“Oh, he’s cute,” Kim said.
I crossed the ballroom floor without thought save for the blue eyes that watched me as if he knew every emotion that flooded through my body. Couples drifted around me, the music they danced to faint in my ears.
Marek smiled when I reached him, his eyes solemn. “I couldn’t bear to think of you here by yourself.” His eyes lingered on the necklace around my neck. The blue gem didn’t match my dress, but I had stubbornly refused to take it off when Mom suggested it.
“I didn’t think you’d come,” I replied. I could have kicked myself for saying it.
Marek shook his head. “I couldn’t let you down. I’ve done that too many times already.” He took a deep breath, his eyes troubled. “Would you understand what I meant if I said you mean too much to me for me to risk hurting you?” I nodded wordlessly, unable to speak past the knot in my throat. He shook his head. “But being away from you is killing me. I should stay away, but I can’t.”
He avoided my eyes. I took his hand gently and traced the faint white scar on the back. “I know who you are, and I’m glad you didn’t stay away.”
Marek lifted his eyes to mine. “Really?”
I nodded. “Without a doubt.”
He smiled and took my hand, the light from above catching the gold flecks in his deep blue eyes. “Shall we?”
