  His brother paced back and forth. “Mother and the others are trying to reassure her sisters, but I’m afraid she might need to come out there and calm them. Something happened to them, too.”

  Stepping forward, his father smiled at the women. “Please sit and we’ll try and explain. Again we’re sorry this has happened to you. We were not warned or allowed to interfere.”

  Lifting Maya into his arms, Akaos took a seat in the front facing the woman with Warden at their side. His brothers stood behind them, while his mother held the one woman, Eden, in her arms.

  His father leaned against one of the chairs and sighed. “The Tetraheros are a race far superior to any we know of. They created us and yes, I mean they actually created us. We have many traits of different species found in different worlds. We were made to protect the gates, the doorways to these other worlds. The Cometedge Pact was created before any of us were born, but we know of it. It was imprinted in our minds even as infants.” His father looked over at him and he nodded.

  Akaos took over where his father had stopped. “The Pact goes something like this. In the time of extinction a group of women, also on the verge of dying out, will be imprinted. This imprint will allow both races to survive. They will join together, each created for the other. So they, the Cometedge, will never face the lonely battle of Knights of the Gates. The knights suffer much, but with this compact, their burden will be lightened by the light of their bonded. Only from this pact will it allow both species to survive and flourish, becoming one.”

  Each of the women stared at him, then at each other. “So you’re saying that our species, the cat shifters, are now imprinted to accept your kind as our mates?” Lacey snarled.

  “Stand down, Lacey now!” Maya ordered and stood. “What the hell is your problem? This is the second time you have threatened what is mine?” Maya advanced on her a little at a time.

  “I know this is hard on everyone. That we are way out of our comfort zones, but none of us have ever taken out our anger on anyone. These men are here to protect us and help us find other sisters.   “It’s wrong! What if we were meant to be with someone else?” She challenged him and he hid his smile behind Maya’s head.

  Warden stepped up now, under control once more. “I know this much, the Tetraheros couldn’t change who fate has intended you to be with. They have made it possible that all of you could bond with us. With the Tetraheros, you never know what they will do. Some believe them to actually be what you people believe to be Gods. As far as I know, not one of us has seen one of them.” His eyes searched his fathers and he shook his head.

  “No. Not that I’m aware of. The only way the elders have communicated with them is through the mind. When they spoke earlier in our minds, I wanted to say there was more than one person, but only one common voice spoke.” Jericho stopped talking and frowned. “They said something else, something I believe that only I heard.”

  “We can’t interfere, but we will warn you. This one you created has an unnatural way to open a door.”

  “What do they mean by unnatural?” Maya shivered and curled closer to him and Warden. “Why do I have the feeling it has to do with all the killings?” She re
sted her head on his chest and held onto his shirt.

  “I don’t know for sure and we won’t know till we find them, but we won’t stop till we do.” He hugged her tight and watched as Anthony handed Lacey a drink and wrapped a blanket around her, before he escorted her back to her seat.

  All of the women looked afraid and scared as they buried themselves into the blankets his brothers wrapped around them.
