“Me too,” he said softly. She saw him grinning in the next flash of lightning. “Do you uh – I’m not sure what you’re thinking but – do you maybe want to break this pact again sometime?”
“Yeah,” Eve grinned widely. “I’d like that.”
⁂
Eve hauled her bag to the SUV and dropped it into the trunk, pushing it into the small space that was left. It was incredible that they could fit some much stuff in here and still have room for people. She had a feeling that a lot of that had to do with the excellent packing. Rob was incredible at rolling things up and stuffing them into space that didn’t exist. Still though, it was impressive to see.
She pushed her hair back from her face and bit back the smile on her lips as she looked to Jake. He had just finished taking down the towel line they’d set up and was winding it around his arm. He caught her eye and winked at her, which made it even more difficult to keep a straight face as Julia approached.
“You looked as tired as I feel,” Julia said, placing her small bag into another tiny space in the back of the SUV. “Rob and I didn’t get any sleep either last night – the storm was horrible.”
“Ah I wouldn’t say it was that bad,” Eve kept her voice indifferent and then gave her friend a small innocent smile. “It’s all part of the experience, right? Being out in nature and all that stuff. I actually rather enjoyed it.”
“Ugh,” Julia rolled her eyes at her. “You’re probably one of those people who sleeps well during thunderstorms aren’t you?”
Eve shrugged, her eyes flicking away for a moment to catch the smile on Jake’s face as he watched the exchange between her and her friend. She looked back to Julia quickly and again fought back a telling smile.
“Well,” Julia sighed, lowering her voice. “I’m sad that you didn’t give Jake a real chance – it’s a real lost opportunity Eve. You guys could have been great together.”
Eve rolled her eyes. “Julia let it go – I had a great time on this trip. I’m glad that I came and I’m sorry that I dropped your matchmaking record to a fifty percent success rate.”
“What?! No way,” Julia narrowed her eyes are her. “I’m still one for one – it doesn’t count if you never even gave it a shot.”
“You ladies ready to go?” Rob called as he made his way to the vehicle with the last two chairs.
“Yup!” Eve grinned at him widely as Julia continued to look smug.
Eve made her way around her irritated friend and climbed into the back seat of the vehicle as Rob put the last few items in the trunk and shut the door. Jake climbed in from the other side, taking the seat next to her and giving her a grin as Rob and Julia took the front seats. It would be a long five-hour ride home, but when she felt Jake’s fingers gently brush up against the back of her hand she couldn’t help but smile.
It was going to be a good ride.
