  The sound of two successive farts broke the silence.

  Cooper’s brows shot up. “Hey, it wasn’t me. That was Mindy.”

  Carter snorted. “Shame on you, Coop. Blaming it on your own daughter.”

  A round of snickers ensued.

  “That’s pretty low,” Hunter chimed in, a rare grin on his face, until Mindy started to cry. The guy stiffened. “That’s my cue.” With another nod, the guy ambled away to retake his post against the kitchen wall.

  “Damn, Coop.” Carter wrinkled his nose. “You need a stick to scrape your legs or something?”

  Cooper scowled. “It’s not me, you asshole.”

  “Hey, language, remember?” Mel scolded.

  “Very funny.” The new dad kissed his daughter’s forehead. “Time to go find Mommy so we can give her your surprise.”

  RJ sipped his beer, enjoying the chaotic, happy sounds only a holiday could bring.

  “What did you all do to poor Hunter to scare him off?” Lori asked, sliding an arm around him.

  RJ laughed. “I think he has an aversion to babies.”

  “Don’t think that’s true for single mothers though,” Mel said. “The guy rubbernecks from ESI’s garage whenever Crystal shows up for work at the parlor.”

  He nodded. “I’ve seen it, too.”

  “Yeah, so have I.” Lori grinned. “Not sure if he’s aware that she has a little boy, though.”

  Mel snorted. “Then things could get quite interesting around here.”

  “Interesting is good.” Lori squeezed his hip.

  RJ was thinking the same thing.
