But…it was a good kind of nervous because I was more nervous for how I was going to ask this woman to be my forever, and not nervous that she may say no.
I wanted my proposal to be perfect. The kind she would always remember.
She looked at me as I approached and the smile on her face was as radiant as the bright sunlight.
“I love it. All of it Devon,” she cooed, nodding her pretty head.
“Yeah?”
“Oh I do. How are we supposed to go back in two days?” She pretended to pout. “I’m like a fish, or a mermaid. I love the open sea and the beach. The way the sun sparkles on the surface of the water and it looks like diamonds. You know, like those screensavers.”
I laughed. “I know what you mean. What if…what if I told you this wasn’t just a getaway, and we had more than two days left here?”
Jeff gave us three weeks of vacation leave. It was for the hours we’d clocked in. She didn’t know that part though. She thought we had the long weekend break I’d sold her.
Her lips parted and she gave me a saucy grin. “Are we falling back into our old intern habits? I was thinking the same. We could tell Jeff we missed our flight and that could buy us an extra day, maybe two.”
“That sounds real good. But I think you’re going to like the plan I have up my sleeve.” I nodded firmly and loved the twinkle in her eyes.
“What plan is this, oh man of mine?” She giggled.
“What if I told you Jeff might have given us a three-week break, not just a few days?”
Her mouth fell open and surprise suffused her beautiful face.
“What!” She blinked several times. “What are you saying to me, Devon?”
“Surprise! We have three weeks together in paradise.” I spread my arms wide, motioning to the picturesque landscape that surrounded us.
Her hands flew up to her cheeks. “Oh my gosh!” She gasped and threw her arms around me, sliding on to my lap. “You little devil. How could you keep such a thing from me?”
“It’s a good surprise right?”
“It’s perfect.”
Now for the next part. The part that mattered.
The part I’d prepped for with Rory and Jeff, and talked with my parents about after dinner a few weeks back.
Todd was present at that dinner. We were at that stage. The road to get there had been a long one. A long hard one, but that was where we were. Dinner at our parents’ house, and if he texted me I’d text back. Baby steps to forgiveness.
Like everyone else, he was happy for me. I was happy for me, and I was happy to be at this stage with my girl.
“So, why would Jeff just give us such a long break?” Kelly asked, running her fingers over my chest.
“Well, being his godson does have its perks.”
“He told me that didn’t mean squat to him when it comes to work. Also, that his cat was more important.” She giggled again.
I laughed at that. “You are completely right. It doesn’t mean squat to him when it comes to work, but it does for other things. Special things. Special things like the plan I have for us.”
She smoothed her hand up to my jaw and ran her long delicate fingers across my beard.
“What plan Devon?”
“This.” I got up with her and we stood facing each other.
When I reached into my back pocket I could tell she thought I was going to pull out my lucky coin.
However, her face lit up and the blood rushed to her cheeks when I pulled out the little box that contained her engagement ring and held it before her.
She looked at me with those beautiful eyes and once again her hands graced her cheeks.
“Devon…is that what I think it is?” she asked. There was a quiver in her voice that I would have misunderstood for fear a few years back.
“Yes.” I snapped open the box and revealed the delicate-looking princess cut diamond ring I’d had made for her.
That part I got her father’s help with. I thought it would be a nice touch to include him to garner some element of her. Her friend Paige was a big part of her life too but her father gave me the finishing touches that made this all the more special.
I lowered to one knee and loved her even more than I already did when I saw for myself the love in her eyes.
It was always her eyes that told me how she felt. They were the first thing I looked to. The windows to her soul.
“Kelly, this is what I saw for us years ago. This was what I wanted for us. I wanted the future. A future with you. I saw us going on all sorts of crazy adventures and falling in love every day, just a little more. It’s us already. I want to spend the rest of forever with you. I love you to no end. There is no end to how much I love you. It just continues on and on like infinity, and I feel honored to be with you. Will you marry me?”
When she nodded my entire being rejoiced.
“Yes! I will. I will! My love for you has no end too, Devon. It’s me who feels honored to be with you. Thank you for being who you are.”
I beamed up at her, took out the ring from the box, and slipped it on her finger as she held her hand out for me to take.
The ring on her finger looked like it had always belonged there. Just like how she always felt like she belonged to me, and I’d belonged to her.
I’d loved her from hello because she always felt like mine.
Now she was.
