“I suppose you’re right,” agrees Ethan, and I lift my head up so that we can kiss.

A few hours later, I find Jessie on patrol as I’m returning home. It’s my day off, so I don’t have to work, but I want to tell her of my decision, since she’s the only one who knows about Ethan and me. She’s in wolf form, of course, so I have to change to talk to her.

How was your date with Ethan? she asks right at first sight of me.

  It was…fine…but I am at a loss.

You discussed my suggestion with him, then?

Yes. He thinks his vampire clan will accept me, but I’m afraid the wolves will still find out somehow.

Then your only choice is to leave.

  Agreed.

What will you tell the others?

I don’t know yet. I don’t plan on leaving anytime soon, so I will take some time to think about it. If you have any ideas…

No, this is all you. I’m already involved enough as it is. Jessie closes her eyes and looks down. If they find out that I know… At that, Jessie abruptly stops, open her eyes, picks her head up, and focuses her ears outwards to listen. Just then, we hear bushes start to rustle around us. We look around frantically, and Caleb appears, followed by Seth.

Seth! Good to see you up and about again! I say, quickly changing subjects.

I feel better, but not 100% yet. Still, Caleb here says I should start moving around again to gain the feelings back in my legs and other muscles.

So what were you two talking about? asks Caleb. If who finds out about what?

Nothing, says Jessie. Just good old-fashioned girl talk.

Ewww, complains Seth. Then I REALLY don’t want to know.

At that, Caleb laughs a wolf-like laugh. Let’s go, Seth. We need to get your running again, too.

Okay, I’m up for it! Seth immediate takes off running.

Wait, Seth! I didn’t mean without me! Caleb then takes off after him, growling at him as he goes.

Jessie and I giggle and then when they’re out of the hearing zone, we continue our conversation.

As I was saying, Jessie finishes her earlier thought, there’s no telling what they will do if they found out that I knew about you two and instead of stopping you, encouraged it.

  I understand, I say.

Now if you’ll please excuse me, I need to continue my patrol duties.

Thank you for your help, Jessie. I really appreciate it. I can’t imagine what I would’ve done if our clans were still enemies right now.

You’re welcome, Dalia, and please don’t leave without coming to say goodbye to me.

I won’t. You’re like a sister to me now. I can’t imagine leaving you or any of the others without saying goodbye.

She puts a paw on my shoulder and then takes off running in the same direction the boys did. As soon as she’s gone, I shift back into human form on the way home, putting my clothes back on. When I arrive, there is big news arising in the village.

  Decision Made

A couple of weeks pass before I finally decide what to do about my situation with Ethan. Sabrina and Elijah have finally returned from their honeymoon, which I had been waiting for so that I could say “goodbye”, and Sabrina definitely looks pregnant now, with a large bulge of a stomach. They tell us that while they were on their honeymoon, they visited a doctor and found out that they’re having a baby boy. Also, Seth is fully-healed and back to work again.

I keep going to see Ethan whenever I can sneak away, of course, but it gets harder as others start becoming suspicious of me disappearing for hours on end and knowing it’s not because I’m on patrol duty.

“So this is it,” Ethan says. “We’ve finally decided what we’re going to do.”

  “Yes,” I answer.

“Toronto will be happy to have us, don’t worry,” says Ethan.

“And you’re sure your friends there will accept me?” I ask.

“Most definitely,” Ethan responds, and then kisses me on the lips. I kiss him back.

“So you’re sure you want to leave next Friday?” he asks after we release each other.

“I am. I love you, Ethan, and I want to be with you for the rest of my life.”

“And I you.” We kiss again and then hold each other.

I eventually ask to see Sabrina alone, but I ask Jessie to come with me for moral support, so we arrange the private meeting at a time when neither of us is on duty. Sabrina agrees to meet at my house, since Elijah is almost always home.

I get more and more nervous that afternoon until Sabrina finally shows up at the door.

“Calm down,” says Jessie. “It’ll be okay.” Jessie leaves me sitting on my couch and answers the door in my place. “Thank you for coming, Sabrina. Please, come in.”

“What are you doing here?” Sabrina asks Jessie.

“I’m here for moral support. You’ll know why in a minute.” Jessie sits back down next to me and then looks at me. “Go ahead, Dalia.”

“Um…” I start. “Well…I have to tell you, Sabrina, that I am unhappy living here in the wolf village.”

“Unhappy?” Sabrina asks. “Why? What’s wrong?”

“As you know, I have been living here my whole life, and I have not found anyone here I’m attracted to.” Jessie sees me tearing up and takes my hand in hers as I continue. “I have given it a lot of thought, and I have decided that if not here, the one I am meant to be with must be out there somewhere, away from here. Perhaps in another wolf clan?”

“I suppose that’s possible,” responds Sabrina.

“So I have decided to leave our clan and search out the world in hopes of finding him.”

Sabrina comes over to me and gives me a hug. “Are you sure this is what you want to do? We’re your family…”

“I’m positive,” I quickly interrupt her to say. “I’m sorry.”

“Don’t be.” Sabrina lets go of me, and then takes my other hand in hers. “We can’t all stay here forever. Like humans, sometimes you need to follow your own dreams.”

“Thank you for understanding,” I say. Sabrina takes me in for another hug. “I’m going to miss you so much, though. When do you plan to leave?”

“I have decided to leave next Friday.”

“Then we must give you a goodbye celebration.” Sabrina lets go again. “It’s only right.”

  “I don’t know if I can deal with that…”

“I insist! Let’s do it the Thursday before.”

  “Alright.”

After that, we girls stay together for a few hours, drinking tea, telling stories, and laughing like sisters, making it harder for me to say goodbye. I keep telling myself the whole time that it’s the only way I’ll get to be with Ethan.

  Last Goodbyes

That Thursday before I am set to leave, we do indeed have a grand Bon Voyage Celebration. Everyone is there from both wolf clans, but I am wishing my parents could be with us as well. Sadly they died years ago from fatal diseases – first my mother, and then my father – when I was a teenager. Sabrina, Kira, and for some time, Able, raised me together until I was of age to live on my own. Sabrina wound up like a sister to me as a result.

I leave quietly the next morning, before anyone is up to see me go. I had said all my goodbyes the evening before and could not do it again. Tears once again took over my eyes as I looked around one last time, first at my house, and then at the village outside. I head off in human form, unable to carry my belongings with me as a wolf. However, they all fit quite nicely into a backpack I had acquired years ago. We wolves don’t keep many things.

When I get to the lake, Ethan is right there waiting for me, his own belongings packed up in a backpack as well.

“Good morning,” he says and gives me a kiss.

“Good morning,” I say, kissing him back with tears still in my eyes. He gently wipes away a tear falling down my cheek. “Are you sure you want to do this?”

“It’s the only way,” I say, unable to stop the tears.
/>   “I just…don’t want you to be so sad all the time,” he says as he takes my hands into his.

“I won’t, now that I’m with you for the rest of my life.” I kiss his lips again and smile.

  “Then shall we…?” I nod.

At that, we start our journey. First by foot, then by plane, and then by car. While we wolves have no money, the vampires have plenty. Being able to live among humans has its advantages. You can get a job as long as you don’t bite your coworkers. Well, we wolves could, too, but imagine not being able to shift into a wolf whenever you need to. For instance, if you see someone becoming a victim of a mugger. You’d want to be able to shift into your wolf form and save the victim, wouldn’t you?

When we arrive in Toronto in our car, which it turned out we now own, he asks me to close my eyes.

  “Why?” I ask.

“I have a surprise for you.”

“Okay,” I say, and do as he asks of me.

Not long after he tells me to go ahead and open my eyes, and I am taken aback by what’s in front of me – a cute little house painted in light pink and decorated with dark pink shutters on the windows, a matching dark pink door, and a colorful array of flowers around the front of the house. The driveway we are parked in is filled with cobblestones in various shades of gray.

“It’s…wonderful,” I tell him. “But I thought we were going to stay in a hotel and find a place together?”

“I lied about that. A friend of mine living here in Toronto told me about this place, and I couldn’t pass it up. It wasn’t pink, originally, either. I had it repainted for you.” He kisses me on my cheek as I keep staring in awe at the house that I would never have dreamed of having when I was living among the wolves. Now don’t get me wrong; the house I had in the wolf village was great, but this house…it was amazing compared to my old house.

“Shall we go inside?” Ethan asks.

  “Most definitely.”

We both get out of the car, retrieve our backpacks from the trunk, and head towards the front door...our front door. He pulls out a key from his pocket and hands it out to me.

“Would you like to do the honors?” he asks.

“I can’t. I’m too nervous,” I say. “I have never had a house before. I mean, not one like this.”

Ethan lets out a chuckle and opens the door for me, and as I go inside, I have to keep myself from fainting. Everything inside is as fabulous as the outside – the furniture is all brand new, not like the hand-me-downs I wound up with at my old place. The white paint on the walls of every room look fresh and new. I go into the kitchen, and it has all of the major appliances, and I imagine myself cooking there for the first time. There’s a television in the living room. I have never had one before. And a stereo! The only music we ever had in the wolf village was presented by us wolves.

“I want to show you one especially important place,” Ethan interrupts my awe to say, and then takes my hand to guide me. He guides me down a hall leading from the living room, into a bedroom that is so big. It’s like, double the size of my bedroom back home. Again, there’s beautiful furniture inside, which includes a large bed with bedding decorated with pink and purple flowers.

Ethan lets go of my hand, and then I feel a tug on my back as he releases me from my backpack and drops it onto the floor. He then drops his own, and stands in front of me. He puts a hand on my cheek, and starts to kiss me.

“Shall we break this place in?” he jokes when he releases my lips.

“I’m ready for it,” I say.

I am, of course, a virgin, having never found one to mate with, so this is all new to me, but as he kisses me again on my lips and then travels to the underside of my jaw and down to my neck, I realize what I have been missing. He starts to undo my clothes and I follow suit. We then make our way to the bed and he picks me up and gently drops me onto it before continuing the kisses, from my lips again to my neck, and down to my breasts, which he caresses gently with both his hands and his lips before heading down further. When he reaches my special place, he starts off with his fingers, making me moan for several minutes before taking it on with his lips. Oh my God, is this what I have been missing my whole entire adult life? I think to myself as I feel an orgasm come on for the first time and experience what feels like an explosion within me.

He then releases me, and I don’t want him to stop, but then I see what he is intending to do, for his special place is hard now.

“Are you sure you want to go this far?” he asks me.

“Yes! Oh, Ethan, yes! I’m ready!” I moan.

We become one, so to speak, and as he goes back and forth inside me, I feel more and more explosions come and go.

When we finally finish, he releases me, gets into bed with me, and puts his arm around me, and we lay together for awhile before falling asleep.

The next morning, after the first amazing night in our new house, I get dressed and go outside to take in the view from our front yard as I sip my first cup of coffee. Now, don’t get me wrong, I’ve had coffee at my house in the wolf village, but this…this coffee was so good. He must’ve stocked up our house with food at some point when we weren’t together, and that included this amazingly-good coffee.

But as I drink the coffee, I feel a hit to the back of my head and fall, hearing the crash of my cup hit the ground just before I go completely unconscious.

When I wake up, I am at the steps of the white wolf palace. How did I get here? I think as I feel a bit of a pain in the back of my head from the hit I took earlier. I look around to my right and see Ethan, just waking up as well. We are both tied up with very strong ropes.

But what I see in front of me, is what really surprises me. All of the vampires, including Camilla and Julian, and wolves are staring up at us, looking really confused.

“Welcome! Welcome!” I hear a voice from behind us. He makes his way to standing in front of us, and I realize it’s Christian, Julian’s brother.

“What is this??” Ethan asks, struggling against the ropes that keep him down. “How are we back here again? I thought you were dead!”

“Ah, but did you see me here fighting in the last battle?” asks Christian.

Ethan thinks for a second. “No…you weren’t,” Ethan admits.

“That’s because I sent my followers in and stayed back, just to be safe.”

Just then Julian speaks up. “So what’s the meaning of this, brother! Why have you called us all here?”

“To show you what vile, wretched thing has been happening right under all of your noses, and none of you knew about it!” Christian gestures to Ethan and me. “For these two…are having a love affair!”

Gasps emanate from the crowd before us, and I see Jessie shake her head. Sabrina looks surprised as well.

“And this is why we should not be allies, people!” continues Christian. “Remember Romeo and Juliet? Except this is no Romeo OR Juliet!” Christian starts pacing back and forth across the steps. “Who knows what vile creature will come out of these two if they should have children. Do we want a wolf-vampire hybrid among us?”

“Christian, brother, if this is your desperate attempt to once again make enemies out of ourselves and the wolves, you are about to fail.” Camilla tells him.

“What do you mean? Surely these wretched wolves don’t approve of this?”

  “I do!” Jessie speaks up.

“As do I!” I am surprised to hear from Sabrina.

More and more approvals shout out from both the vampires and the wolves, and together they start heading up the steps toward Christian, who is now looking really surprised.

  “What? How can this be?”

“Because you are too late,” explains Julian. “We already know of this relationship between Ethan and Dalia, and we approve.”

“As do we,” agrees Kira and Callie.

  “But…why??” asks Christian, shaking now.

“It is for the good of our kind and theirs,” Julian continues. “It will unite o
ur two kinds for the rest of time.”

I, of course, am confused. When did they decide this? Certainly not before I left. I look to Ethan again, and he has a big smile on his face, like he knew. Why didn’t he tell me?

“Guards!” Julian then calls out. “Arrest this man!”

At that, a group of vampires exit the crowd, ascend the steps, and take Christian into custody.

“Wait! You can’t do this!” yells Christian as the guards take hold of his arms. “I am your brother! Does family not come first?”

“Not when it comes to you,” responds Camilla. “You stopped being our brother when you betrayed us.”

As he gets taken away, followed by Julian, Sabrina, Elijah, Seth, and Jessie rush up to us to release us from our holds.

“Are you okay?” Sabrina asks me.

  “Yes, but how…”

“I can explain,” says Ethan. I look at him. “Before I left, I confided in Julian and Camilla about us, and like I said, they were accepting of our relationship. But knowing that you feared how your kind would feel, I chose to go ahead with our plan to run away.”

He then joins me, as Sabrina and the others take a step back.

“And since everyone is here together, there is something I want to ask you, and instead of nobody ever knowing, now both our families can know.” He gets down on one knee, and I start to feel my eyes water once again.

“I am sorry, but the ring was left behind at the house, and I will have to place it on your finger once we return there.” He takes my hands in his, “But I have spent my whole life looking for someone like you, and now that I have found you, I don’t want to let this go much longer. Dalia, will you marry me?”

I look around for a moment, and everyone around us and staring up at us in participation. I then look back down at Ethan again.

  “Yes.”

  To be continue…
