Mistaken Hero (Retribution Games Book 1)
Page 17
Beckett doesn’t walk over to my father. Instead, he walks to me.
I frown, not understanding.
“Did you find Odette?”
He doesn’t answer me, but I see a card in his hand—the same card as everyone else, marked with his blood.
He’s not going to enter. He can’t. He loves Odette. He wouldn’t want to marry me.
But he drops the card into the bowl. I watch as it falls in slow motion, mixing with the other cards.
I quickly glance back up and really look at him without my own anger masking him. His eyes are red and puffy, his face drained of color, and his nostrils flare every time he takes a deep breath.
There is only one reason he would ever enter this game.
My heart sinks.
Odette’s dead.
I want to hold him and punch him at the same time. I’m pretty sure that’s how he feels, too, based on his fist continually clenching and bulging a vein in his forearm.
He’s not entering because he wants to marry me or save me like Caius is doing. He’s entering to get revenge for Odette’s death. I don’t know who he blames—my father, the Phantom Brotherhood, me, or someone else, but the need for revenge is clear on his face.
It’s then that I realize that Beckett didn’t give my father the idea before he turned me over. He gave it to him after he realized Odette was dead. To punish me. To hurt me. To make me suffer. Or to give him an opportunity to fuck with my father or find the man who killed her. Beckett isn’t on my side.
But my heart speeds, because maybe he could win. Maybe I want him to win. Maybe I could love him. Those maybes are all possible.
The more impossible outcome is him loving me after losing the love of his life. Can he love someone he hates?
He leans in and whispers, “I call these the Retribution Games. I’m about to kill everyone that had anything to do with her death. Sorry if a little blood splatters on your pretty tiara, Princess.”
Then he disappears back into the darkness, and I’m left standing on the stage horrified for my future while desperate for a man set on revenge. Beckett won’t save me, but then again, I didn’t ask for a hero.
“Game on, Hero.”
