The Last Words of L. Frank Baum
"Now I can cross the Shifting Sands."
- L Frank Baum, author of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz
Baum was referring to the Shifting Sands desert, an impassable desert that is located adjacent to the land of Oz. It is used as a literary device to explain why Oz is essentially cut off from the rest of the world. Anyone who sets foot in the desert will turn to sand.
On May 5, 1919, L. Frank Baum suffered a stroke. He died quietly the next day, nine days short of his 63rd birthday. Baum whispered his final words, as above, to his wife hours before his death.
His legacy lives on in the quintessential American fairy tale that he created in The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. This classic story has been loved for more than a century, and has inspired generations of readers, writers, artists, and dreamers.
What did Frank find across the Shifting Sands? This Oz author likes to think that he found the Kingdom of Dreams, where many amazing and wonderful things find their first imaginings.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Tarl Telford (1976--) was named after a character in a science fiction novel. So from his earliest age he realized that he was destined to be a writer.
He is a novelist, poet, playwright, screenwriter, and technical writer by trade. Inspired by such authors as C.S. Lewis, Isaac Asimov, Ray Bradbury, H.P. Lovecraft, and Louis L'Amour, at a young age he felt the call to adventure and began writing stories.
Tarl is the author of multiple screenplays, a handful of novels, several stage plays, a few short stories, and one really, really long poem.
He lives in Wisconsin with his wife, two dogs, and a plethora of pencils, pens, crayons, maps, and stories.
