Home for Good Page 19

by Nickie Nalley Seidler

Life couldn’t be better at this time. Our life together was complete, as if our love never faded. It just separated a little bit, and then crashed together like the glue we knew would always hold a special bond together. Fate, it was a funny thing. I guess things worked the way they were supposed to. Tate was home for good.

  EPILOGUE - 6 Months later

R ain pelted down on the overhang of the outdoor patio I sat on with my toes up and bathing suit on. Praying the sun would come out and show me what the beautiful sun shine state was really made of. Mentally I laughed, my luck would book a vacation on the only week of rain Florida had seen in months. Resting my hand on top of my enlarged belly, I rubbed it smiling as the tiny kicks reminded me of the beautiful life inside of me that I couldn’t wait to meet.

Keeping my word, I decided to take the kids and I on a trip to spend time together. Who could ever anticipate the trip being this long in coming, but getting pregnant kind of changed things up a little bit. The kids were ecstatic to meet their little surprise sibling coming in just a few short months. Livy was most excited and she reminded me what I should name him or her about a million times. Somehow, I’d eventually break her heart that Trixie wasn’t going to cut it.

“Mommy, I want to go swimming. When will we ever get to go swimming?”

“Well, honey, when it stops lightening you can.”

“I’m not swimming in the rain!”

“Why not? You’re already going to be wet in the pool!”

“That is pretty silly I guess! Hopefully soon it’ll stop, mommy, because Jared won’t play with me.”

  “I’m sorry, sweet girl.”

She stomped back into the rental house and I rested my head back on the chair. Looking out into the grey sky, my mind drifted to Clint. I wasn’t sure how life would be if he were here, but I knew that he was watching over us now. I missed him coming and getting the kids and seeing their happy faces. I missed our random chats out on the porch about anything under the sun. Life moved on. In a bittersweet kind of way.

The doorbell to the rental house rang and I jumped up startled. Who the hell would that be? This was a rental property, the last thing I needed was some sort of trouble or mishaps. I got myself up slowly and waddled my six month pregnant self up to the front door where the kids didn’t even pay any attention to me. I peeked through the window and my heart filled.

Opening the door and seeing dangerous eyes staring back at me threw me for the biggest loop.

“Babe! What are you doing here?”

“I know you wanted this trip to be about you and the kids. But, I just couldn’t take another day away from you and the kids, too. Besides, I was a little worried about my very pregnant girlfriend.”

“I’m so glad you’re here.” I lunged forward into his arms and he kissed my cheek resting his hands on my belly before he knelt down on a knee and faced me.

“I know this is nuts, but see your mama here, she’s the best woman I know and I get you’re spending all the time in the world with her, but I’m selfish and I want the time too.” He smirked before looking up at me with a mesmerizing grin spread across his face. “Paisley, since the day I met you in Blackburn High, I instantly fell in love with you, not a single day of my life went by without you in my mind. I have made some big mistakes in the past, and I’ll probably make mistakes in the future, but I don’t ever want to make the mistake of me not making you my wife.”

Tears flooded my eyes while he dug out a black box with a shiny silver ribbon on it out of his pocket. His glassy gaze adverted back to mine as he opened the box to a stunning solitaire blinding me.

“Paisley, will you be my wife to live and grow old with me?”

“Yes!” I shouted with excitement while he stood up and met my lips with his with a passionate filled kiss. “Yes a million times, baby. I love you!” I cried out.

“Did he do it yet?” Livy shouted back from behind me and I looked at her seemingly annoyed face.

  “What you mean, honey?”

“Ask you to be his wife?”

“You knew?” I raised my brow.

“Yeah, we both did.” Jared stepped out behind Livy. “He came to us and asked our permission and of course we said yes. We also got cake.”

More tears escaped my eyes and I turned to face Tate. “You asked my babies?”

“Their answers meant the world to me and I knew they mean the world to you. If there was a slight chance they didn’t want me to marry you, I knew it would hurt you so I wanted to be sure. I told them I was going to show up on their vacation unannounced and ask you.”

  “Oh my God!” I squealed.

“Yeah, that was the hardest and biggest secret I have ever had to keep mommy!”

“You did good, baby girl, you did good. I love you both, so much.”

The kids ran toward Tate and I.

  “Well, I had one condition.”

  “What’s that, princess?” I asked.

  “We name the baby Trixie.”

Tate and I belted out in a laugh. “No!” Jared, Tate, and I yelled.

“Ok fine.” She pouted with her hands on her hips.

In that moment, life felt completely right. It’s in the moments that feel right that the make up for the moments that feel wrong. Earlier I thought about Clint and as if a sign of approval from him, the sky immediately opened up and sun shined through the windows where we all looked, seeing the rain stop.

A miracle. A true vacation miracle. Well, to me it was a sign. That this moment was as right as I felt. I held my baby bump and Livy darted toward the back door where the pool was. We all took a run for it, me slightly slower than everyone else and once outside, the whole family plunged into the huge pool.

Tate rose above the water and faced me in his full clothes.

“You know what I forgot to tell you, the letter from the doctor came for our reveal and I couldn’t wait to open it.”

  I interrupted him. “What!”

“It’s a boy! And I think we should name him Maverick Clint.”

Looking up to the sky, I closed my eyes. Maverick Clint, I loved that.
