  ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

Richard Wood was born in Rhodesia, and after completing his studies served as a lecturer at our University of Rhodesia. In 1984 he accepted a post at the University of Durban, Westville, where he is now Professor of History. For a number of years he has been working on the History of Rhodesia, and there is still much to be done before the task is completed. Obviously he has a profound knowledge of the events associated with this book. I am indebted to him for the unstinting time which he gave to editing and checking the facts of my work, and for agreeing to write an Introduction.
