“What are you talking about?” she said as he handed her the paper.
“Open it,” he said, his eyes sparkling.
Emily tore her gaze from his to read:
The Husband Contract:
1) Cooper Merrick promises to forever deal with all rodent and pest control issues.
2) Cooper Merrick promises to love Emily Birmingham for the rest of their lives together.
3) Cooper Merrick promises to go in the basement and let Emily continue to pretend it doesn’t exist.
4) Cooper Merrick promises to continue baseball coaching until Emily hits a home run.
5) Cooper Merrick promises to always be there for Emily, to be her shoulder, her rock, and the man she can trust for the rest of her life.
The rest was blank. “Cooper,” she said softly, torn between kissing him and laughing.
“Is there anything you want to add?” he asked, taking her hand in his.
Emotion clogged her throat. “You’re catching me at a very emotional and sentimental moment. I’m racking my brain to add something to this list…but you…there is nothing more that I could ever want from you. You’ve given me everything,” she said, leaning forward and meeting him halfway when he kissed her.
“There is one more thing you need to know, though,” he said, pulling back, the worry in his voice making her nervous.
“What?” she whispered.
“I want you to have all your dreams. I think you’re amazing, and what you’re doing here for these women and kids is amazing, and I want to help in every way I can. I make good money, I can do repairs and whatever is needed to keep this place running, but I’m worried that you might think I have more than I actually do, and that I can offer a lot of financial help to keep this place running.”
Her mouth dropped open. “I think I have the answer to that.”
His jaw clenched, and he didn’t say anything. She handed him the cheque. The color drained from his normally tanned face. “You’re kidding me.”
She shook her head slowly.
“You’re about to change so many lives,” he said, his voice gruff and tender.
“We are. You are as much a part of this place as I am. I mean, now we know who to call for pest control, and the contract did stipulate for the rest of your life.”
He was grinning when he reached for her again. “The rest of our lives.”
