Zero Dwarfs Given (Dwarf Bounty Hunter Book 4)

Right at the moment, the sweet pittie Leela is staring at me hoping for a treat. I’m doing my best not to look in her direction. The good dog Lois Lane is at the front window hoping for a dog or a car to go by so she has a reason to start barking again. The usual routine.

Best I can do right now is try and imagine what I hope the new year looks like, which is pretty fitting for the end of 2020 and the beginning of a whole new world. So much this year was put on hold or closed forever or split apart or even came together. New ideas turned out better than they should have while others that should have lasted years just couldn’t make it.

What I envision for myself is getting rid of all the ‘shoulds.’ Stick with me on this one. It’s a great plan.

First one is finally knowing what kind of things I like to do that I see as fun as opposed to the dreaded ‘exercise’. I’ve been working on this one for a good part of the year and weirdly, I’m making progress. With the help of my trainer, Laura we’ve been coming up with a list of things I find fun to do. Kayaking, yoga, walking in nature, boxing, swimming. And getting rid of anything I see as one more thing to check off that I’m supposed to be doing. Pilates, running, weightlifting. My goal is to get back to that kid who ran through the backyards of all my neighbors to get to my best friend, Paula’s house at the end of the block. Decades later I still remember how much I loved running toward an adventure. Or rode my very heavy bike with no speeds, up and down the hills of my neighborhood. It never occurred to me to think about how much good it was doing me. It was just fun.

When did it stop being fun and becoming something I should be doing?

I suppose it doesn’t matter when it happened and it’s more important to just fix it.

Other should are that I should be able to wear everything in my closet. I’ve wrestled with this bad boy for a while and won some of the internal arguments and lost others. Each time, though I get rid of more and recognize that whoever I am today will do just fine, thank you.

Or should be meditating more, or should be working less.

Enough with the shoulds. This new year will be about the possibilities of things I really want to be doing. Game nights at my place, hanging out in that new garden, hearing live music again in a sweaty crowd, hiking and swimming, and sitting in small restaurants laughing with friends. Reading good books out in that garden (A lot of these will end with ‘out in that garden’) That’s it. Maybe some of my new dreams will take time to build, but I’m setting out on that road and seeing where it takes me. More adventures to follow.

2020 was like being captured in Jello. The year seemed to be moving but really it was just a lot of jiggling.

Thank you for reading through this book and to our author notes in the back.

  TRAEGER.

What is it you ask? Is it a new badass good guy, maybe a new enemy to sharpen the neighborhood (if you live in the Florida Everglades) bounty hunter?

  No, it’s a BBQ pit.

Specifically, it’s a wood pellet bbq pit first created (I’m reading) like a bajillion years ago, and I didn’t know much about it. In fact, at least two years ago my dad spoke about a cheap one he was using.

All I could think of was ‘why would you put chunks of wood in a pit and call it awesome? Much less pellets? Aren’t they a PAIN to deal with all of the time?’

In short, I had my head up my a$$.

I want one. In fact, I think I’m fantasizing about amazing bbq I could cook on one and how cool it would be to just cut open the top and pour in twenty amazing pounds of high-quality smoking wood that has been highly pressed together, delivering amazing heat with little ash.

In short, I am a sucker for the advertising on these bbq pits and therein lies the problem with having the mind of an author. I will, given the time and opportunity, create a story wherein I do amazing superhero stuff that no normal American male can accomplish.

  Like cooking amazing Texas-style brisket.

Some people imagine scoring a winning touch-down. Some others (in my age bracket) believe shooting a low score at a famous golf course would be the highlight of their later years. I just want to do one brisket that is so melt-in-your-mouth delicious I can call it meat-butter.

I think maybe this pit could do the trick. But there are two problems. First, my wife needs to be onboard and second, I have many different brands to choose from. Because let’s face it, if I go TRAEGER, I go for the big bucks.

Is there any other way to go? I don’t know… No one I know personally has one of these amazing sounding bbq smokers except my dad.

I’m not sure if I dare ask him. If I do, will I get the answers I’m looking for or another story that I’ve heard about eight times?

It’s a gamble… but I want that amazing brisket sticker.

Damn it… I gotta go call my dad, now.
