The Forgotten Sky

Page 48

by R. M. Schultz

What did she do to unleash the true potential of this power? Her memories wander.

Rynn looks up at the stars, to the oceans of light and the voids between them, the black emptiness tying it all together. She feels the lives out there amongst twinkling stars and planets, lives so spread apart, so distant they may never meet, but whose actions and beliefs may have positively affected the current state of the galaxy, and thus her life, even more than the people around her.

Rynn confronted the elders in power.

That is what she finally did. Her greatest fear. She stood up to a group of them, called them out on their atrocities, accused them of crimes, and challenged them with everything she believed.

The night sky captures Rynn’s attention again as Whispers of relief and praise and thanks and questions assault her from across the galaxy.

Somewhere out there in the mass of stars, she has a sister, a family member she must find. Her mom may also be out there.

What else does she not understand about her family? About her dad … about this sister … about their mom?

The light of galaxies bathes Rynn’s neck and shoulders, light that traveled tens or even hundreds of thousands of years only to break upon her skin and to light the path before her.

And for the first time in the history of the galaxy, there are two living Phantoms.

For a moment it seems all the solar systems, suns, planets, moons, and all their people and inhabitants fall under the spell of the Phantom. They stand still as Rynn steps forward, into the path of starlight, into the light of the forgotten sky.
