“I knew you’d love it.”
“It’s amazing now, but can you imagine what it was like back in the day with the big sailing ships navigating up and down the coast?”
“It would have been a sight.”
“So what are your plans for this? You aren’t going to get rid of it are you?
“Oh no I could never get rid of your favorite part.”
“How do you know it’s my favorite part?”
“You used to tell me. Remember that summer we went looking at old houses? You loved the idea of the widow’s walk, women in long dresses searching the horizon for their loved ones return.”
“I can’t believe you remember that.” Darcy had not expected to hear that.
“I remember a lot of things,” he said with a tinge of regret coming through in his voice.
“Yeah, me too.” After the moment at the stones, she knew that was true.
“You loved this house.”
“No, you loved this house, the Federalist style, the symmetry.” She turned to look at him. “You used to go on and on about all the architectural details. We always ended up back at this house.”
He looked at her for a moment, debating whether or not to say what he wanted to say. He decided to take the chance. “Darce, we always ended up at this house because as you were talking about how you imagined life used to be, we were also imagining how our lives would be someday when this was our house.”
That was true, she thought. She had imagined back then that someday they would live in this house. Admitting that made her heart ache a little still. She wasn’t going to bury that feeling this time, but just feel it and let it go. “We did, didn’t we?” she replied looking at him, a sad smile of what could have been on her face as she remembered their walks. “ I’m glad it’s yours now Will.” She said taking his hand.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Cristina currently lives in Massachusetts. As a Navy “brat” she spent her childhood moving around until 8th grade when her father retired and they settled down in Owls Head, located in the Midcoast area of Maine where her father grew up. Though technically still considered “from away” by some Mainers, Cristina’s love of the area and its history is the inspiration for this book.
