  ‘We will burn him!’

Torsten ignored the dragon. ‘Why have you come back, Varlot?’ He kept his voice neutral.

‘You’ve done some terrible things, Torsten. So have I. I’m done grinding this axe. I want to come back and serve my queen.’

Torsten laughed at the absurdity of the comment. ‘Serve the queen? Varlot, when have you ever served anyone other than yourself?’

‘Could say the same for you.’

‘They won’t let you back. You murdered your own wife and child in a drunken rage. Surayo will never allow you back in her ranks.’

Varlot’s lip curled at Torsten’s words. ‘And what will Surayo do when she finds out you paralysed her cousin? You torture prisoners to death and claim they were ill. How do you think she’ll react once she learns you’ve gone too far with the small amount of power you’ve been given?’

It was Torsten’s turn to bristle.

Varlot continued, ‘Remember the lad in the tavern from Ballowtown? He’s the linchpin in everything that’s happening with the Myr, I’m sure of it.’

‘Yes, I met Fenn recently.’ Torsten held up his right hand, the flesh burned from Fenn’s fire.

‘If we work together and stop him, we could claim victory over the Myr. Think of the glory! The gold!’

‘And what do you want for that?’

‘Let me come back, that’s all I ask. Not as a soldier. I’m done being on the front lines.’

  ‘What, then?’

  ‘An Inquisitor.’

Miroth’s fire flared. ‘You don’t need him, brother! We can kill the Myr-touched one!’

Torsten couldn’t ignore the fact he wanted Fenn dead as much as he wanted Apollo dead. If Varlot had knowledge on how to get to Fenn, it would be a start.

Ignoring his spirit’s objections, Torsten raised his unburnt hand to shake Varlot’s. ‘Fine. Lead me to Fenn and I’ll consider your request.’
