Lorra looked at Dawn sharply. She reached out and patted her cheek. Dawn smiled. Lorra cocked her head and deliberately reached for contact with Dawn.

People feel things? People don’t like fire?

Dawn kissed her on the forehead and touched the little girl’s heart. She put her down on the sofa while Lana handed out bottles. Lorra watched Dawn go, her eyes big and round.

Finally, Dawn was almost at the med bay. The hall was empty, and she could hurry. She knew it was okay to be late, but she didn’t like it. She had been chosen for a special position and she took it very seriously.

She went through the med bay, waving at Yazen and Whelon as she headed to the rooms out back. A couple of them had been converted into large, comfortable spaces. Here was where she did her other work.

The Preor who had come to earth were well looked after by their commanders, even in the hardest of times. Dawn had begun to notice something as her sensitivity grew and her comments about it had changed medical routines around the ship.

There had been so many disasters. So much conflict. Not a single Preor was untouched by the negativity. Dawn had found all of the Preor needed heart healing, but they were too proud to ask. This was a serious thing on a military vessel. Warriors were expected to take care of themselves, physically, emotionally, and mentally. How else could they be effective in their position?

Dawn tidied up the rooms, puffing up cushions and making sure all the seats were soft and comfortable. She brought in cups and hot water for tea and then waited with some nervousness for her superior to come in and start the day. She was a little unsettled at showing up before her teacher, who was usually here working hard long before Dawn arrived.

At the sound of a light step near the door and a wash of emotion that was warm and welcoming, Dawn hurried to the door to meet Khaza. The two women hugged, feeling love flow between them in a rushing, warm flood. Dawn’s skin tingled and she sighed with pleasure.

As they pulled away Khaza reached out and brushed Dawn’s temple, smiling and shaking her head. Dawn smiled back.

“How many do we have today, Dawn?”

  “About fifty.”

“We’ll never get through that many.”

Dawn shrugged. “We can try. Is everything okay? It’s not like you to be late.”

Khaza waved a hand, moving over to the table to make a cup of tea. “It’s fine. Eric was fussy and Chashan was having a male moment where he couldn’t change a nappy and make a bottle at the same time.”

Dawn laughed. “Perfectly understandable. So long as everyone is well. You know, Khaza… I have to say something.”

Khaza smiled and sipped at her tea.

“You don’t have to say it, child.” She touched her heart lightly. “I know what’s in your heart, just as you do mine—or anyone else’s, for that matter.”

Dawn blushed furiously, looking at the floor.

“I just need to say it,” she said and brought her eyes up to meet Khaza’s. “It means so much to me that you would teach me yourself. There are other heart masters and you are so busy with your new family. Truly, Khaza, it’s an honor to work with you.”

Khaza put down her cup and came over to Dawn, stroking her hair.

“No, my child. I am honored.” She smiled, looking into Dawn’s eyes. “Honored to train the most powerful heart master I have ever seen.”

Dawn’s eyes dampened and she threw her arms around Khaza, both women hugging as tightly as they could.
