Fortune Reigns

What the Priestess couldn’t see was the smile on the Legionary’s face or hear him humming the dirge.

She peeled back the leather to find three mini bars of gold. By the time she looked up, the Legionary was gone.

  The End

  Note from J. Clifton Slater

Thank you for reading Clay Warrior Stories. Fortune Reigns is the 6th book in the series. During Alerio’s journey, I have written 18 songs or chants. Each was designed to explore and represent segments of life in the mid Republic era. From dirges and tavern songs, to rowing and military chants, the verses tell tales of things people in that period took as everyday occurrences.

Some readers have said they enjoy the songs and chants. Others read through them quickly so they could get on with the main story. And, a few have chastised me for bad poetry. I thank you all for letting me know your thoughts. Please remember, Alerio likes to sing while he fights.

A few readers have commented on the amount of research I do for these books and how true they are to the times. Hopefully, the research is buried in the narrative. These are adventure books first and historical fiction second. But, I do value the recognition of my efforts.

If you have comments please do not hesitate to e-mail me. Thank you for making Clay Warrior Stories a successful series. Are my readers the best? Ita Vero!

  Sincerely,

  J. Clifton Slater
