I slid the ring the rest of the way onto his finger and we didn’t wait for the pastor or whatever to give us permission. Poe’s hands gently cupped my face and we kissed. My arms going around his shoulders, my bouquet lovingly crafted by Lys scraping the back of his dove-gray tux jacket.

The wedding party erupted into cheers, camera shudders clicked, and applause swept over the rippling waters of the Chesapeake Bay.

We parted, and I was glad for this Teflon lip color that didn’t transfer, as we turned and the preacher announced, “I give you Mr. and Mrs. Jeremy Poe!”

The little band struck up, music played, and we walked down the aisle, the rest of the club, both men and women, and Poe’s immediate family following, after the guys had gathered their patched vests from their mannequins, of course.

The preacher directed the rest of our guests to the larger entertainment tent set closer to the water for refreshments while the rest of us were busy getting the marriage license signed and having our photos taken.

We signed the marriage license in front of a judge, hired specifically for this part and had our photos taken, the little table with its three seats behind it decorated in satin and lace, a crown of flowers around its edge.

“Congratulations, you two,” the judge murmured, and we kissed once more. This time, now that the papers had been signed, everything somehow felt more official.

We took so many photos with the bay as a backdrop. The bridesmaids in their peach dresses, the groomsmen in their handsome gray tuxes. Poe’s family, us with my granddad’s guitar setup. I missed him, but by the same token, I knew he was here, and I knew he was oh so proud and pleased that I’d found a man like Poe. A man who wanted to help me be the best me I could be. A man who didn’t want to change a thing about me.

Someone like my gran had been to my granddad.

Poe gave me roots, I gave him wings and that was all that mattered.

Still, what I wouldn’t give for even a minute alone with him right now.

Reflash catered the wedding and served amazing fare. We ate and drank champagne toasts, and as the sun began to set, we had our first dance to There Will Be Time by Mumford & Sons.

I looked up into his eyes and he looked down into mine, and we might as well have been the only two people on the planet.

“I love you, Mrs. Poe,” he whispered and kissed my forehead as we swayed. I felt my eyes close as I basked in the warmth of his love and whispered back, “And I love you, Mr. Poe. For the rest of our lives. For all that there is beyond them. I love you.”

He pulled me closer and we swayed. Surrounded by love, surrounded by family both chosen and blood, both physical and ethereal.

  He gave me roots.

  I gave him wings.

We were all that we needed to be.
