The Overt Operation (Department of FAE Book 2)

As he kissed her, Dylan teased Vanessa, “Do I get a good-bye kiss too?”
“You’re coming,” she pointed out, but she still gave him the kiss.
Alex told them all that they needed to go because he’d like to get his hero’s kiss from his wife, and that Dylan’s father would likely be eager to see him. They had reported through the orb that Dylan was fine and they’d return home, but still, it would be a relief to Agent White.
Bryan said the magic words, and they all crossed through the arch.
Gail was ecstatic that they had all made it back alive, and Agent White ran over and hugged Dylan.
Gail had dinner waiting for everyone, so she brought them up to the dinning room, and they all caught up on everything that had happened since they’d been gone.
Agent White was terrified by Bryan’s story, but he was so proud of what all his son had done, and assured him that he would be given honors by the department, and a raise.
Vanessa noted that she was surprised they could eat dinner in such peace, and Agent White explained that Director Mahon had taken a vacation while some of the events from before were worked out. He told them that he wouldn’t be surprised if Mahon was fired.
“That’s good,” Dylan replied.
“Let’s hope,” his father responded. “Unless he is caught, he will be trouble. Who knows where he is or what he is up to?”
“At least everything has ended peacefully in Elliad,” Vanessa encouraged.
“For now,” Alex added. “Do not think that Evander being caught will end the troubles. Even taking war prisoners will not end the rebellion. It will just slow it down as a new leader arises and they regroup.”
“Regroup?” Vanessa asked.
“Don’t underestimate Fardoragh’s power,” Dylan suggested. “He is brutal. I know Godric wants power too. There are many power hungry people out there. There are also many people who think combining our worlds will somehow solve their problems.”
“It won’t,” Bryan stated.
Vanessa put her hand on his shoulder and suggested, “Where it would be foolish to entirely open the archway and allow anyone to go through, it might be wise to allow some passage between it.” She smiled at him and suggested, “I know you want Nea to be able to pass through unhindered.”
At the mention of Nea, Bryan smiled, but she could see a longing in his face too.
“I’ll see what can be done and think about what would be wise to do,” he agreed.
Vanessa sighed and explained, “It’s a tricky situation. Opening the arch would allow people to pass through who mean harm and could hurt people on both sides. There is a reason that Alizar shut the portal. It’s also in our house, and we’d hate to have total strangers coming in and out. Yet, with approval, it might be good to find a way to get people through even if they aren’t in love with us.” She glanced over at Dylan and blushed.
“Can we talk alone?” Dylan asked her.
“Only inside the house,” his father answered. “I said we don’t know where Mahon is, but there are still those trying to get into the library. There are medical research doctors who desperately want to study fairies. There are many who would exploit their magic too. We are only safe here because Bryan’s spell was so good.”
Dylan and Vanessa agreed to talk inside. They went into the great room to the right of the entry and sat on a couch.
“What do you want to talk about?” Vanessa asked.
“Us,” Dylan answered. “This adventure has been so overwhelming. I went through things I never imagined. Yet, it has taught me so much. I hope if you ever break up with me that Bryan would still allow me back into Elliad. Yet, after what we’ve been through together, I cannot even imagine dating another girl. I guess I’m just wondering if you really meant it?”
“Meant what?” she asked innocently, even though she knew quite well.
“That you love me,” he answered. “You told me you did in the dungeon. Do you?”
She hesitated to answer. What if he didn’t share her feelings?
“I hope you meant it,” he added. “Vanessa, I love you too. I know I’m young, but I think I’ve been through enough to know what love is.”
She blushed and admitted, “I meant it.”
The kiss he gave her in response was beautiful. They’d been through so much together, and their connection was so deep. Perhaps they really were in love.
After the kiss, she hugged him around his waist and laid her head on his chest. He held onto her too.
Alex came in with Agent White.
“We aren’t doing anything wrong,” Dylan assured them.
“You’re fine,” Alex replied. “I trust you. We came because there is trouble.”
“What kind?” Dylan asked.
“It’s an emergency call from the department,” Agent White explained. “It seems that eccentrics have been released. They are tearing up the town, demanding that Bryan opens the arch.”

Book 3:
The Expert Eccentrics
Power comes in many forms, some of which are easily corrupted. Men who will pay any price for power are deadly, as their ends justify any means to them.
With the magic of the arch breached from both sides, Bryan must learn to rewrite the very rules of magic or both worlds could be overthrown and destroyed.
