April held Dekker’s hand from the initial shock of coming off the astral plane, like being jarred out of a deep sleep and becoming frantically alert. After a burning glare fell upon them and took their breath away with a frenetic spark, they rushed towards the ground with the butterflies of weightlessness.

As passing lights crossed their eyes, she felt Barnes beside her and looked up at the stars in the Nevada sky. Noticing that they were alone, she said, “I wish we could tell them that we’re sorry, but I guess one human apologizing for the harm of another changes nothing.”

“I doubt they would understand anyway. They’re far beyond malice.”

She shrugged. “I don’t think I can show up for work any time soon...”

“That’s okay,” he replied. “I have lock boxes under false identities in banks across the west coast. We could start a dream, hypothetically.”

“Surviving through so much together is how you measure our compatibility?”

“And by the fact that I would never let a shadow cross your heart. If death is still the measure of life, where is the harm in trying?”

April watched the cars on the desert highway and smiled. The night was clear with the lights of Las Vegas glowing in the distance. “An interesting hypothesis.”
