“How is it I always feel so small next to you?”

He squeezed her hand and stepped right into her space. “It’s the power of my protection. I won’t ever let anyone hurt you. Ever again.”

She smiled. “For as long as we both shall live?”

He gave a gentle nod, then flipped open the jeweler’s box and the aquamarine ring she’d admired on their trip to the islands glinted up at her. It was as breathtaking as the moment.

“For as long as we both shall live,” he murmured. “Will you, Vega…” He lifted the back of her hand to his mouth and kissed it. “…the love of my life, do me—”

“And his family,” Cat, Emma, and both kids chimed in. Love glowed from JP’s eyes.

“…the greatest honor of being my wife? Of being by my side for the rest of our days on this earth…and probably even some after.”

Before she could answer, he cupped her jaw. “I love you, baby. I can’t stand the thought of not having you in my life.”

Nor could she. She broke eye contact and looked from one Davenport to the next, so proud to know that they would all be a part of her new family. Love overflowed at the realization of just how totally JP got her. He’d known she’d question how his family would feel about this, so he’d shown her before she could ask. She couldn’t be happier.

Leaning forward, she put her face in front of his, brought the microphone to her mouth, and whispered yes before forgetting about every single person watching them and giving him that kiss she’d promised.

Cat wants nothing more than to pick up right where she and Brody left off eighteen years ago, but she’s still haunted by a terrible secret of her own. One that could devastate Brody.

Brody Hollister spent years pining over Cat Davenport. They met young and loved passionately—until she disappeared from his life. Now she’s back, as spirited and beautiful as ever.   Acknowledgments

As with most books, this one did not happen alone. I wrote it alone, yes. Many, many hours alone. Yet it didn’t come together without the help of many friends. Without all of you, this book could never be what it is today.

I’d like to thank Chuck Henry and Robert Dillingham first of all, for the speed plotting session at Calypso Café. Many changes happened from the initial plot to the final one, but without you, this book would not have happened at all. You guys are the best. Thank you.

To David Lynn for spending a wonderful lunch with me answering all my questions about dyslexia, and even the ones I didn’t think to ask. Thanks to you I was able to figure out just who JP is.

And of course, to my wonderful brainstorming group: Trish Milburn, Lara Hansen, and Gretchen Stull. Not only did you help steer me in the right path along the way, but you gave me the press conference scene. For that alone, I bow down to your excellence. This book could not have ended any other way, and I simply couldn’t have gotten there without you.

Additional people who helped are all the writers who joined us during the first annual Ruby-Slippered Sisterhood’s Winter Writing Festival. Not only were you guys excellent when I needed a quick idea or just pure motivation to keep going, but I finished this book with you. It is my greatest pleasure that this is my debut novel, as I had so many friends writing with me along the way.

To Susan Carlisle. I absolutely could not have gotten the edits turned around so fast without you and your family’s cabin. Thank you so much for bringing me into the group!

And last, to my wonderful agent and editor. To Jill Marsal for taking a chance on me and finding the perfect home for this book. And to Kelli Martin for loving JP and Vega as much as I do and helping me make this book the best it can be. You made the publishing experience a true pleasure. I could not have seen this dream realized without either of you and am so glad to have you both in my corner.
