But to Clara, it was a clear call.

Raina looked around Mason’s spacious home with approval.
“Nice house, Mason. I have to admit, I never would have imagined you to have such a well-kept home.”
Mason retrieved two cups of coffee from the pot on the kitchen counter and laughed, unsure of how to respond.
“Uh—thanks. I think?”
“Well—you know what I mean. I just didn’t expect a single guy to be that into housekeeping.”
Mason set down a cup of coffee for each of them on the coffee table and took a seat on the couch next to Rain and chuckled. Not much else to do here but keep up with housekeeping!
“Because I’m a single guy, you’re surprised I don’t live like a complete slob. Well, if that’s not the most sexist thing that I have heard today.”
“All right, Mason, I guess you got me,” Raina said, throwing her hands up in mock disbelief. “I’m so sorry if my observations offended you.”
Mason watched her as she took a sip of her coffee and realized that this was one of the reasons that he liked Raina so much. She wasn’t someone who endlessly argued for their point of view, she always readily admitted her perceived wrongs, while attempting to find solutions for them.
And, of course, she had a hilarious sense of humor.
Even though he had invited Raina to his home, however, it was not out of a sense of affection or romance; it was out of a sense of mission. There were the fragments of a terroristic group still at large, and Mason wouldn’t be able to rest until they and their co-conspirators were brought to justice. For that matter, General Fanelli was still out and about, causing trouble in ways that Mason knew he could never know for sure.
Mason, pulling up his laptop, placed the flash drive Matthew had given him inside. They were going over all of the evidence that they had painstakingly gleaned from the suspected terrorists—the same evidence that General Fanelli believed he had destroyed.
Raina inched a little bit closer to Mason on the couch as they reviewed the data together. She found it a little more than amusing that the only way she could get this close to Mason was if their get together was under the cover of official business.
But, for the moment, she wasn’t complaining.
Neither, for that matter, was Mason.
As Mason went over at length his plans of keeping tabs on terror cells, and tracking down deadly pathogens, she was happy just to know that he was safe and sound at her side. Above all else, through all the stress of the mission, all of the moments of assumed failure, all of the moments of self-doubt, one thing stood out above the rest.
All’s well that ends well.
And I’d say this one ended pretty well.
For now, at least.
