I wasn’t sure how, or why or what I had done to make the gateway, but I was filled with relief and exhaustion.
Ashe’s eyes drank me in, and he smiled that crooked grin that made my knees weak. “Sydney...”
I wanted to live in this moment, revel in amazement, but I couldn’t. Fear gnawed at me. Turning away from where my beautiful gateway had been, I searched the area. This was not the same place I saw through Evgeni’s portal.
We stood on an exposed rocky outcrop, but Evgeni’s ritual had taken him to a forest.
Aaraeth lay sunning herself in the intense heat. She looked over at me, her tail swishing away at a bug that circled her.
“Oh shit, where are we?” I whispered, as the wind whipped my hair around.
This is the realm of dragons, she told us.
Ashe put his arm around my shoulders and looked out at the landscape with me. Dragons darted in and out of the trees in the distance, their shrieks and bellows carried away by the wind. Beyond that, a giant orange sun hung low in a deep bluish-purple sky.
Ashe stared around with wide eyes, running his hands through his dark hair.
Before he could speak, Corbin leaned in between us. His arms snaked around us and a large grin lit his face. “Wow, the dragon realm. I guess we called George’s bluff… so… uh… how are we getting outta here?”
I bit my lip before answering, “I’m not sure, but at least we’re together.”
