I looked at that message for a full thirty minutes before responding.

Daughter-in-law: I love him.
I look down at the text on my phone and smile as Josh comes up to me smiling. Putting my phone away, I give him a hug
“I’m happy for you son,” I tell him patting his shoulder as he makes the proposal to Amber.
Daughter-in-law: He’ll be looking for a PA… I think I know the perfect woman for the job.
Daughter-in-law: Thank you for everything!
I down my champagne and prayed for my son’s happiness. Today marked the beginning where he’d have to make a choice between fake happiness or true happiness. I prayed that he’d make that right choice and choose Layla, as this was his last chance at happiness. If not, he’d end up just like me.
“John you coming? The happy couple is saying goodbye.” Rolling my eyes, a habit I picked up from Layla, I look at my empty champagne flute. God, I hate her voice.
“Yeah, I’ll be right there.” When she left I sighed. It’s time. I can finally move on. I can finally be happy. I walk into the house to tell my son goodbye, completely ignoring the squawking ducks next to me.
“You okay dad?”
“Yup. Just thinking.” He nods and I look away. “Hey Josh.”
“Yea dad?”
“Make the right choice okay?” The confusing look on his face told me he thought I was drunk. He’ll probably forget this whole conversation with all the excitement and everything, but I wouldn’t. It’s time for us to be happy. It’s time for us to get some closure and be the best men for the women who truly deserved us. I know it’ll take some time but no matter what, I’d make things work out. I will keep my promise.
