Potion Sickness

“This is a wholesome competition!” shouted another. Gloria scowled at everyone as she was led away by Jack, and I turned to Willow.
“Well, that was certainly something.”
“That it was,” she replied. “I wasn’t expecting Gloria to go on such a rampage.”
“You didn’t see her at The Magic Brewmstick the other day,” I laughed. “There was a lot of pent-up anger in that witch.”
“Evidently.”
The wizard hosting the event took to the microphone one more. “Now, without any further ado, I’d like to declare the winner of this year’s competition. In first place, for the eighth year in a row, Rosie Everwood.”
I cheered like a banshee as Grandma Rosie made her way to the front and got her prize ribbon, before hoisting it triumphantly above her.
“Now, the bakers have all made extra pies that will be available to sample,” the wizard said, waving his wand. Suddenly, tables laden with small pieces of all the pies appeared, and a hum of appreciation rose from the crowd. This was what a lot of the people here had come for.
Willow and I pushed our way through the crowd until we reached Grandma Rosie, who beamed at us as she happily pinned the blue ribbon to her shirt.
“I told you I would win,” she announced happily. “And I got to see Gloria embarrassed in front of everyone, so all in all it was a good day.”
“Did you make the spell that exploded her cake?” I asked, and Grandma Rosie nodded.
“I did, but she did deserve it. I cast a spell that would detect any potions used to cheat. That way, if at the last minute Gloria had a change of heart and just baked a pie without any of Livinia’s potion in it, nothing would have happened. The competition would have gone on as normal, as it should have if she didn’t cheat. But, she didn’t have that change of heart, so, well, you saw the results.”
“She’s mad,” I said. “She’s going to come after you.”
“I’d like to see her try,” Grandma Rosie said with a grin, whipping out her wand and spinning it around her fingers with a dexterity that surprised me. “I won this round, fair and square. And now I’ve won the pie contest more times in a row than any other witch. Between this and the fact that you found Luca’s killer, I have to say, it’s been a pretty good week for the Everwood family.”
Yes, that it definitely had.
