A current of energy coursed through the contact, going around from Rhyl to him, and then to Endora. Under his palm, Endora’s skin cooled, returning to its normal state.

“A Draekarra.” Aldric’s breathing was fast as he understood what the dragon wanted to say. “She shares the bond. Your vitalem will keep them both alive.”

The dragon grunted softly and Endora nestled her head on his chest, fast asleep now but no longer in the near-dead slumber of the coma.

“Is Maman going to be okay?” Tallie approached, eying Rhyl cautiously as she crept near.

Aldric turned to the child who looked so much like the woman he couldn’t live without. He felt a smile, true and wide, spread on his lips.

  “Yes, she will.”

  Epilogue

Endora pushed her eyelids open despite the fatigue that had settled in her bones, weighed down her body with a deep desire to sleep and never wake up. Finally the bedroom appeared, cast in low light and soft angles.

“You’re still here?” She turned to meet Aldric’s gaze. A faint smile pulled up the corners of his lips, but it didn’t erase the lines around his mouth and eyes.

In his arms, a small bundle covered in soft blankets made a small noise, akin to the cry of a kitten. Her heart surged with love at the sound. So alive.

“How are you feeling?” He pulled the chair he was sitting on closer.

“Tired.” She tried to sit up but her arms gave way. “How long did I sleep this time?”

“Twelve hours.” Aldric’s smile turned pained. In his arms, the small bundle started to move and fuss. “The doctors came earlier, but I told them to let you sleep.”

  “It’s a miracle I’m still here.”

“The doctors are baffled, I will not lie to you.” Aldric pushed her hair away from her forehead. There was so much raw possession, so much tenderness in the gesture, it was like a brand on her heart. “The only way to explain your resilience is the bond of a Draekarra.”

Endora nodded. Rhyl’s presence had been like a warm glow in the back of her skull, a whispering strength all throughout her pregnancy. Her body hadn’t depleted—even if she hadn’t eaten in weeks, the child growing inside her became stronger every day.

  All thanks to Rhyl.

She reached out, and Aldric pulled her up to a sitting position. She extended her arms, and the small bundle was placed across her chest. Softly, she pulled the folds of the blanket open and her gaze caught on a pair of silver eyes. She traced the cheek of the newborn baby boy, so soft, so full of life. The baby fussed, then began to cry in a loud demand for food.

  Endora chuckled.

“So fierce. So strong.” She bared her breast and the baby latched on greedily, sucking the nourishment with wet, hungry sounds. “Your son is a fighter.”

“That he is.” Aldric’s eyes glowed with pride and a love so strong it was barely contained. “Just like his mother.”

“I wish I could go to the lair and see Myral and the dragonet.” Endora smiled.

“I wouldn’t advise it.” Aldric lifted his brows and chuckled. “She’s quite the protective mother. No one except Rhyl and Dalgo has been there for a month. She won’t even tolerate my presence, no matter what Rhyl says.”

  “She’d let me come.”

Aldric’s stare turned serious. “Yes, she probably would. The dragonet is growing strong. Soon we will be able to let them sleep together, and then they will become even stronger.”

As if he had heard, the baby kicked the blanket, his small, chubby legs fighting against the restraints. She laughed, the sound making Aldric smile.

“So beautiful.” He reached out and patted the dark brown hair of the baby boy. “Such a gift you gave me.”

“This one will not be the last.” Endora slid her fingers over his. “More will come.”

Aldric lifted his gaze to her, his liquid silver eyes betraying the strength of his emotions. He swallowed, then shook his head. “I will not risk losing you again.”

“So you will make a vow of chastity?” she teased him.

“You know what I mean.” Aldric lifted her hand and gently bit the tip of her finger. “I will not be able to keep away from you, but there will be no more children. One is blessing plenty enough.”

Endora shook her head. She didn’t know how, but she knew. There would be more. Whispering Castle would be filled with laughter and the sound of running feet.

“I will not die. Not now, not then. Rhyl will keep me strong.” Aldric stared at her for a long time, his hand still holding hers, his breath caressing her sensitive fingertips.

“Do you want me to call the girls? They have been asking for you every day.” He lifted his eyebrows. “Every hour, of every day.”

“Yes.” Endora chuckled. She could easily imagine the girls pestering Aldric at every turn. “But first, I need to tell you something. I know what we should call him.”

When Aldric stayed silent, she smiled.

“We should name him Ylmir, after your sister.”

Emotions whirled and fanned across Aldric’s handsome features. He bent over her, and his kiss was hard and soft at the same time, a total possession that spanned both ways. When he finally pulled back, she was out of breath.

“How I love you,” he whispered against her lips.

In her arms, the tiny babe opened silver eyes, watching his parents with open trust.

  The End.
