"Are you fucking kidding me?" Nate Burndock drew his head back and lowered the binoculars, the look on his face contorted into a scowl of incredulity.

"You know her?" asked Halifax who kept his own goggles pressed tightly to his eyes.

"No, but Grace does. Told me he met her at the crime scene the other day, but supposedly told her to stay away."

"She don't listen so good. Who is she, anyway?"

  "Chief of Police."

Halifax slowly lowered the goggles in front of his eyes and turned to look at Burndock, scowling slightly. "I thought we had that loop all closed off?"

"Me, too. Apparently the 'good ol' boy' before her was all bought and paid for, but then got himself caught up in some kind of scandal."

  "Shit."

"Yeah. They ran him off and tried to bring in his exact opposite. Looks like she's not quite so affordable." Burndock pulled out his phone and thumbed a shortcut key, then plugged his wireless receiver into his ear. Seconds later Grace was on the other end.

"What is it, Burndock?" he asked, a slight edge to his voice.

"We got a problem, sir. Your lady Chief of Police is paying Bill a visit."

There was silence on the phone. Long, horrific silence. The kind of silence that made you wonder what evil thoughts were going through the person's head that they were afraid to speak aloud.

"What should we do?" Burndock continued, electing to not wait for his boss' verbal reply.

"Not a damn thing," Grace said. There was a quiet click and the line went dead.

Burndock just sat there in stunned silence, then returned the binoculars to his eyes. The blue police car was turning around and now headed back down the dirt road from where it had come.

"What did the boss say?" Halifax asked.

"I'm more worried about what he didn't say," replied Burndock. Grace didn't want him to do anything?which meant he was going to take care of this little problem himself.

Things were about to get a little trickier.
