‘I don’t know,’ she said and let out a massive sigh. ‘Dat bitch is comin’ back.’ He followed her eye line and could see Gina marching straight up to the stall.

‘Ya ‘ave no right to speak to me da way ya did! Ya hear?’ barked Gina and Jake saw the fury on the woman’s face. ‘We all know ya mad an’ ya make it all up.’

‘Do I?’ Hatty replied and he noticed she was challenging Gina. ‘Shall I say what I know and see if I’m making it up? Shall I ask people who know?’

‘What are you two talking about?’ he said, seeing their glares were locked.

‘Ya want me to tell ‘e?’ smirked Hatty. ‘He’d be so proud.’

‘Lies! All ya do is lie!’ screamed Gina as Jake noticed a policeman walk up to them. ‘She need to be lock up!’

  ‘What’s the problem?’ he asked.

The man was very tall and thin but Jake realised he was receiving a dirty look and he hadn’t even opened his mouth.

‘Hello,’ Hatty said and Jake saw a little snarl on her lip. ‘You come to cause problems too?’

‘Hatty, that’s a policeman,’ hissed Jake, realising his little lover was in the mood to fight with everyone.

‘Me use to her nonsense,’ replied the man. ‘I am Police Officer Eric Quelly and you must be Jacob Logan, Murray Logan’s son and heir.’

The man flicked Hatty a dirty look as Hatty defiantly stared back.

‘This town strumpet is annoying me and ruining my business,’ hissed Hatty. ‘Can I charge her for being a slut!’

‘Hatty!’ Jake said and grabbed the top of her arm.

‘Gina can ya leave Hatty alone,’ he said calmly and then looked at Hatty.

Jake noticed he was looking at her in a way which made him feel uncomfortable. It was a cross between lust and disgust.

‘How’s ya wife to be? Me ‘ear ya engaged to some woman,’ said Hatty as Gina was now staring at Jake. ‘Lucky it not she!’

‘Ya a mad bitch Hatty! Look at ya! Ya tink ya better dan me? Ya ‘ave no right. Ya disgustin’! Ya nuttin an’-.’

‘Shut up!’ snapped Jake, furious at Gina as Hatty stood there with her arms folded across her chest with a smirk.

‘Ya don’t speak to ladies like that,’ interrupted Quelly.

‘No, you just touch their tits, don’t you?’ Hatty said quietly and Jake noticed Quelly’s flash of anger on his face. ‘Or suck little boy’s willies, aye Gina Glory Glory?’

‘Why you-!’ Gina went to lunge at Hatty as Quelly grabbed her arm.

There was now a small crowd developing.

‘Shall I say it out loud and proud!’ laughed out Hatty as Jake watched the policeman hold Gina back.

‘Ya tink ya be ‘appy wid she!’ screamed Gina to Jake. ‘She filth!’

‘Then we have something in common, slut features!’ shouted out Hatty as a few people laughed. The next thing, Quelly had put his arm around the woman and dragged her off down the road. ‘I think she’s stalking me.’

‘You really don’t know when to stop, do you?’ he said in amazement as she blew the front of her hat and started to pack up her things.

  ‘She started it.’

‘And why was that man looking at you like that and what’s this about touching tits?’

‘He touched my tit once and he got a beating for it many years ago,’ she sighed, shrugging again. ‘Now he’s a police officer and hasn’t forgiven me. You know he gets me in trouble for driving. I’ve been framed.’

‘Is that so? Not because you’re a menace on the road?’ he laughed and wondered again about the history of the woman he loved

Hatty walked behind him as he held her hand and led her along the beach before lunch, letting the water splash their feet. Still she felt nervous when the water touched her. The beach was not her cove but she hid her fear and focussed on what was in front. He was holding both their shoes. Hatty examined the back of his head and neck before her eye travelled down and stopped at his arse. She smiled. Jake stopped, catching her unaware as she walked straight into him.

‘Sorry,’ she replied guiltily, knowing what distracted her.

‘I could see you were un-packaging me with your eyes,’ he laughed as she blushed.

‘So talk. And say it quickly as I’m starving.’

‘You’ve been a bit quiet since Tuesday,’ he began and she stared at him for a moment, noticing how gentle his expression was. This made her feel immediately sick knowing he was going to tell her bad news. ‘And I know when my Ha Ha’s trying to be brave.’ Jake stroked her cheek. ‘But I don’t want you to be sad so I thought it was best I tell you I’ll be leaving on May 30th as planned.’ Hatty felt her heart begin to thump really loudly as she smiled with relief. ‘I text Sam to say I couldn’t make it but I’m going and nothing’s going to stop me, not even you.’

‘I love you,’ she said, grabbing his arms, feeling relief and mortified at the same time. ‘Thank you.’

‘Don’t thank me. I didn’t really want to go and I shouldn’t have said anything, though I’m impressed you’ve been calm about it.’

‘I wasn’t,’ she said honestly, as he laughed. ‘I just realised I can’t put my feelings first all the time. You have to be considered some of the time. Like you said last time we broke up.’

‘That’s very kind,’ he laughed and hugged her as she felt a wave of relief.

  ‘I try.’

Hatty felt herself get hotter. They lay naked near the pool as he made love to her, a few hours later. She was momentarily suffocated as he kissed her hard and pushed deeper inside, grinding his hips slowly. It hurt for a moment as he went even further in. The sensation felt painful and pleasurable but still unfamiliar. Jake grabbed her knees, forcing them back.

‘You feel great,’ he groaned into her ear as he grappled with her body and Hatty was overcome with his lustful sex. ‘I really want to fuck you so much.’

‘I think if you bend me any further I’ll break,’ she said gently, seeing he was enjoying himself as she took a deep breath and closed her eyes.

‘Look at me,’ he whispered as she opened her eyes and stared back. ‘I want to look at you.’

He then started to move very slowly, all the while gazing at her. She saw how focussed he seemed on making love. Then he pulled out and turned her on her side, penetrating hard. Hatty felt his hand looking for her nub, as she parted her legs. He started to rub her very quickly, then slowly then quickly again, squeezing her nipple and kissing her neck gently, all the time holding on tightly. ‘I love you.’

From swelling of her inner lips, she knew she was close as he started to go faster, only stopping for a second to fingering her slowing. He was pinching and squeezing her nipple. His teeth gently pulled on her ear lobe.

The orgasm rocketed through her body, she was shaking as she came. He pushed his cock insider her throbbing hole and he pounded against her body, his hand now gently holding her chest plate. Faster and faster he went. There was a throaty groan as he fell forward. She collapsed onto the grass, as he rolled off, trying to compose her breathing. He placed her on her back and went on top. Hatty felt overwhelmed and exhausted. Jake was kissing her face while holding her arms above her head as Hatty’s body still shook and she felt unable to catch her breath.

  ‘Nice?’ he said.

‘You’re a sex maniac,’ she sighed, wrapping her legs around him and feeling him press up against her, their sweat intermingling. ‘I’m not complaining but you went in deep and I’m not used to it.’

  ‘Did I hurt you?’

‘I don’t know,’ she said honestly, as he stared into her eyes. ‘It was different.’

‘I just want to feel every bit of you.’

‘Me too but I thought you were going to puncture my pussy.’

Jake laughed and rubbed her nose with his. She let out a little sigh of happiness before they kissed for a long time, their tongues gently searching the other’s mouth. She felt his damp body and stroked his hair, eventually he came up
for air.

‘Marry me,’ he said and she did a double take while he continued to kiss her face.

‘What did you say?’ Hatty tried to move her head away as he kissed her throat.

‘Marry me.’ Jake stopped and looked at her straight in the eye. ‘It’s a pretty simple question even though it’s not a question.’

‘Why isn’t it a question?’ she replied, feeling her heart beat faster as she tried to see if he was joking. ‘You shouldn’t say things like that.’

‘Good,’ he said. She was momentarily confused as he reached out for something above her head in his jeans pocket then grabbed her hand. ‘This is for you.’ Hatty felt something scrape along her finger and then noticed it was a rather ugly diamond ring which was far too large. That’s when she realised he was being serious. ‘It was my mother’s and as I’m so cheap and poor, I thought I’d give it to you.’ She couldn’t speak for a moment as he held up her hand looking at it. Hatty didn’t wear jewellery so it felt alien plus she didn’t like it. ‘So that’s a ‘yes’ then.’

Hatty pushed him off and sat up as he propped his head up on his arm and smiled.

‘Why are you doing this?’ she said, seeing he was amused. ‘You know we can’t get married. You know your mother’s family would never agree and I’d hate to think about Murray’s lot. You shouldn’t be giving me this ring as it was your mother’s. My mother and your father were…’ Hatty went to take it off as his hand went firmly around hers. ‘They had an affair when your mother was married to Murray. It’s wrong!’

  ‘It’s right,’ he said softly.

‘Why do you want to get married? We’re too young and-.’

‘My commitment to you, so you know I’ll come back. Obviously, it’s going to be a long engagement while I work but at least it’ll stop men sniffing around.’

‘Who wants to sniff me when I smell of mosquito repellent?’

  ‘The tit toucher?’

‘Him!’ she laughed out loudly. ‘Quelly is another thing all together and I don’t fancy him. But marriage? Don’t go making any rash decision and this.’ She held up the ring. ‘There’s no need to get sucked into what you think you should do.’

‘Ah! Maybe it would have been cheaper if I bought you a year’s supply of repellent to prove my love,’ he laughed. Hatty couldn’t join in, still stunned by what was going on. ‘Don’t you want to marry me?’

‘I want to be with you for the rest of my life, if you’ll let me,’ she said quietly, looking at the ring which was too fussy for her liking with different sized diamonds. ‘And I can’t wear this, I really can’t. It doesn’t feel right and -.’

‘You don’t like it?’ he asked, acting aghast at her comment. ‘That’s not very nice.’

‘Jake will you stop kidding around,’ she said, feeling heart palpitations.

‘But you will marry me?’ he smiled, leaning closer.

‘This isn’t a joke and-.’ Before she could say anything he kissed her as she melted into his mouth then pulled away.

Hatty removed the ring and handed it back.

‘Shit that was the shortest engagement ever,’ he laughed half-heartedly. ‘That’s a ‘no’ then?’ Hatty noticed he seemed a bit upset. ‘You could at least give me a reason why?’

‘I’m not good enough for you, with my background and everything. Your family will be really disappointed,’ she said quickly. ‘I don’t want to cause problems and I’ll just have to be your mistress.’ Jake started to laugh. ‘I’m being honest.’

‘You’re being silly. Do you want to marry me?’

‘If things were different, of course,’ she smiled shyly, seeing him grin. ‘But they’re not and it’s bad enough people knowing we’re together but to tell them we’re now engaged, they’d just freak!’

‘That’s a ‘yes’?’ Hatty looked at his beautiful face and smiling green eyes, holding her breath for a moment as she sat on her knees and looked at him. ‘Is it?’

  ‘Yes,’ nodded Hatty.

  ‘But you hate the ring.’

‘It’s your mother’s ring and it doesn’t feel right.’

‘You want to marry me?’ he said, leaning closer as Hatty felt the hairs stand on the back of her neck.

  ‘Yes.’

‘I better find you a ring you like then, hadn’t I?’

‘I don’t like rings,’ she blurted out and noticed his bemused expression. ‘They’d give me callouses when I work on the wood. I don’t wear jewellery other than earrings on special occasions.’

‘So what shall I give you?’

‘Your heart is good enough for me.’

Jake sat outside his father’s office, three days later, waiting to speak to him. Rose was busy typing away and he then noticed Gina from the corner of his eye, vying for his attention. He focussed on the magazine he was reading then sank deeper into the sofa, realising she was walking up to him.

‘Jacob,’ she said sternly, as he smiled up at her.

He noticed she looked more angry than happy on seeing him.

‘Gina,’ he said brightly. ‘And may I say how lovely you look today.’

He noticed Rose glance over and roll her eyes.

‘It true about you an’ mad Ha Ha Hatty? She a rude gal an’ me know ya doin’ out of pity,’ she said quietly, sitting down next to him on the couch. ‘It must be a joke!’

‘It’s not a joke,’ he said, feeling her body heat. ‘I’ve fallen in love with Hatty Ha Ha, that is true.’

‘Ya serious!’ laughed out Gina and shook her head in total disbelief. ‘Ya a fool!’

‘I know you don’t like her but I do. And I’m not using her and neither have I got sunstroke.’

‘She told ya!’ Gina laughed out loudly and crossed her long legs, propping her head up on her arm and staring at him.

Jake felt uncomfortable, mostly knowing people would say something and it would get back to Hatty. He shrugged and turned to look at the beautiful woman.

‘What does Hatty know about you?’

‘What ya mean?’ she said, the smile wiped off her face.

‘I know she knows something and after Sunday, I could tell it bothers you. What is it?’

‘Hatty twisted!’ snapped Gina. ‘Ya listen to her nonsense.’ He noticed a very sour expression on her face before anger started to etch over it. ‘Go on, have ya fun wid ‘er but when ya go, everyone will laugh knowin’ she was used by Mr Logan’s son.’

‘But people don’t laugh at you?’ he whispered.

  ‘Me different.’

‘You certainly are,’ he said and realised she didn’t have the same gentleness as Hatty. Gina was harsh and there was deep anger and resentment, especially when it came to his woman. Jake stood up and glanced down. ‘We had fun Gina but you’re not the type of girl a man falls in love with. You’re the type we have fun with. Hatty is the sort of woman where a man gives his heart, pretty much like your brother did.’

He noticed Rose look up from her computer and half smile. Gina jumped up and marched back to her desk.

‘And you certainly had a lot of fun with her,’ Murray said. Jake was startled to see his father at the door. ‘Shouldn’t you be at work?’

‘I’ve worked late for two nights so negotiated today off,’ said Jake, walking into his father’s office.

‘And you’re not spending it with Harriet?’

‘She’s busy working,’ he shrugged then smiled, turning to look at his father. ‘And I wanted to talk to you.’

  ‘Fancy joining me for lunch?’

‘Sure,’ Jake replied and followed his father out while avoiding filthy stares from Gina.

‘Looks like you’ve upset one of my employees,’ Murray said, lighting up a cigar and walking slowly towards the house. ‘There seems to be a lot of talk about you and Hatty.’

‘Let them talk. We don’t go out that much and Hatty’s happy enough,’ he replied, starting to get anxious about what he needed to speak about. ‘Only she won’t let me kiss he
r in public or hold hands, we can link arms but that’s it.’ Jake laughed for a moment knowing what they got up to in public places when no one was looking. ‘And I respect her wishes.’

‘Obviously,’ said Murray, giving him a sideways glance. Jake stopped laughing. ‘You know Delores isn’t here.’

  ‘So Hatty said.’

‘She’s gone to see some relatives.’

‘I didn’t know she had any,’ Jake said cuttingly. ‘Any that she’d admit to.’

‘And she needed to get her head around a few things,’ sighed his father and Jake sensed he was leaving something out.

‘She’s hardly talking to Hatty which, I think, is pretty unfair as she’s the closest thing she has to a mother.’ Jake grimaced for a moment. ‘And Hatty makes out she’s fine about it but I know she’s not.’

‘Let them sort it out on their own way.’ Murray stopped and turned to look at Jake, who stepped back a little. ‘It’s obviously something important for you to come and see me.’

‘It is to me,’ he said, feeling his cheeks redden.

  ‘Hatty?’

  ‘Who else?’

‘I see,’ said Murray, continuing to walk. ‘Let’s have lunch first then talk.’

Jake chatted happily to his father as Ethel shuffled around with the plates and food. At one point, he swore she looked like she was going to keel over when she had to balance two plates. He quickly got up to help her.

‘Me fine!’ she snapped, shrugging off Jake. ‘Me strong as an ox!’

‘You don’t look fine,’ replied Jake, prising the plates out of her hands as Murray smiled and Ethel reluctantly let go.

‘Where me Hatty?’ she said dismissively, before smiling. ‘She bored wid ya?’

‘She’s busy carving a frame she promised someone for Sunday so I thought I’d come and see dad,’ he said cheerfully and was met with two pairs of unconvinced eyes.

‘Me see,’ she said and hobbled away.

‘How old is Ethel?’ Jake whispered to his father.

‘She makes out she’s older than she is. I know she’s only in her early sixties.’
