“I’m sure your dad didn’t want to appear like he was taking advantage of us after Mom kicked in $400K for the Palo Alto place.”
“We could have probably swung something ourselves,” B.D. pointed out. “Hurricane gave you that cost of living bump, plus the promotion. I’ve got my stipend. And we had $600K to put down. I’m pretty sure we could have gotten a loan for the rest like regular people.”
“Sure we could have, but Mom feels a bit guilty about being independently wealthy, and she didn’t want us to struggle like she did. Look, it’s nice knowing that we can stand on our own if we have to and just as nice knowing we don’t have to. Besides, a 1,000 square foot condo for almost a million is ridiculous. Mom’s money makes it seem just really expensive.”
“Whatever,” B.D. huffed while leaning over to kiss me as I checked on my passport and itinerary another time.
“When are they picking up the Pack Rat?” asked B.D.
“They should be here within in the next two hours, but Wendy said she’d come wait for it if we need her to.”
“And the flight leaves at 3pm?”
“Yes, B.D. We should get there by 1pm. It’s an international flight.”
“And they’ll deliver the Pack Rat to the Palo Alto place?” she asked.
“Yes, they’ll hold on to it for a few weeks then ship it to California. I’ve already got it scheduled to be delivered two days after we get there.”
“Will we stay at the condo until the stuff gets there?” she asked looking worried.
“Of course not. I’m not sleeping off jet lag in an empty condo. I have reservations at a lovely hotel.”
“Of course you do,” she nodded in agreement. “You always have a great plan.”
