  112. The curator of the Smithsonian Institute wrote that 'It seems to be an early one - he operated from 1873 or 74 until his death in 1898...' In: 'Letter of the Smithsonian Institute to the American Precision Museum,' dated February 11, 1985. According to Pond it is a Hydro-vacuo Engine. In: 'Notes and Odds & ends,' August 9, 1985, not published.

  113. The instrument was donated to the Franklin Institute in May 1932 by a Henry Howson of Philadelphia. The Franklin Institute sold the device in November 1973. I have the name of the current owner on file. Howson & Howson were at one time Keely's attorneys. Correspondence with Dale Pond, dated January 9, 1997.

  114. According to Pond, the device is Keely's Disintegrator. The instrument was verified by the Smithsonian Institute. I have the name of the now deceased person who donated this device on file. In a telephone conversation with the person whose grandfather had found the device, he presumed that his grandfather had found the device in a junk-shop, since he was always on the lookout for wings mechanical. Presumably this was in the thirties. Where and under what circumstances he had found the device, he did not know. In the letter of note 112, the curator wrote: 'Actually, I'm amazed to find that one of these things survives.' In a telephone conversation with the American Precision Museum, the Director expressed his wonder at the fine craftsmanship that went into the construction of the device. I also learned that some time ago a person from Florida had called the museum with the claim that he had purchased a device at an auction, of which me caller thought mat it might be an original Keely device. Although I have been unable to check mis story since the name and other details of the caller were lost. It is quite possible that more engines have survived.

  86. Even Fort writes that 'the motor had been run by a compressed air engine, in the cellar,' in: Wild Talents, Claude Kendall, 1932, page 341. The 'New Encyclopedia Brittanica,' 'Macropaedia,' 15th edition, 1981, vol.14 lists Keely on page 105 in an article on perpetual motion and states about the exposure: 'They found concealed beneath me floor a giant metal tank evidently used as a reservoir of compressed air to the generator. In the walls was located a network of brass tubing that conducted the compressed air to the generator.' No mention is made about the water motor. In this, Fort was preceeded by me press. See 'Great Hoaxes of History,' Wilkes Barre Times Leader, December 28, 1909. The water motor was also noted by the Hartford Courant: 'Evidence that Rubber Tubes Were Connected With a Water Motor,' the lead of the article ran. I have communicated with the Massachusetts Historical Society. On my request a search was conducted to uncover possible documentation on T. Burton Kinraide, but nothing was found.

  89. Kinraide did suggest that persons who would produce evidence of 'being victimized,' could obtain an invitation for visiting his laboratory. In: 'Keely Motor Tricks Were All Reproduced,' The Press, July 16, 1899. Also chapter 5 and chapter 5, note 107. I have found no documentation of anybody actually having done so.
