“Killed?”
“You really need to try and sniff out the evil that’s gone down at this school.”
“Okay,” she said. “Hands in mine. We have to meditate for me to try and find a way to help you access what has been kept from you, to keep you and everyone around you safe.”
“Let’s do it.”
I couldn’t believe she’d picked up on all that just from touching my temple. This was crazy, and all I could do was hope that I would be able to read this chick and make sure she would cooperate with us. She needed to see the darker side of IA; hopefully, that would keep her on track when the temptation to turn dark came after her too.
Chapter Twenty-Seven
“This isn’t working,” Melanie said.
I reopened my eyes. “I’ve meditated to keep myself calm while working with Vannah, and it helped.”
“This is different. You’re not working with a witch,” she said arrogantly.
No, I’m working with a bitch, I thought as my frustration grew.
“That witch is my best friend,” I said. “So, knock it off with the judgy, fairy tone, insinuating that she isn’t good enough. Can’t you just go in while my mind is in this open state, snatch up the fairy powers I need, and activate them? Aren’t you powerful enough to do that?”
“You never paid attention in class, did you?”
“Listen,” I inhaled, pulling back my temper. “I’m a fraction of a second away from going to get help from Dom’s first fairy suggestion. I’m really trying here, but I need you to work with me.”
“Who did Dominic suggest first?” she asked with shock and apparent jealousy in her voice.
“His sister’s best friend.”
“Eileen?” she asked as she raised her eyebrows. “You all realize she’s using Lusa, right? How can you not know that?”
I narrowed my eyes at the gossipy leprechaun. “No, I hadn’t realized that. What makes you think that’s the case? You don’t know anything about Lusa.”
“I don’t need to.” She sighed and whipped her hair over her shoulder, “Since having a thing for Dominic, I noticed I wasn’t the only one.”
She paused, and I kept my face expressionless so she would continue.
“Okay, that’s no surprise. Girls gawk at him everywhere we go. He’s gorgeous and strong. I get that I’m not alone in falling for the guy. Fortunately, I didn’t fall for him over his looks alone, even if they were impressive,” I responded.
“Well, there are quite a few students at this school who would do anything to get him. I’ve learned he had a history of dating girls, then moving on easily.”
“Which was why you thought you had a shot with him,” I said dryly.
“Pretty much. No one really thinks you two are that serious. Don’t take this the wrong way, but no one thinks he’ll really settle down with some girl he’s sort of dating in college.”
“Sort of da—” Shut up, Jenna. “Yeah, okay. I get that,” I lied. “If everyone knew half of the bullshit that we’ve gone through, you’d all back the hell off. Now, let’s get off the subject of Dom and me. What does Eileen have planned with Lusa?”
“She’s only using Lusa to turn her against you and put herself in Dom’s path, hoping to be next in line for him, I’m sure.”
I rolled my eyes. “What is this, the third grade? Are you fairies really this immature and stupid. Has the glitter short-circuited your brains?”
“Of course not. She was going to get close to you and ruin you in front of Dominic on a quest. Embarrass you.”
“Nothing short of the shit you pulled on me,” I answered. “I survived it. It pissed Dom off, and if you would’ve ever stood a chance with him before that, you ruined it by pulling that.”
“Yeah, I know.”
“I guess it’s good to know who all our enemies are. At least she’s out of the question for help with saving this stupid school.”
“She might do whatever Dominic says if you really need help.”
“That’s up to Dominic,” I answered and held my hands out. “I’d like to get back to you helping me open my mind up to my fairy side. I’d like to trust a leprechaun and see where we go from here.”
“Okay. I need you to go into your mind and imagine yourself there. Have you done this before?”
“You can read my thoughts, right?”
“Sort of, I’m sensing you’ve done this before.” She shivered, “But it was for dark reasons.”
“Those dark reasons that you’re picking up on are the reason immortals are still alive and well at this school,” I said.
“Okay. So, you’ve been in your mind before.”
I sighed. “I’ve done everything known to man in my mind. I’ve learned to cloak things without chanting spells. I’ve helped Dominic sleep—which was a shocker since my powers overcame a powerful alpha. I’ve done some stuff, but I have a tendency to do it wrong. Like right now, if I wanted and wished it hard enough, my powers would surface, and I could turn you into a unicorn.”
“How did you do those things?”
“I don’t know exactly. I’ve wished or hoped or was very pissed when I felt energy surging in me, and it just happened.”
“First of all, do not ever wish, hope, or do anything out of frustration with fairy magic. Those enchantments can be irreversible.”
“Holy shit,” I said while gripping my forehead. “How irreversible are we talking here?”
“Do you think there are degrees of irreversible, Jenna? I’m saying what’s done is done. Unfixable. Permanent. Eternal. Do I need more synonyms? You can’t undo something like that. If it’s a weak spell, it will wear off.” She looked at me curiously, “Why are you freaking out? What did you do?”
“I’ve done something that needs to be reversed,” I admitted.
“Oh, great,” she answered. “Your wolf seems to be guarding your mind suddenly. I can’t pick up on what you’re worried about.”
“Then that means you don’t need to know about it. I need to trust you first. Let’s get back to it.”
“Alright. Close your eyes and imagine seeing what your wolf sees in your mind. Your wolf is part of your inner being just like your other magic is. The wolf knows where all of this magic is, but it is guarding it.”
“The wolf needs to step back, then.”
“In your mind, you will control the wolf and ask the wolf to lead you to the magical genetics you have. You will see them.”
“Okay.”
I closed my eyes and was present with my wolf just as I had been before when we dealt with the demon and when Dom entered my mind to help extract the thing. It was bizarre, following my wolf in some weird, mental chamber area, and behind a steel door was where I felt my magic. The seal was outlined with blue and purple hues that glowed and ran around it like electricity. The sound of my wolf whimpering brought me to turn to her. She was lying in front of the door, depressed.
I mentally ordered my wolf away. I was the one calling the shots even though she had to share my mental area with this power. She’d felt it all before, so she had to know it was a good thing I was here to pluck some of this stuff out and help Dominic.
The wolf stood, and slowly sauntered away. I did every mental act of strength I could think of, but the door wouldn’t open. I felt the power that was begging me to unleash it, but the door wasn’t budging. This was bullshit.
I heard an electric humming coming from another location in my mind. To my right was another door with blue surrounding it and then another door beyond that with purple. The magic seemed to be divided and behind two doors. I tried the first, I waved out my hand, and both doors opened at once. I felt it rush to me like it had finally found its long-lost owner.
“You did it,” Melanie’s voice echoed from beyond my mental, meditative state.
I wasn’t done yet. I wanted the power that was behind the door with the combination of energy. I stood in front of the all-powerful, locked-up door, and it was so enticing that
I craved it. That’s when yellow and orange hues appeared with the other colors of blue and purple. This was the magic I needed. I felt it and felt it strong in every way.
I held my out hand, burning with the need to open that sealed door. The wolf whimpered, but I ignored her pessimistic energy, then my body started shaking, and my eyes snapped open.
“What the hell are you doing?” I growled.
“You can’t go there,” Melanie said with fear. “That’s too much for one day.”
I narrowed my eyes at her and suddenly was hit with a blast of lust, hopeful love, possessiveness, and hatred toward others over Dominic. It felt like I’d had the wind knocked out of me as I realized I was reading into Melanie’s mind. This twisted little psycho was putting it mildly when she said she was worried I’d get mad about what was going on in her brain about Dom. I braced myself as the feelings poured out of her and into my mind.
Holy shit! You sick-ass leprechaun! I thought as I filtered through this chick’s overly obsessive emotions. I immediately began to wonder why she hadn’t yet tried to kill me in my sleep, but then the answer hit me straight in the face…Harrison.
Bless that bullshitter’s heart! He saved my ass from this one going dark and possibly doing some crazy stuff to me. I tuned out any and every thought of Melanie’s hopes and dreams of having Dom to herself that were still present. Good grief, Dom and I knew he was screwed with this leprechaun, but I don’t think either one of us knew we had some psychotic creep show infatuated with him.
“I told you,” she said darkly.
“You still hate me.” I narrowed my eyes at her. “You don’t want me to have those powers because I could roast your ass with the snap of my fingers, and you know it.”
“I can’t risk my dad losing his job, and I can’t risk losing a chance with Dominic if he breaks up with you by being forced into another school.”
I wanted to rip her throat out with my own hands, but I restrained myself. “So, after all this girl talk, you’re still the dark, tricky little bitch I knew you were.”
“I can’t help it.” She frowned and shrugged. “I’m in love with him.”
“And when were you going to realize he wasn’t going to return these feelings?”
“After I took care of you,” she said softly, her eyes darkening.
“Let me ask you a question,” I said in a lowered voice. “I’m sure you’ve been in Dom’s mind, so please tell me what gives you hope.”
“Nothing. If Dom loses you, he’ll never be the same.”
“That’s because I’m his mate,” I answered.
“He loves you so strongly that it feeds my need to want to kill you.”
I glared at her. “If you kill me and my powers aren’t strong enough to protect myself, he’ll kill you. Do you know that?”
“I know that you’re his mate, but he would never know I hurt you.”
“Listen,” I said, “You know that I can have your ass expelled from this school in a heartbeat, right?”
“But I know your secret.”
I reacted instantly, and I slapped her across her face. “Snap out of this shit right now! Don’t you dare threaten me with anything I’ve told you, and get the hell over Dominic. If he even knew you thought this way—”
“He would kill me,” she said as she rubbed her cheek, stunned.
“Don’t you think the oracle who sent me here knows this too?” I seethed.
“Who is this oracle?”
“Someone who knows Dominic well,” I said. “You better pull your twisted, dark-ass fairy shit together and quick. I know you leprechauns have a tendency to see the dark side of things, so maybe you don’t realize that your thoughts about this are extremely disturbed. It seems to me you’ve let a little too much negativity get to you, and you’ve been feeding on it. None of this is normal, it’s psychotic.”
“Okay.” I saw tears—fake-ass leprechaun manipulative tears—streaming from her eyes. “I’m really trying. You slapping me…I deserved that. It actually helped fix my mind.”
“Slapping you is minimal compared to what’s needed to fix your mind.”
I thought of what I had done to Dominic, and then I narrowed my eyes at Melanie. I’m going to fix her mind!
In my frustration and fear of this bitch doing something dangerous to my ass, I mentally willed my magic to surface, unafraid of where it was coming from. It surged through me, and my wolf was practically making a pathway for it.
Melanie will never think another lustful, hopeful, or any other kind of thought about Dom. Period. No more romantic interest in him ever again.
As she stared at me, the room seemed to freeze and she was frozen with it, I watched the purple and blue magic leave my hands. I forced my magic at her with every last ounce of desire for this to be irreversible. If there was ever a time to test this out to see if my spell could last, it was now.
I mentally willed her to see Dominic as my mate and nothing more. You are officially over Dominic Rossi. He and Jenna are mates, and you’re happy that Jenna finally likes you. You will do everything in your power to help keep the students at this school safe from the evil that is threatening all of us. If you ever give in to the darkness that lies deep within you, you will never have access to your magic again. You will become as weak as the human race if you feed into your dark side. I was impressing all of this into her mind, fueled by rage and the hope that it would work and it could never be reversed.
I finished off my manipulation, which brought the powerful leprechaun to her knees, and I put her under my spell with orders that she would help all of us end the sinister threat at this school, and help me continue to use my powers.
“We will beat all of this together,” she said with a fiery determination.
“You’re right. We will,” I answered, studying her intently to see if my magic had stuck.
“I’ve never felt more determined to do anything in all of my life. I can feel the evil, I just don’t know exactly where it’s coming from. There’s residual evil here, and there’s active evil.” She sucked in a breath. “There’s evil being fed out of this school and hunting for supernaturals in the human world.”
“Those supernaturals are being taken care of,” I said, watching her closely. “I need to help Dominic. I need to reverse something I did to him. Can it be done?”
“What were your thoughts when you did this to the master shifter?”
“My mate?”
“Yes,” she said with a smile. “They couldn’t have been bad thoughts.”
“They weren’t. They were only good thoughts to help him get rid of something very evil from this school that was trying to hurt him.”
“If you did it with a good heart and with a good purpose, that means it can be fixed. It’s the darkness that will not allow a fairy to reverse its spell.” She looked around the room. “I can sense that very powerful magic was in here, but I don’t understand how. You and I were talking about how to fix the school…” she looked at me in confusion. “There was a hostile force behind this fairy enchantment. Please tell me you didn’t do anything to me in anger.”
“I was pissed, but trust me, it saved your damn life.” I exhaled, “You’re sure it can’t be reversed? You were a pretty dark bitch before I stepped in on you.”
“I’m positive,” she answered. “I feel much lighter and happier, and I don’t know why—especially if you used anger against me. I want to be mad about it, but I can’t be.”
“Oh, my God,” I said under my breath. “What if I can do this to my mom? I might be able to set her free from the evil that turned her dark. There might be a chance.”
“You’re very powerful. Do you still have that magic?”
“It only comes to me when I’m pissed.”
She stared at me for a second. “Your wolf knows that that magic can’t be controlled or summoned by you unless it has the power of the strong alpha in your mate. You have to merge your wolves.”
Okay, more tes
ting on Melanie. “That would mean we would have to have sex. Right here and in this room.” I thought I’d push her to another limit.
“I would leave the room, obviously,” she answered.
“We’re not merging our wolves,” I said. “I found a way to access the magic, I just need to find a way to maintain full control of it.”
“You don’t have access to half of what you’re capable of. Whatever you did to me, it had to be very minor compared to what you can really do.”
“What do you mean by that?”
“I can sense the magic you have deep in you is stronger than what is lingering in this room,” she said. “Do you promise you didn’t do anything horrible to me?”
“I helped you, trust me,” I said. “It might have been against your will, but I’m pretty sure if I didn’t do something, you would have joined the sinister energy at this school. Your mind was prepped for it. You hated me so much, you’d do anything to see me axed out of here.”
“Never!” she cringed. “Why would I ever be that way to any fellow fairy, even if you are part shifter?”
“I was shocked, but it was true.” I clapped my hand onto her arm, “I’ve got to go talk to Vannah, and I need to find Dominic.”
“I’m on your side no matter what,” she confirmed.
“Thank God for that,” I said with relief. “Actually, damn it,” I stopped and rubbed my head, “You need to come with me. I need your help so I can help him.”
“Anything, but won’t we get in trouble for being up late?”
“So long as your dad is the president of IA, and my dad is the top guy on the Supernatural Elite Forces, then I think we’ll get away with working through the night.”
Chapter Twenty-Eight
Everything was working flawlessly in the cover-up for Dom being stuck in his wolf form. No one had heard anything from Ethan, so we were still on the Jenna needs to figure shit out quickly plan. We all sat around the lunch table together while I gorged myself on steaks, wishing we were ready to let the rest of our friends in on everything, but it had to wait. We were sort of flying blind, and the last thing we needed was some idiot selling us out and alerting the school that Dom was in his wolf form thanks to his girlfriend.
