by Jenee Robinson

Just when I think my head is going to explode from all the new names I’m supposed to remember, Evans steps up. Bowing to my father, he asks permission to take me out onto the dance floor.

Thankfully my father agrees, and Evans takes my hand, leading the way. He walks us to the middle of the dance floor, where couples slow dance their way around us. He pulls me close, putting both hands on my hips as I wrap my arms around his neck.

Laying my head on his chest, I take a deep breath, just breathing him in. This is perfect. Just relaxing in his arms, I can feel the the stress of meeting all these new Fae wash away. He just holds on to me as we sway to the music, no talking, just touching.

Dancing for a few more songs, I realize it’s time for more Princess duties. Turning around, I go to my father, who was watching us from the side of the dance floor. I meet more Fae and some of the children. How adorable are they! Making our way to the last table, I see Kallista sitting with her mom, the Fae from the flower shop, and a Fae I guess to be Evans’ dad.

Evans nods to his father, and they rise to greet us.

“Welcome, Princess. It is great to see you again.” His mother says as she hugs me.

“I’m glad to see you again as well. Are all these flowers from your shop?” I point towards the center pieces.

“Yes, your father is my best customer,” she replies.

Smiling at her, I reply, “I wish I had a green thumb. I can never get anything to grow.”

“Maybe once this threat is taken care of I can help you with that wish,” she smiles.

Evans hugs his mom and sister, shakes his father’s hand, and then leads him over to me. “Father, this is Princess Liauna. Princess, this is my father, Kalyvn. My father is the head sword maker for the kingdom.”

“Oh, did you make the sword my father gifted me?” I ask, excited.

“As a matter of fact I did, Princess. It was my pleasure, it is a beautiful sword,” he replies.

“Yes, it is. I thought Evans’ sword was the most beautiful sword until I saw the sword Father was giving me,” I laugh.

“Indeed, Princess. I think it is my best work to date, and I’m glad you approve.”

Evans speaks up, “Father, you’ll have to see her wield it. She is a natural, though still a little sloppy, but training will fix that.”

Kalli walks up to Evans, and slaps his hand. I nod in approval, and we both giggle a little.

“Thank you, Kallista. I was about to do that. I’m sure with time and practice, I will get better. For now I must go attend to my father, but hopefully we can visit again soon. Please excuse me, it was nice to meet you all.”

Giving his mom and sister a quick hug, Evans and I head back to my father, where he is chatting with Alix.

“Daughter, you remember Alix. She was just informing me that there have been some sightings of Deezy in the Fae realm.”

“Oh no! I need to start my training right away. We can’t let this virus infect all of the Fae.” I reply.

“Right you are. We will retire for the night, and Evans will start your training in the early morning.” Roman tells us.

Alix claps her hands to garner attention, and everyone stops what they are doing, “I hope everyone had a wonderful time tonight. Please, let us all retire for the evening.”

We hear a few groans, but everyone begins to leave in an orderly fashion with minimal fuss. Just as we reach the door, I hear the screams. Evans pushes me behind him, pulling his sword from his hip.

Reaching for my hip, I find nothing but tulle. Damned dress! In this moment I seriously miss my sword and jeans. Looking around, I run to the nearest table and grab a pair of knives. Now, I am ready for whatever is to come.

I run back to where I left Evans to find him fighting, side by side, with his father and sister. Creepers fill the exit, the ground is littered with the bodies of both Fae and creepers. I take my place beside Evans, longing for the reach of my sword. I’ll have to get closer to creepers than I would like to be.

These are recently turned creepers, only having the black veins running all over their bodies, no real decay can be seen yet. Taking them on one by one is our best option. I grip the knife tightly in my right hand, stabbing the closest one underneath it's chin, and with my other knife gripped tightly in my left hand, I stab it through the eye. I swiftly remove my knives and prepare to fight the next one, until I see a sword impale it from behind.

My father’s guards have arrived; they dispatch the remaining creepers, then start to gather the bodies, separating the Fae from the creepers.

Evans is talking to one of the guards, I hear him say to burn the bodies, secure the castle, and check for stray creepers.

Looking down, I see my beautiful dress is now ruined, I’m once again covered in black blood and guts. Sighing, I walk to Evans and tell him I’m heading to my room.

He grabs my hand, telling me to wait a moment.

My head is still spinning from the creeper attack, I lean on Evans for support, and he wraps his arm around me.

He finishes informing the guard on what needs to be done. Unwrapping his arm from around me, he takes my hand. In silence, we walk, and before I know it we are back at my room.

Walking in, I just want to sink into my bed and sleep. This night was mentally and physically exhausting. I’m covered in blood and guts, so no sleep for me yet. Shower, then to bed.

“Evans will you please untie my dress? I want to get this off, shower, and hop into bed as soon as possible.” I say turning my back to him.

How many showers will I need today?

He whispers in my ear, “As you wish, my Princess.” Sending shivers down my spine.

Holding up the front as he unties the back, I thank him, and head towards the closet.

“Princess, I will be back to check on you after your shower.”

A little disappointed he’s not joining me, I open the closet door. I shed my dress, hoping it isn't ruined. Then with care, I remove my tiara, earrings, necklace, bracelet and ring, placing them atop the chest. I find some new underwear, and hurry to the shower.

Turning on the shower with ease, I step into the wonderfully warm stream.

Tonight was a great night with Evans, other than the creeper attack; no place is safe from them now. Guilt fills my heart, and I can’t help but feel Anton and Callum should’ve been here tonight.

“Well, if you wanted to shower with us, all you had to do was ask,” a voice whispers in my ear.

Startled, I turn around. Standing behind me, drenched with shower water, are Callum and Anton.

They smile at me, and I am quick to return one. It’s only been a couple days, but I can’t believe how much I missed them. That is until I remember I’m naked.

“Turn around,” I yell. “Better yet, out!” I command as I point to the door of the bathroom.

As soon as the words are out of my mouth, this strange squeal starts. A few moments later, Evans runs in the shower, followed by guards.

I can’t help but notice, he’s only in a towel. Evans was in the middle of his shower, and yet he is willing to drop everything to make sure I’m safe. That brings a smile to my face.

Until I realize for the second time that I’m naked, and people are staring. I pull Callum and Anton in front of me as shields. Peeking through their arms, I look at Evans and the guards that fill my bathroom.

Man, Fae men and women are beautiful.

“There was an unsanctioned teleporting inside the castle.” Evans tells us.

“I realize that we have found the cause.” He continues, shaking his head while turning to the closest guard, “Please have the King brought to the Princess’ quarters in fifteen minutes.”

  The guards take their leave.

“Guys, follow Evans, I’m going to finish my shower, alone,” I order Anton and Callum.

Receiving sad puppy faces from all three, I watch as they walk out the bathroom door, and I finish washing. I hurry to dry off and get dressed. Enough peopl
e have seen me naked today, I don’t want to add my father to that list.

I pull on the soft, clean pajamas, they are a simple set: a tank and capris. Glancing around the bathroom I find a blue fluffy robe hanging behind the door. I remove it from the hanger and slide it on. OMG, so comfy. As I’m tying the robe, I exit the bathroom and I see my father is standing, while my guys each have taken a seat on the bed.

“So it seems you have a teleporting power, my daughter.” Roman says. “It’s impressive that with just a thought, you were able to pull them from the human realm into ours. You are more powerful than I suspected. Very interesting,” he finishes, tapping his finger on his chin.

“I really don’t know how it happened. I’m sorry,” I say, looking down.

Anton rises from the bed, and walks over to me. “Princess, never be sorry for your powers. Hold your head up high. I’m sure we missed you as much as you missed us.”

That’s the second time that I’ve been told to hold my head up. I guess I should start listening.

“Yes, I was missing you both. Evans being by my side has helped me remain strong, and has been my voice of reason.” I tell them all.

Then realizing, I continue, “If you’re here, there is no one to protect the faction. I need to get home now.”

“Calm down, Princess.” Callum pipes in, “Maybe you’ll be able to transport us back.”

“That’s a great idea, but I’m unsure how I transported you here at all. I have to get home to my family. They are all I have left, besides you guys.” I tell them as I feel tears roll down my face.

“Liauna, I will send a letter to them with some of my most trusted guards, as well as have them stay with your family. They will protect your family and friends, as well as get them the supplies they need,” Roman replies. “You are needed here to train, learn control of your powers, as well as help with this Deezy situation. Especially with sightings in the Fae realm, and the attack tonight on the castle.” I wipe my tears away, and smile at him.

“That will be perfect, we do need to find out about this Deezy, his witch, and this curse. Controlling my powers would be great too. I don’t want to hurt anyone.” I tell them.

Evans wraps his arms around me, and I’m grateful for the support, “We are all here to help you in any way you need.”

I thank them all and inform them I’m ready for bed. Roman bids me goodnight, leaving the guys and I alone.

“I call left side!” Callum hollers.

“Whoa. Back up buddy, this is my bed. I didn’t say I was sharing.” I give him a wicked smirk.

Hopping in, I find the middle of the bed, and I’m out in seconds.

  Chapter 6

We have been training with our swords for what feels like forever. The only perk is that Evans took off his shirt, leaving him in just tights, but I’m wearing down fast. With each strike or blow I take, my sword grows heavier in my hands.

Just when I think I can’t practice any longer, Evans calls time for a water break. Thank goodness. I walk to the nearest tree, and plop myself down in its shade. Anton heads over to me bearing a cup of water. Handing it to me, I thank him as he takes a seat next to me.

“You’re hanging in there well,” Anton says. “Not bad for your first practice.”

“I think I’m gonna die,” I reply, out of breath. “I need more cardio.”

He raises an eyebrow at me.

“Get your mind out of the gutter,” I say, slapping his leg.

“Can’t blame me for thinking that,” He laughs.

“How were my parents doing with me gone?” I ask.

“They were doing ok. Your mom cried the whole first day, but your dad comforted her well. She perked up some, but would tear up at the sound of your name. Raelyn was about the same way, but she’s mad at you for stealing Callum from her.” He says with a little laugh.

“Leave it to Rae to be mad at me over a guy.” I reply. “How were the supplies doing when you left?”

“Callum and I had just made a run the day before. We stocked up all the food and water. They should be set for a week or so. King Roman’s guards will be there in plenty of time before the next run will be needed.” He reassures me.

Just as I’m starting to enjoy my time and conversation with Anton, I look up and Kalli is walking towards us. Anton starts heading over to talk with Evans and Callum as we begin the second part of my training. I go to stand up as she speaks.

“No, Princess, you may stay seated. We will start your magic practice slowly. It can take a lot of energy to wield, depending on your talents.” She tells me.

“Oh, thank goodness. I don’t think I can stand for awhile after sword practice with Evans.” I reply.

She partially hides her smile behind her hand, “Yes, my brother is a tough trainer, also somewhat uptight. It is nice to see him smile.”

“I’m glad to see him smile, too. He’s lucky to have you as a sister. I know that Fae children are rare, and your family was very blessed.” I reply.

“Indeed, Princess, they were.” She comments. “Now let’s see what magic you are blessed with.” I get the feeling she doesn’t want to talk about herself much.

To start, she has me sit crossed legged, telling me to focus on teleporting myself to the middle of the field. I close my eyes, and nothing. I hear a squeal and I open my eyes. I just teleported Kalli to the middle of the field, not myself. Oops.

She stands up and jogs back over, laughing, “That was interesting. Try again and teleport yourself, not me.”

Laughing, “I make no promises on that.”

I close my eyes, and I focus my mind, controlling my breathing. Feeling a little whoosh of air, I open my eyes. I can’t believe I teleported myself right into the palace kitchen. Dang, this isn’t where I meant to go, but I am hungry. I grab a muffin on my way out the door. Returning to the field, Kalli relaxes some when she eyes me.

“Well, I did it, but I ended up in the kitchen,” I tell her.

She laughs as we take our seats again.

“That’s ok. It’s a start. Let us see if you have any elemental magic. I myself have some earth powers.” Kalli explains.

She extends her hand up, my eyes following. I can see new leaves form on some of the dying branches, as if she breathes new life into them. It is amazing to watch.

Excitedly, I ask what I need to do. She promptly tells me to focus and center myself again, just like with teleporting. Focusing on earth, she tells me to try and grow the grass around me. After a few minutes I open my eyes, disappointment fills me. Nothing. Kalli tells me not to worry, and to next try focusing on water, as it’s my father’s element.

Focusing my energy, and controlling my breathing, I picture a ball of water sitting in the palm of my hand. Peeking at my hand with one eye, I let out an excited squeal; in my palm is a ball of water.

“Now focus on that ball, and will it to a target.” She tells me.

I assess my location, focusing on finding the perfect target. My gaze stops on Callum and Anton, who are just goofing off as I train.

Reaching for my water powers, I picture a huge ball of water resting in my palm. I will the ball of water towards them, levitating out of my hand, moving swiftly in their direction.

Bam! It hits them both in the face, as it split in two before impact. Kalli and I stifle our laughter, but not enough, as Anton and Callum must have heard us. They stand and head our way. When they reach us, Kalli and I have a straight look on our faces, but seeing them dripping wet, I can’t help but laugh again.

“Do we have you to thank for that, Princess?” Callum smiles, his pointy teeth showing.

“Maybe,” I reply with an innocent smile.

“Guys, please leave the Princess be, she has more practice.” Kalli tells them.

“Fine, but I’m not going to forget this.” Anton promises.

Air is up next, closing my eyes I refocus my energy on making a little breeze. My hair starts to tickle my face, I peek to see surprise wr
itten on Kalli’s face.

Is she shorter than she was before? I’m no longer looking her in her eyes.

Weird, what is going on? I look down, and I’m hovering over the ground.

“What...?” I start as I fall on my butt. Ouchie. Kalli is just staring at me.

“Did I do something wrong?” I ask.

“Not at all, Princess, I just haven’t seen a Fae before that has both water and air powers, along with teleportation.”

“Well, I guess it’s a good thing I’m meeting with the Elders tonight I can ask them.” I reply.

My focus this time is on fire. I will a fireball into my palm much like I did with water. Feeling some warmth on my hand, I open my eyes. But instead of a ball of fire, my hand is on fire. I start to freak out. Evans runs over, and using his water powers, he puts it out.

“Interesting, your sister has earth powers, and you have water powers.” I comment.

“Liauna, your hand was on fire, and you want to talk about our powers?” Evans shakes his head.

“I’m fine. I will be mentally prepared for it next time. As for right now, I think it’s bath and nap time.” I tell them both.

“I agree, but first I’d like you to try fire one more time. After your nap I will bring you some dresses to pick from for dinner tonight.” Kalli informs me.

“Sounds perfect. Thank you, Kalli .” I reply.

Breathing in, and closing my eyes, I try to focus on fire, willing a small ball in my hand. I feel a warm sensation on my hand, and I’m afraid to open my eyes. I peek with one eye to see a small fireball. Amazed, I open both eyes.

Kallista looks like a proud momma, while Evans is slack jawed.

Giggling a little, I turn my focus back to the ball of fire. I will my power to surround it with water and put it out. It obeys me, and does just that.

“Great work Liauna, go rest.” She says getting up and walking away.

Evans helps me up, and we walk over to inform Anton and Callum that practice is finally over. I need rest, I’m worn out from the sword training and magic practice.
