There were other minerals laid out there too but those were the two primary ones that we had been using at the moment. Everything was done now...everything except for the last goal that we had in mind.
And it would be harder than I could ever imagine. How would I even go about inciting an uproar that would potentially drive every other party that was searching for this gem into chaos. I didn't even know the answer to that question but I had a feeling that all I would have to do would be to show this gem off to the right people and have them freak out. That's what I thought it would be actually.
Merak did the idea of how to do it sound a lot simpler than it actually was.
First off, how would I even broadcast something like this so that the right people even caught onto it? How would I even send a message to Karo and the others that I finally had the gem without my head being blown off?
Well, the answer...the answer was to send out a video feed of where the gem was and hope that a massive battle could consume all of them so I could get in at the last moment and kill Karo. Maybe I would even set a bomb near their site of combat and allow all of them to die in a large explosion while they gathered there to search for the gem.
Stars it was infuriating!
"What has you bothered?" she asked me as she guided the nanites back, the work was mostly done, we haven't told anybody on this side about the gem and I think that they didn't even want to know. They didn't want their peace on this side of the planet to be disturbed in any way so they simply turned away any news that regarded the "Search."
"What are you thinking about?" she asks yet again as I sit here on the edge of the cliff. Piles of rock laid behind us along with the ship.
There were several possible options in my mind at the moment. We could simply get out of here and return the rock or we could actually stay here and finish off this man like she said that she wanted. It was something that she wanted to do and that she told me she wasn't going to leave without getting it done so I assumed that this was the one thing that she was going to refuse to compromise on.
And a good part of me agreed with her, I agreed that we needed to take this man down this instant or we might not ever get the chance again. Karo might run away to whatever corner of the world that he wants and we would have to contend with the fact that we would never find him ever again so this was the only way.
As for how we were actually going to get him to pay attention? Perhaps there was a plan there after all...perhaps there was something that we could do.
So I brought up my concerns with her and she listened with those softened eyes of her's that hardened each time I mentioned Karo's name. It was clear to me that she wanted this man's blood as much as I did and I am more than happy to oblige her if that's what she wanted. I could also call my employer and ask him if giving him the gem would decrease all the tension here but I had a feeling that he wasn't going to give me the answer.
So, we had to do it ourselves.
"I have an idea. Why not lure them using the gem? Lure them to a spot where you could easily dispose of all of them and that way we can reveal that we have the gem and kill them at the same time." She suggested, her hand resting on a small boulder near where she was standing.
"That would put us at risk." I muttered "That's not really an option in my eyes considering the fact that we would likely get overwhelmed by the sheer number of bandits on the other side...But perhaps if we put down a decoy we could lure them down here, we could lure them into the place that we wanted them to be but they would sense that...I suppose that the only way to really take them all down would be to be there in person or...maybe we could establish a decoy gem." I muttered and she smiled.
"Any idea on how to do that?" she asked.
I glanced at my ship and wondered if the 3-D printer was working and if it could produce material like this. Unlike the rest of the "searchers", we actually had some clues as to what the gem was like and a signal to match it so they had no idea what it looked like or if it was really the gem. It looked far more otherworldly than any other mineral and something just told you that this was it, that it was the thing that people had been searching for, for this entire time and that we had only found it based on luck.
It was the only thing that we could lean on but I suppose that it would have to do.
"But I guess that it could wait a bit. Come on, it's been a long night since we've had the ship to ourselves." She whispered into my ear and I nodded.
She walks back into the ship and checks the interplanetary web for an update on how things were going back at the other side of the planet. There was nothing much that was said with exception to the fact that the search was still ongoing although there was a small section about how Karo and the other warlords declared a temporary "truce" to kill someone that had been pestering them.
There was several of these warlords but apparently, Karo was one of the most powerful, he controlled a great part of the continent and the area that I had been operating in had only
been a small portion of it. The main point where people had been searching was condensed into a rather small area in this valley, that was where we were when we had been searching, that was why we never bothered with any other areas and that was why everyone was so focused on that tiny portion of land.
And now we were going to suggest that this gem was located in one of the roots and ignite a final battle that would whittle their numbers down to nothing.
"I can't wait to have this over with." she stated while sitting there across from me with half a ration plate while I ate the other half along with an additional full plate. It was the usual, grilled meat on beds of grains and vegetables. She seems to be more than happy with her meal judging by the smile on her face, it made sense because during the last few days of the search we had been eating whatever I could hunt as well as some fruits that hung from the trees.
It was the first real meal that we had with exception to all those inns that we had hit up during our search.
"Are you going to see your parents?" I asked while she chewed on a part of her steak, "After all this is done I mean."
She grinned, "Most likely."
"I can't wait to meet them...Although I'm not sure how a human couple would view some strange Delosian that had basically arrived and claimed their daughter." I muttered and she giggles.
"Don't worry about that, they'll like you, I'm sure of it." She states with a shy smile.
"How will they take the news that you basically got with a bounty hunter?"
"Better than you think. They had thought that I would end up with a bandit when I had come here. Least you're rich."
"Not yet."
"Pretty soon though." She giggled.
I had to smile at our renewed enthusiasm and our banter. Just a few days ago we were all tied up in the hideous rage of it all, in the sadness and despair that came with not finding this one thing.
I had been examining the mineral itself and they were right, the chemical makeup and the atomic structure of some parts of it were completely different in comparison to everything else that the galaxy had seen at this point. It didn't even really follow the usual structure of protons and neutrons, it seemed like it was different in this...strange new way that we were entirely unfamiliar with.
And it would likely spark a bidding war if my boss got it, it was up to him what he did with it though. I certainly couldn't think of any uses for it but he would likely be selling it or who knows? He might even have a use for it that I can't even think of.
