You were safe with Adrian, he thought. And you had to go running off.

His phone buzzed his pocket, and he took it out—it was Adrian.

“Yo,” said Hunter, sitting down on the roof and leaning back against the wall.

  “What have you learned?”

“Worst-case shit,” he said. “The girl’s got herself mixed up with that fucker Brandt.”

“Damn!” the word came out in a hiss. “Of all the fucking dragons in this town she could be working with...”

“I’m across from her apartment right now,” said Hunter. “How you want to play this?”

“Nothing rash,” said Adrian. “Jack’s on his way over now and we’re going to discuss the matter. Come join us, and we’ll figure out our next step.”

“Are you serious?” asked Hunter. “A, I told you I’m right across from her place. You want me to go in there and grab her, I can have her at the apartment in an hour.”

“What did I say about doing anything rash? You seriously think it’d be a good idea to barge into her apartment, kidnap her, and bring her back in broad daylight? I swear, you’ve been spending too much time with the bears—making you lose your sense of subtlety. If you ever had one.”

Hunter grinned, knowing Adrian was both screwing around and probably right. “All right. I’ll be there in thirty. We’ll get this shit figured out.”

  “Good. Sounds like a plan.”

Hunter jammed his phone back into his pocket and took one last look at the apartment. Sure, he knew it wasn’t the best idea. But they needed to keep her away from Brandt. Hunter knew what kind of man he was, and what he’d have in mind for an omega like Sarah.

Better get this sorted out sooner than later, he thought. Only gonna get more complicated.

He grunted as he got up. Hunter took the fire escape down to the street and made his way over to his motorcycle. Seconds later, the engine was revved up and he was on his way back to Manhattan.

Be a hell of a lot easier if I could just fucking shift and fly over there. But no—we can’t scare the humans.

He crossed the Williamsburg Bridge, the skyline spreading out in front of him. A short drive through Manhattan later and he was in front of Adrian’s apartment building. He parked and took the elevator up.

Adrian was seated on the couch, a glass of red wine in his hand. Jack was there too, his arms crossed over his chest as his green eyes flicked over to Hunter.

“There you are,” said Jack. “Been waiting for you to show up.”

“Bike’s fast,” said Hunter as he made his way to the bar and grabbed a beer. “Flying’s faster.”

“You want to have the entire city on our ass?” asked Jack. “Because that’s what’ll happen if any of the humans see you shift.”

“Whatever,” said Hunter as he dropped onto the couch and took a long swig of his beer. “I know the damn rules. I just want to know what the hell we’re gonna do about this omega.”

“It’s what we’ve been discussing,” said Adrian. “It’s a delicate matter, as I’m sure you can guess.”

“I don’t do ‘delicate matters,’” said Hunter. “You want something or someone fucked up, I’m your man. Not really into the sneaking around shit.”

Adrian chuckled. “I know, brother. But with what’s at stake with this situation, I would hope you’d be able to put your baser instincts aside.”

  “An omega,” said Jack.

“That’s right,” said Adrian. “I managed to get her back here last night. Had to fight off some wolves to do it.”

“Fucking wolves,” said Hunter. “Always sticking their snouts where they don’t belong.”

“You took care of them?” asked Jack. “That might have some consequences.”

“Possibly,” said Adrian. “But there wasn’t a chance in hell I’d let them get their hands on her.”

“Damn decent of you,” said Hunter. “So you were able to get her back to the apartment. And then she snuck out from under you.”

Adrian winced, clearly not happy at what had happened. “That’s right. I was hoping I could reason with her and get Sarah to understand the circumstances she was in. I didn’t want to force her to be here against her will.”

“It’s what you should’ve done,” said Hunter, leaning forward. “She needed to be here with us whether she liked it or not.”

“What’s done is done,” said Jack. “No sense in getting upset over it.”

Hunter waved his hand dismissively through the air. He wasn’t happy at all that they’d had the omega and let her sneak off.

“Then what’s the plan now?” asked Hunter. “We hope she sees reason and comes back to us like a stray pup?”

“Pretty sure the time for that’s passed,” said Jack. “We’re going to need to do something drastic.”

“That’s right,” said Adrian. “If she’s working with the mafia, working with Brandt, she’s going to get more sucked into his world by the day.”

Jack nodded. “And no doubt he spun her some bullshit about doing jobs for him. Girl’s got no idea what Brandt’s really got in mind for her.”

“All right,” said Hunter. “Then we’re finally in fucking agreement that we can’t stand around and wait for shit to happen. We’ve got to do something.”

“We’re going to do something,” said Adrian. “And we’re going to do it tonight.”

  “Let’s hear it,” said Hunter.

“We need to keep tailing her,” said Jack. “Make sure she doesn’t get in any trouble.”

Hunter laughed. “Fuck, probably too late for that. If she’s doing favors for Brandt, the girl’s already in over her head.”

Adrian said nothing, and Hunter could tell he was right. He sat back and weaved his fingers together, his expression making it clear he was deep in thought.

“All right, brainiac,” said Hunter. “You got something on your mind; let’s hear it. Because my plan’s to kick down the fucking doors of Brandt’s tower, take the girl, and end this shit once and for all.”

“You would say something like that,” said Jack. “Maybe we can meet with her again, try to talk some sense into her.”

“No,” said Adrian. “She had her chance last night. I explained the situation as best I could, and she still thought she could run from it.”

“She’s gonna learn the hard way, then,” said Hunter.

“No,” said Jack. “Because the ‘hard way’ means she becomes property of Brandt. If he’s able to mate with an omega...”

“It’d be a disaster,” said Adrian. “They’d give birth to the most powerful dragon in the city. He’d be able to take over like he’s always wanted.”

“Now,” said Hunter, setting his beer down on the coffee table. “I may be a little rusty on all this shit, but doesn’t the omega have to, I dunno, have feelings or some shit for the alpha before she can have his kid?”

“Correct,” said Adrian. “Alpha, or in our case, alphas. She’d have to willingly give herself to Brandt for the process to work.”

“Then we’re fine for now,” said Hunter. “I don’t know the girl, but I seriously doubt she’d fall for a piece of shit like him.”

“Brandt’s persuasive,” said Jack. “He might not get her to fall for him, but he might be able to break her spirit.”

“Fucking hell,” said Hunter. “And I’m guessing that by ‘persuasive’ you mean he’d torture the shit over her until she said ‘yes.’”

  Jack nodded.

“We have to move,” said Adrian. “And we have to move tonight. But we have to play it smart.” He turned to Hunter. “We’re going to tail her again, find out when she’s going to Brandt’s tonight. No doubt he’s going to send her on some kind of mission, test her out.”

“That’s when we get her,” said Jack.

  “Hell yeah,” said Hunter.

He didn’t need to hear another word. Hunter was a man of action. And he was ready to get moving.

  CHAPTER 9

  SARAH

“Thank you so much for doing this,” said Kelly. “I...don’t even know what to say.”

Sarah felt the same way. After all, she was about to be doing work for the mafia. When she’d come to New York, it was the exact sort of thing she’d wanted to get away from.

“Just tell me that when this is all over, you’ll stay as far away from these creeps as possible. I don’t care how much money or power or whatever else they have; it’s not worth it.”

“I get it,” said Kelly. “And I hate that I have to drag you into this.”

“I know. But we’ll get this taken care of.”

Before either of them could say another word, Sarah’s phone vibrated in her pocket. She slipped it out and saw that it was a message from Brandt.

“Your ride’s here. See you soon, gorgeous.”

The message sent another chill up her spine. She stepped towards the apartment window and looked out. Sure enough, the same car as earlier in the day was parked out in front, its color as black as the night sky above.

“I need to get moving,” said Sarah. “Brandt clearly isn’t the kind of guy you want to keep waiting.”

“You’re right about that,” said Kelly.

She got up from the table and hugged Sarah.

I can’t believe I’m doing this to my best friend. What the hell did I get myself into? Kelly’s thoughts were clear in Sarah’s mind, and it gave her some comfort to know that her friend wasn’t taking the situation lightly.

“OK,” said Sarah. “I need to get moving.”

  “Good luck,” said Kelly.

One more hug and Sarah was off. Moments later, she was in the back of the car, but Brandt wasn’t there waiting for her. The driver took off without saying a word, the car making its way to Manhattan. The city was alive with Friday night electricity, and Sarah wished she was doing anything but meeting with the mafia.

Fifteen minutes later, they reached a skyscraper that struck her as similar to Adrian’s.

Damn, are all these guys loaded as hell? She put the thought out of her head, knowing she had much more important matters to worry about.

The driver parked in front of the building. Two hulking men in black suits were waiting for them. Sarah stepped out of the car and they locked their dark eyes onto her.

“Come with us,” said the man on the right. “The boss is waiting for you.”

Sarah nodded. The two men formed up at her side, making her feel like a prisoner being escorted to jail. They entered the luxurious lobby of the building and took a private elevator up to the top floor. The doors soon opened, revealing a stunning apartment. Adrian’s had been all modern and sleek, but Brandt’s looked like something out of another time, all wood and books and marble.

Brandt was seated near a window overlooking the city, his eyes fixing onto her, that same sly smile forming on his lips. In his hand was a large glass of some kind of dark liquor.

“There you are,” he said. “I’ve been waiting for you. Come, have a seat.” He nodded to the two men, who stepped back into the elevator and left the apartment.

“Tell me what you want from me,” said Sarah, not moving an inch.

Brandt chuckled. “Straight and to the point. Good. That’ll make this easier. But have a seat—I insist.”

Knowing she didn’t have any other option, Sarah stepped into the apartment, her footsteps echoing through the space. She chose a spot on the couch across from Brandt, wanting to keep as much distance as possible between the two of them. Brandt appeared to notice, and let the smile stay on his face.

“All right,” said Sarah. “What’s the job?”

“It’s simple, really. You’re going to travel to the Upper East Side and deliver a package.”

  “What’s in it?”

Another grin. “Maybe it’s been a while since you’ve been in the game, but surely you know not to ask questions like that.”

“Fine,” said Sarah. “Who am I delivering it to?”

“You’re going to deliver it to an...associate of mine. His name’s Charles May. It should be a simple job. Go up there, drop it off, and come back.”

“And that’s it?” Sarah’s sense of danger tingled through her body. She had a feeling that the job likely wasn’t as simple as it sounded.

“That’s it. Consider this a test of how much I can rely on you. And keep in mind I asked your friend to do something similar, and she didn’t exactly meet with success.”

Sarah hated the way he talked about Kelly, like she was some worthless, low-level employee that he didn’t give a shit about.

“So I drop the package off and come back here.”

“You’re a fast learner.” He rose, stepping over to a shelf where he removed an ornate box fixed with a golden lock. “You won’t be able to get into this, so you don’t need to worry about your curiosity getting the better of you.”

He gestured for Sarah to come over to him. Once she was close, he handed her the box. It was surprisingly light.

“The address is four-five-one East Fifty-Second. Simply speak to the doorman, and he’ll help you with the rest.”

She tucked the box under her arm. “And how many of these ‘jobs’ am I going to be doing for you?”

“As many as it takes for me to be satisfied. Your friend ran up quite a debt with her screw-up, and it’s going to take some time for it to be paid off. So, if you want to see her safe, you’ll do as I ask until I decide you’ve proven your worth.”

  “And I’m walking?”

“No, you’ll be taking one of my cars. My driver will be outside waiting for you. Unless you have any other questions, I suggest you get to it. I’m eager to hear of your success.”

He placed his hand on Sarah’s arm, and the moment his skin touched hers, she wanted it off. Sarah pulled her arm away, her reaction causing a brief flash of anger to appear on Brandt’s face.

“You’re going to need to be a better sport than that,” he said. “I’m your new boss, after all. And maybe even more than that, in time.”

He flashed her another grin, and however much Sarah had wanted to leave before, now the feeling was only more intense. Sarah quickly departed, wanting to be as far away from Brandt as possible. She tucked the package under her arm, the thing almost feeling hot to the touch.

Can’t believe I’m in this shit again, she thought as she made her way outside. I came to New York to get away from all of this. At least it’s just a simple delivery job. How hard could it be?

But she was quick to remember that Kelly had been given a simple delivery job and nearly lost her life in the process. Sarah scolded herself again and again for falling back into the life she’d sworn to leave behind for good.

Once outside, she spotted the car and driver waiting for her. Without saying a word, she stepped into the car, and they were soon off.

Kelly... she thought. How the hell did you get mixed up in all of this? Gotta get you out as fast as I can.

She pushed the matter out of her mind, but as soon as she did, another took its place. Kelly thought of Adrian, and the night she’d shared with him. As much as she didn’t want to admit it, the sex had been incredible.

It was as though he had intimate knowledge of her body, knew exactly what he needed to do to make her feel good. Seated in the back of the car, she felt liquid pool in her panties as she pictured Adrian on top of her pumping away, his cock tunneling into her over and over again.

Fucking hell! Last thing I need to be thinking about right now.

But the image kept returning. Without realizing she was doing it, Sarah’s hand moved up her thigh, coming to a rest between her legs. Even through the denim of her tight jeans, she could feel the heat from her pussy.

The better part of her wanted to get away from Adrian and Brandt and all the rest of the world she’d stumbled into as fast as she could. The other part of her, the more indulgent part, wanted to see Adrian again and again. Maybe even meet those brothers he’d been talking abo
ut.

Just focus on what needs to be done tonight. Don’t get distracted.

The car drove through the streets of Manhattan, the skyscrapers of Midtown giving way to the stately townhomes of the Upper East Side. Sarah wondered what sort of home she was going to be going to, what kind of person to whom she was making the delivery. Likely another member of Brandt’s mafia.

Then the car took a turn, one that brought them towards Central Park and away from the Upper East Side. Sarah didn’t know the city well, but she knew it well enough to know they were going in the wrong direction.

“Hey,” she said, leaning forward. “Where are we going?”

The driver kept on his course, the park soon visible in the distance. “Ah. Sorry—made a wrong turn. I’ll have you there soon, miss.”

Sure enough, he pulled the car around at the first chance he had and steered the car back in the direction of where they needed to go. Sarah was confused—how the hell had the driver not known the right way to go? He was a professional, and as far as she knew, Manhattan was a pretty easy-to-follow grid pattern.

Was he trying to buy time for some reason? Sarah put the idea out of her head like the rest, trying her best to focus on the job.

The driver made his way to the address, and a short time later, he came to a stop in front of a grand townhome of gray brick, a tall staircase bordered by columns leading up to a set of double doors.

“I’ll be waiting for you,” said the driver. He got out and opened the door for Sarah.

She took the package from the seat next to her and stepped out into the cool night air. Part of her wondered what was in the package that was so special. But she knew it didn’t matter. Whatever it was, it was most likely something illegal, something she’d be in major trouble for having on her. She knew the best thing would be to get it out of her hands as quickly as possible.

Sarah ascended the staircase and was soon in front of the double doors. An intercom was to her left, and she pressed the call button.

“Yes?” came a man’s voice from the speaker, low and deep.

“I’m with Brandt,” said Sarah. “I have something for you.”
