  She only cared about Jared.

He set her on her feet, stared down into her eyes. “Is that a yes?”

“That’s an of-freaking-course.” She kissed him again. “I love you, Jared. I love you so much.”

She’d never seen his smile so wide. He lifted her again as she squealed in his arms, tightening her hold on his neck.

“Did you hear that? She said yes!” he called out to the crowd.

She burst into laughter, hiding her mouth behind her hands. She saw Gavin half-scowling, half-smiling at the back of the room, and turned back to see Jared smirking. He turned back to her. “Now how’s that for some good PR?”

  She laughed even harder.

Wrapped her arms around him and pressed her lips to his. “You really are a PR nightmare,” she said against his lips. “But you’re my dream come true.”

He grinned and kissed her again.

“Good enough for me.” He pulled back and placed his hand on the small of her back, turning to face their audience.

She hugged him close, smiled at the cameras, and finally felt her fear fly right out the door.

  Her heart was safe.

And even if it wasn’t… he was worth the risk.

  Epilogue

Jared pulled away from Vanessa’s parents’ home, easing up their driveway and back toward the main road.

“I still can’t believe you moved them out here,” Vanessa said from beside him.

He grinned. “It was their dream. And I knew how happy it would make you.”

“The only thing that sucks is that we have to drive three hours to see them.”

“Maybe not.” Jared glanced at her from the corner of his eye, his gaze falling to the way her hands sat protectively over her round belly. It was hard to believe that in only one month, they’d be meeting their baby.

  “What does that mean?”

Jared grinned and turned down the next driveway, about a mile from her parents’.

“I don’t think this is the street,” she started, but her words faded as he pulled up to the large home, with acres of wooded land surrounding it. And the SOLD sign in the front. “Jared, you didn’t.”

He couldn’t contain his joy as he parked the car and jumped out to open her door.

He helped her up, and watched her face as she stared up at the home. Their home.

“How can…” Her voice trailed off again. He loved when he left her speechless.

“I’ve decided to step down from Walker Enterprises and hand over operations to a close friend and partner.” Kyle would do a great job running the business. He’d had a background in security technology similar to his own.

She turned to stare at him, eyes wide. “Jared, you can’t.”

  “Why not?”

“I- it’s-” she sucked in a deep breath.

Jared bent to kiss her nose. “I love when you get all flustered.”

She coughed out a laugh. “It’s your baby!”

He wrapped her in his arms, rubbing his hands over her stomach. “You’re my baby. This is our baby.” He kissed her cheek. “I’m still going to run the foundation, but I can do that from here. Where there aren’t any cameras around, or lurking reporters.” He chuckled. “Besides, Gavin does most of the hard work, anyway.”

She giggled, then spun in his arms, resting her hands on the back of his neck. “It would be nice to have my parents so close to help with the baby.”

Jared kissed her forehead. “We could get animals. Build a playground. Whatever you want.”

Her smile grew. “I just want you. Me.” Her gaze went to her belly. “Us.” She looked back to him. “A happy family.”

  “Done,” he smiled.

Whatever she wanted, he’d give to her. Anything in the world.

All of these stories are romances, and all seek to honor our veterans and active duty military members, but that's the majority of connection between them.

Some are sweet, some are steamy. Some are modern, some are historical. Some feature active-duty soldiers, some star vets. Some take place during wartime, some during peacetime.

How We Can Honor Those Who Serve

We can’t all be Jared Walker and give everything, but we can all give something. There are so many incredible organizations out there that support our veterans and active-duty service members.

This is a cause that’s near and dear to my heart. I volunteered with my first nonprofit at just seven years old, writing letters to a soldier who was stationed overseas that didn’t have family back home to communicate with.

This experience, and the many others that followed, forever changed my life.

Whether it’s donating money, food, supplies, or time, everyone can contribute something to help those that risk everything. Please consider supporting local or national nonprofit organizations that work to protect those who protect us.

Two REAL organizations that do incredible work every single day and hold a special place in my heart are:
