain't nothin' breakin' this shit up again. We're stayin' put from now, baby 'til the goddamn end."
I bent forward to kiss him because I loved him.
Because I believed in him and knew that if I didn't, I would lose the part of my soul that had become entwined with his own.
I wasn't willing to lose it as much as I wasn't willing to lose him again.
Therefore, he was right. We were staying put.
We would be good to each other and with each other from now until the goddamn end.
It was a promise he had planned to keep.
A promise I was certain above all others that he always, always would.
