Marked For You: The X-Perience Series Page 13

by C. G Miller

I had thought stuffing my mouth, she would forget her question and let me be. Taking a big swallow, I almost choked.

My mother looked at me with intensity, “Finished.” I just nodded at her.

“Your father and I have been thinking. College is coming up fast. Which school did you decide on?”

Looking over at my Dad, his fork now rested on his plate as he watched me closely.

My nerves began to shake as the scared feeling took over. I didn’t want to hurt them. I loved them. But, college was not a part of my plan. I could see in their faces they knew. The look of disappointment was there as they waited for my answer.

I was slow with hesitation as I spoke, “Mom.”

“Stop right there.” She held her hand up shaking her head. “You are going right? Please tell me, all those unfinished college applications were in the trash because you have already chosen a school?”

“Mom.” Tears now formed in my eyes as I saw the disappointment. My father was stone face as if not hearing anything.

“Do you realize how hard your father has worked to make sure you have a future? Do you?” Her voice was getting violent. I had never heard my mother be so mad or maybe it was sad. I found it hard to tell.

Tears slowly fell down my cheek. I should feel empowered to make my own decisions, but the disappointment from them made me question everything. Never had they looked at me like this. It was overwhelming as I whispered, “I’m not going.”

“Mack,” she said stunned, “Talk some sense into your daughter. Explain how hard you have worked.” My mother was always in control and when she couldn’t be, she would use my dad to cement her control.

He let out a huff still blank faced as he walked away from the table.

“Mack.” My mother called after him but, he ignored her. Thinking my mom’s disappointment would ruin me, I never realized how much it would affect my dad. The one man in my life that loved me for me. I wasn’t sure if our relationship would withstand the disappointment I presented to them.
