Between Good and Evil

Her face still flaming, she quickly moved to Isaac’s side. She begged with her eyes for him to forgive her for her rash speaking. He smiled tightly at her, twining his hand in hers, and he tugged her to the couch. Dane sat on her other side. The two of them towered on either side of her like protective citadels, and she started to feel a little less embarrassed.
“We apologize for stopping in unexpectedly like this,” Anna said. “We had a sudden shift in our agenda, and we would have had to cancel if Mr. Fisher hadn’t allowed us in.”
Marshal put his drink on the coffee table. “Your house here is very lovely. It’s clear that you put a lot of effort into its upkeep. You are also well prepared, and it’s clear to see that you’re eager to be parents. Normally we’d have some concerns, you all being so young, but you’ve got a stable source of income and your character references are excellent.”
Rune nodded, a smile starting to blossom on her face. “And for the record, usually I don’t use that sort of language. It’s just that it’s been a bit of a rough day.”
She closed her mouth again before she could blurt out the whole story. Being a psychic stalker wasn’t going to help their case at all. Luckily, neither Marshal nor Anna seemed to be too concerned with her foul language. Anna turned to Dane.
“You have a younger brother living here as well, correct?”
“That’s right.” Dane nodded. Patrick had moved in with his boyfriend and James got an apartment closer to work, but Keith would stay with them until he went to college. “He’s working tonight, but he was with us in our initial interviews.”
“Our only concern is space. Do the three of you share a bedroom?”
“At the moment?” Rune shook her head. “We all have different sleep schedules, so Isaac and Dane have their own rooms, and I just sleep with whoever’s turn it is that night.” She held her breath again. Too much information! “But we’re in the process of turning the one room into a nursery and getting an extra bed for the other room. We know kids need their space.”
Anna got a brief, indescribable look on her face but nodded. “Would you like to see some pictures? He was born last week.”
Rune leaned forward eagerly. As Anna passed out the pictures of the baby, Rune had to hold in a gasp. This was him. The baby she’d been seeing in her dreams for months now. Happiness welled in her heart as a wide grin broke across her face. Her heart ached with excitement, and she had to hold herself back from blurting out that she wanted to hold him now.
These things took time. She knew that. But she knew that it was going to happen. This was their baby, and he’d be with them soon enough.
“I think it’s safe to tell you the birth mother has already chosen you three. She liked your profiles and she is especially happy to have a vampire-born father for her child.” Marshal smiled at the three of them. “We are incredibly grateful for your timely involvement. Paranormal children are always difficult to place. We will be in contact with you soon to finish up all the details. But we would also like to know if you’d be willing to look at adopting other children in the future.”
“Yes,” all three of them replied in unison and without hesitation. Marshal beamed. Anna smiled, looking pleased herself. They left quickly after that, with Rune especially thanking them over and over.
Once they were out the door, she gazed once more at the picture and let out a squeal of happiness. She spun in a circle and clutched the photo to her chest. Isaac and Dane grinned back at her, and to her surprise she felt her eyes filling with tears. It was more than she had ever dreamed of, this moment. She couldn’t believe that it was happening so quickly, even as she was impatient for time to move just a little faster.
“Well?” Dane grinned at her. “What do you see in our future, Madame Psychic?”
“Happiness,” Rune told him, her grin widening. She took each of their hands and started to pull them toward the bedroom. “Nothing but happiness.”
